My grandfather was Danish, my dad Swedish, my mom German. I lived in 6 European countries before moving to the United States back in 1986, first to Florida, then, in 1991 to California. Back then the USA was the best country on Earth. Big cars, cheap gas, freedom. No SSN needed to participate in daily life. Since then, it all has gone downhill steadily, and the past few years this country has really declined. The government doesn't work for us anymore; they just line their own pockets and micro-manage every aspect of our lives. Cost of living is through the roof! This country has been good to me, and I had a good run, own a beautiful home in one of the nicest retirement areas of California, have a solid retirement fund, and all the toys I ever wanted. Had you told me a few years ago that I'd be leaving the US, even remotely suggested Mexico, I would have laughed you out of the door. Mexico, a poverty struck country with drug cartels and mass murders on a daily basis! Well, so I thought, until the wife and I vacationed in SMA and found out that everything the US media told us about Mexico is wrong, total BS actually! After our first visit, where we found out that Mexico is safe, affordable, has perfect weather year round, a beautiful landscape, super healthy food, and the nicest people, we knew that this was something to look into. And so we did. I'm 66 now, almost 67, my wife just turned 62. We got our Residente Temporal visas and will be doing Canje in a month or two. Then we'll sell our business, our home, and once the money is in the bank, we'll be loading our 2 dogs and some stuff into our Honda Odyssey or Toyota 4Runner that we'll buy specifically for year 1 and drive down to Mexico. We'll explore the country for close to a year to be sure it's for us, long term, and what part of Mexico works best for us, anything from Lago de Chapala to Oxaca. Improving our Spanish skills on a daily basis will be our "job." Thanks to SS and our solid nest egg, we'll be able to live comfortably in Mexico, buy a house outright eventually, and travel 1 or 2 months to other countries every year. After having lived in Europe for 30+ year, in the US for another 30+ years, I'm so ready to experience Mexico for the rest of my life! The American Dream isn't dead; it has moved south to Mexico!

José. You are absolutely right in most of the issues that you are mentioning in this video. Democracy is dying in the USA. We are loosing a lot of our rights. One of the most important is our freedom of speech. They tell us that we have the right to choose our government, but is not truth, you feel persuaded when you openly express your choices. I am an American citizen, but I'm also Mexican citizen, and lately, I have been contemplating about the possibility of going back to Mexico.

Jose thank you so much! After a couple months of considering moving to Mexico, me and my wife and our daughter are shooting to move there next June. The only issue about our plan is now where to get a tourist visa for temporary residency until we are eligible enough to get permanent residency.

No its not. The dream is to move to a gingo enclave and transplant as much of American culture as possible. I've lived in Mexico for 12 years and traveled all over the country since the late '70's. Most American live in well known expat communities, they don't speak the language and make no attempts to integrate into the local culture, learn the customs, etc. Let's be real. They want a cheaper version of America.

