Hopefully they do the uglier cheapo Amazon exclusive "frustration free packaging" version like they did with the Mandalorian rifle and sell them separately
Nerf and Star Trek is a cool crossover, but I agree on the issues- why is the phaser rifle borg-assimilated, and why is the hand phaser so low-performance (and not sold on its own, because then I would totally get it)? If this was made specifically as an homage to ST First Contact I'd get the borg element, but... oh yeah and the price. No thanks.
You said it! Even with its weak firing, the little one looks similar enough to a ST:TNG phaser that I'd be tempted to get a couple as stocking stuffers for the Trekkers I know. I might look around on eBay for it sometime next year in case people start selling theirs, but I won't be in any hurry.
No weapon of the federation would have "Star Trek" written on the side. Color of plastic is wrong. And "Borg Enhancements" are more complex while being somewhat subtle. Sound board seems decent but thats about it when you have college grads and not actual fans design things for actual fans. Personally they should have gone OST with kirk era weapons like that big blue rifle shown more than once on screen time and the phaser was just black. Archers easy design as well and the shells would have more accomdating.
"they should have gone OST with kirk era weapons" -- yes! If they can crank out a bajillion Fortnite-themed blasters, you'd think that they could do TOS and TNG phasers, and maybe a Klingon or Vulcan hand weapon too?
They should’ve made them in TR-116s. TR-116s are close to traditional guns made by the Federation. In “Deep Space 9”, one is modified with a micro-transporter than can shoot through walls.
Honestly, most of the Star Trek cosplayers I know aren’t really into phasers. They like the combadges and the communicators and the tricorders. Actually if Hasbro were smart they should have gone into Klingon designs for blasters.
The pistol phasers are ones I've seen a lot of people go for. I'm not into the costuming side, but I have one of the old lights and sounds ones from when TNG was out and a few people keep wanting to borrow it for things. They sell for a decent price. Unfortunately, along with the rifles Borg deco, the phasers are the wrong color for the shows. They were more of a grey and black
I mean, its a nerf gun thats celebrating First Contact, my favourite movie. I instantly preordered. That said, I don't love the aesthetic of either, they could have done a 1:1 Phaser replica and not run afoul of it looking like a gun.
“Really good lighting for videos”?? Maybe if the camera was on a tripod with a fixed exposure setting. The cameraperson struggling with the exposure does not make for a good time trying to look at mostly white blasters against a white background.
As a Star Trek fan, this is a solid no for me. All I can think of is how much work I would have to put into it to de-kiddyfy this. If it was just painting, ok, but the putty and sanding to remove the Borg crap… that is if I understand right and all that clear green crap is textured.
Lets face it, no kid is going to spend that much money on a star trek blaster cus most kids dont know what star trek is. And most adult collectors aren't spending that much on a toy that doesn't have much value, its gonna end up in thrift stores for years.
Having bought the LMTD Lightning Bolt? (Shellstrike) blaster ($50 for a cool $13 blaster + 2 MTG cards *sigh*) - Nerf really does need to start including a stand for these "premium" blasters, even if it's just made of cardboard. The boxes are...okay, but that's not really how people display their blasters.
Yeah, Nerf LMTD is an absolute joke at this point. Why bother preodering a blaster when it can be bought after the release date. And the Mandalorian rifle is definitely an extreme case, but still. And very few of the blasters have good functionality at this point either, the Aliens Pulse Rifle being the exception
Not happy with the rifle, and after modifying the phaser pistol, and painting it, you could get aesthetic jolt performances... If you are going to do Star Trek, do regular federation, borg line, romulan line, klingon line, etc... NERF loves oddball side runs, like the dino line, and the zombies... If they got better at these things, I would see myself getting into them. But it is a hard pass for now, especially since they are so spendy. Keep up the great work, lolz that outro
Tbh I still wish this was a genuine Type 3 TNG version rifle (without the Borg influence) just to make it unique in appearance. This First Contact version always looked way too 'generic sci-fi blaster' to me and not very Star Trek. That said this does look pretty cool for what it is and I really do like that box art too. I just cant abide with that PRICE! For years these toy companies have been raping us with these ridiculous prices and it has to stop. If I were to see this in the stores for a marked down price, its mine. Otherwise I may just pass this time.
@@DaveBanner-l7y -- I haven't tried any of the drums on it yet, but I figured out how to make a 12-dart magazine fit (have to carve down some bits so it'll go into the well). Won't work with the 18, though.
It doesn't really make sense for a Borg to assimilate a phaser. They have built-in prosthetics & on-board tech, to do the job. It would be a pretty slow process to hack a weapon, with wires & hoses. I don't think they would need green lights, for a former Starfleet drone to override any biometric security interlocks. I guess, it makes sense to bundle the hand phaser. It looks a bit too cheap, to expect people to buy it on its own. They'd probably charge a lot for it. They probably decided that it would make more sense to use it as an excuse to raise the price of the entire package. The First Contact phaser rifle just isn't the same, since they... Nerfed it. 😃 😎
Etsy does have better star trek props and stuff but that's just it... there props. They don't light up, they don't make any sounds nothing, and the ones that do are so absurdly overpriced it's not even worth it.
Nerf should focus on making good blasters for blaster battles. Not flimsy sci-fi crap. You can get a 2$ keyhanger with sci-fi sounds bet that instead if you want laser sounds.
tbf i am disappointed that nerf made this into a nerf blaster, when it couldve fit WAY better into the laser ops pro line, and also, the phaser rifle SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN given the assimilated look...ugh... god dammit, hasbro...waste of money. if they wanted to give it a assimilated look and get away with it they couldve made it into the I-mod from Star Trek Elite force.
Those don't sound like any Star Trek sound effects I recall ever hearing. Are they from one of the new P+ series? Almost sound like knockoff Star Wars blaster sounds. Almost. Everyone feel free to correct me in the comments! It's great for the algorithm. Thanks for the review, Drac!
Yeah this is a just a damn cash grab. I’m a Star Trek nerd first and foremost but this is nothing but a cash grab for Hasbro. The sounds aren’t even Trek in the slightest. Hasbro OWNS what Playmates used to be and Playmates had the licenses to make authentic sounding toys. The LEAST Hasbro could’ve done was use those sounds from the old toys that actually sound like the shows and movies. I hate the assimilated look on the phaser rifle. Okay sure, the phaser rifle could be mistaken for a real weapon. Then mold it in light blue and orange!! There is so much I hate about the way this was done. For $120, yeah Drac is right. I’m going to Etsy to get someone’s 3D printed model and I’m gonna gut it and put a stryfe or FDL internals or a rival hera inside.
