The Neuroscience Of Awakening: Your Brain On Buddhism

Our brains have the amazing ability to change themselves.
This is called neuroplasticity.
Our brains are not fixed structures.
Rather, they are dynamic systems that are constantly changing and
evolving in response to the environment.
In fact, research done in the last decade has shown that the brain is much
more malleable and responsive to change than previously thought.
Neuroplasticity can occur at different levels of the brain, from the level of
individual neurons to the level of entire brain regions.
One of the primary features of neuroplasticity is that it is
activity-dependent.
This means that the changes in the brain are driven by experiences and
activities.
For example, if a person engages in a particular activity repeatedly, such as
learning to play a musical instrument or practising a new language, the
the brain will adapt to these experiences and develop new neural connections
that support these activities.
Neuroplasticity also has important implications for understanding the
relationship between the mind and the brain.
If the brain can change and adapt in response to
experiences, this means that our minds also can change
and adapt.
But what do we mean when we say “mind”?
What is a mind?
The mind is nothing but thoughts.
There is no mind without thoughts.
Therefore, because of the neuroplasticity of brains, we can radically change
our thought patterns, or our minds.
We can change our thought patterns to have happier or more beneficial
minds.
But even more than this.
We can also develop the capacity to slow or even stop thought completely
by the activity of focusing attention on the emptiness or empty silence
between thoughts.
Many religious and mystical traditions, including many schools of
Buddhism, teach that it is this capacity to rest in the emptiness between
thought that ultimately reveals the very nature of reality, and the reality of
who we truly are.

I love being a Buddhist. My meditation practice, my Buddha statue, my incense and following the eightfold path are the most important things in my life. Buddhism is when science and empirical facts meet wisdom and spirituality. All the supernatural and magic and mystery mean nothing to me. Buddhism is for me proven truth and refinement of the mind, thoughts and one's own behavior

Reality = That which is/That I am = Being aware of being aware. Freedom is a Way of Being. Being aware of being aware is unmodulated by the 5 senses, thus unfettered, which is the resonant inner state frequency closest in alignment with the frequency of the all-inclusive Absolute, where all things are possible (Wisdom and Understanding). What appears as separate and opposite, is in Reality - Continuum.

Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhism developed more than 600 years and 1000 years respectively after Buddha. so they contain a lot of teachings which deviate from the original teaching of Buddha. Sad to see later practices deteriorate into superstition and chanting unoriginal suttas and mantras like a parrot. This greatly deviate from the cultivation of virtue, deep meditation and insight wisdom found in the original teachings. Cheers.

As a Christian, I always grew up with a sort of exaggerated description of what Buddhists believe. I developed a love for Japan, and along with it, Zen Buddhism, which I've studied on and off but only recently read Alan Watts's 'Way of Zen' - again, being Christian, there are takeaways from Buddhism I'll disagree with at the end of the day, but I deeply admire Buddhism and Zen for their unique philosophies and interest in brain science and the nature of space-time, which don't have to arbitrarily conflict with other religious beliefs. Certain insights on the nature of past-present-future from 'The Way of Zen' left me positively electrified, like the closest I've ever come to grasping Buddhism's heart (yet I suppose even the 'grasping' itself isn't the way to Satori?).
@fortissimoX
@fortissimoX Год назад
Yes, you are right, "grasping" is not the way to Satori. The reason why it isn't is because Satori can't be any kind of mental concept. So, in the best case, that what you "grasp" can only be a very good pointer to the real truth. But ultimately, you must realize the truth for yourself by some kind of practice.

Having no internal voice doesn’t mean no thoughts at all. Using words is just one way of thinking, people with no internal voice do not think in words, but in images/sensations or abstractions. The difference between a person that managed to calm his mind is that his brain wastes less energy on unnecessary ruminating and thinking. Many people spend a lot of time being in the mind rather in the present moment or in their bodies

Im concerned of how close is the mind of some people, it doesnt matter if you say your Buddhist, mystic , yogi , zen master , christian , philosopher , as long as you seek truth without any attachments OR BELIEFS like religions, and manage to have near death experiences (like mystics did) then you can learn and have an experience of what reality is, embrace truth, not beliefs
@reme7903
@reme7903 10 месяцев назад
All this is useful and brings up important connections between science and spirituality. However I feel it's important to bring up that the point of meditation is not to merely improve ourselves or practicing just because it useful or good for you. The point of it is meditation itself. As soon as you meditate for an alterior motive it's no longer really meditation. It has countless benefits for material existence but it's ultimately a way of being where you and the universe (nature, god, the source) are singular

I’ve experienced both mental states. I remember as a young child (maybe 5?) I watched an episode of The Wonder Years, a show in which an adult narrator looks back on his childhood and does voiceover to reflect the child’s thoughts. I remember thinking, “That’s not how my mind works, I don’t have a voice articulating everything. I just feel.” (Of course, I’m using words to explain the experience in hindsight, but you get the gist) The voice came online later in childhood and didn’t shut up for 25 years. After a few years of meditation, the voice is much quieter now and I often enter mental states in which it goes away completely. But yes, we are often our own worst company in our heads.

Idk about “Buddhist” meditation. I think just meditation? As someone who would better be associated with Christian Mysticism, I must say that I learned to meditate from Buddhist teachings but all of that ended up pointing me to my Master. Just throwing that out there for anyone who may feel a little stuck or lost when it comes to the different descriptors of mystical practices. All of it serves the One maybe?
@Chase_Istre
@Chase_Istre Год назад
If I let go of body and mind no matter from which view, I come unto the one underlying spirit. “Crucifying one’s body with its passions and desires, one belongs to Christ. Since we walk in spirit, let us lead in spirit”. Or we can say “Letting go of empty phenomenon, we come unto the Absolute Buddha nature. Let us walk in it’s perfection.” Or we can say “Letting go of maya (illusion) we awaken to the supreme atman. Let us walk thus in accordance with Brahman, the eternal being.” These descriptions are all valid from Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu views yet we can see they point to the one. It is as if I point my finger to the moon, and two other people also point to the moon. It isn’t the finger that is the moon itself but the moon that fingers are pointing to. This is how we should contemplate. There is no Buddhist or Christian meditation, both are fingers pointing us to the moon. Can the moon be one finger or the other alone?

"In the deep, dreamless sleep, we touch the source of existence itself. It is a state of profound stillness and peace, where the mind rests and the heart expands in boundless awareness. In that sacred realm, we glimpse the infinite depths of our being, beyond all names and forms, and merge with the timeless essence of the universe." - Ramana Maharshi, Talks With Ramana Maharshi

In Buddhism Devatas or Gods, Heaven and hell, different realms Karma, reincarnation everything exist even if you pray Gods and goddesses they will help you to achieve enlightenment but mein goal is not to achieve god or go to heaven but go beyond everything even concept of God and that is Nirvana. Rig Veda also mentioned that god almighty came after the creation so Buddhism is very diverse tradition or philosophy where is lots of spiritual concept.

Men have to go through a lot of training to achieve emotions like empathy, women are born with it.

Young boys definitely can feel empathy to others, it’s just that over time due to unfortunate situations they repress their empathy to deal with life. So it’s not that males are born without empathy