Absolutely crazy!! Housing prices in metro Mexico are skyrocketing!! Mexican banking has interest rates that are similar to gangster loan sharks from a Sopranos episode!! There are millions of inexpensive homes in the United States.. many communities almost giving homes away!! The difference in US is infrastructure..if you move to a small town in rust belt or rural areas.. housing is cheap, but nothing there.. many communities in the US are without a grocery store..no doctors..no services.. but dirt cheap housing..in Pennsylvania and Michigan, Indiana and Iowa to start.. houses for @$15,000-20,000 or less.. West Virginia..less than 20k.. but again run down community and getting smaller not bigger.. Mexico has opportunities to live in smaller places w like minded people who are not in a village because of blind ambition..go to Tijuana, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, other large Mexican cities you will be run over just like LA, Phoenix, Dallas, Salt Lake, Nashville.. cities in Mexico are expensive and busy and growing and buzzing w activity.. make sure you spend a few thousand dollars and your time to do in person homework about Mexico and where you are thinking of moving and why. The Mexican stereotype of laid back, sombrero, burro riding dusty, sleeping Mexico are almost gone.. don't get fooled into thinking that Mexico is not ultra ultra ambitious!! Millions of Mexicans and all government want Mexico to progress to be modern.. so you want laid back, cheap and they want thousands of new jobs, new opportunities, new housing, new, new, new! What you said and we saw in the video proves that the American dream has relocated. Crafts are sold by happy artists who don’t have a piece of the stock market. But also, they aren’t worried to pay rent a mortgage or make a car payment. Amazon makes more money than all of Mexico combined. The biggest and most successful corporations in the world are in the USA, sadly doing what they want. Black Rock or Black Stone some one argues are the political choices. Both fund/control politics and “good meaning Americans get to contribute to their political party of choice”. The USA is the best place to live if stuff is your way of life because there are great American corporations fabricating and bringing dirt cheap stuff to the USA, all in the name of helping poor nations with “low wages” so they don’t starve to death while natural resources are also taken and “corrupt leaders” most placed by the USA agencies allow it. The bad thing is that corporations got so greedy that now control “the most powerful nations of the world”. The hard working people that drive a brand new car and live in a brand new house work so hard to keep up with the Jone’s. Stressed and unhappy lives because they are slaved to the system. Politicians who know the truth don’t say it, instead lie and blame “immigrants and nations”, the same immigrants that in other generations made America great. Nations aren’t participating in the control of the dollar so BRICS nations are forming and the Petro dollar is losing power. When have you heard politicians talk about these things? Instead blame China, Russia, Iran, Mexico etc. Mexicans love being Mexicans and left in the past for lack of opportunities but if you work in Mexico just like in the USA, money is taken from your paycheck. In Mexico after so many years you have a credit to buy or build a house, as long as you work you don’t have a “big mortgage/stress”. Workers and companies pay a percentage out of every paycheck so you can have access to healthcare etc. Mexicans aren’t seeking to impress anyone so they ride the bus, walk, ride a bike and live a happy lifestyle. The American dream departed from the wrong premise, America is the continent. Mexico is geographically one of the best places in the world due to ecosystems. Access to seasonal fruits, arts, good weather etc. If your thing is stuff, no place like the USA. I don’t see corporations sharing more of what they already do in the USA so if you are looking to live life to the fullest, I think you can be happy in Mexico. A “socialist nation” labeled by the G7. They got power and strength but we just want to be free and have fun. Welcome to Mexico to all we’ll meaning people, a nation rich and vast that will have its first female president. We would not allow politicians lying as a way of life. Mexico has the American dream because we are living the era of corrupt politicians. If a problem is well studied, it’s a problem half solved. But if the problem isn’t spoken about, I only think more frustration comes your way.

We are in the early stages of planning our move. Hubby is 4 years from retirement. I am even younger so We need to find some sort of online gig. I hope politics doesn't keep us from living our best life.😢

Keep in mind the cost of living continues to rise here in Mexico. Really the only things noticeably cheaper are rents / real estate, basic grocery items, and labor. But note that wrt food, it’s only cheaper if you go to the less hygienic markets and buy the lower quality meats and such (shop like a lower income Mexican). Walmart / Costco / Soriana - type stores are just as expensive as the US, and many items are more expensive. Electronics and appliances are at least 50-60% more expensive across the board. Labor is cheap (usually) but you get what you pay for. Auto mechanics take forever unless you go to the pro shops and pay almost as much as you would in the states. The electrician doesn’t show up and doesn’t answer when you call. You take time off to meet them and you get stood up. Dentists may not get it right the first time, and you have to come back two or three times to get your filling or your bridge finally done right or fitted correctly. It’s always something like that. Just endless annoyances with lack of competency, unprofessional behavior, slow, shoddy work, that sort of thing. It’s just part of the culture here and Mexicans all learn to live with it. You have to carefully find that one good dentist, that one reliable mechanic, that one good electrician, that one good plumber, and so on. You find a good one and you hang onto them, because timeliness and competency are NOT something you can take for granted. And many items are just illogically expensive. Why does a $150 kids bike cost $500+ in Mexico, no matter where you buy it? They can’t manufacture bicycles here? Huh? Lots of random things are just inexplicably costly. So it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, and overall not as cheap as the RU-vidrs claim.

what i have discovered is that people leave the USA with the hopes and expectations that all is peaches and 100% comfort.. all is well until they get here and complains and discomforts become the greater issue..come and see , experience Mexico with out any expectations and be part of the people and the culture. Comfort to most becomes a priority forgetting cuality of life.. I hope people see what Jose is saying between the lines..

The American dream was always for white people in the 1950s-mid 1970s and before…now that cooperations are squeezing everyone it has become harder. African Americans, Native Americans and other brown people never really got to live the American dream.

But you have to specify that it's a dream for a retired person, with a stable pension in dollars. People will not move down to Mexico to get paid those low wages, that's why lots of Mexicans still moving to the USA for the much better wages.

Really depends where you are going to make your money. If you are going to be a retiree or a RU-vidr, that will work for a while, but Mexico is updating their visa authorizations due to all the effects from both on housing prices and escalation in cost of living in Mexico, especially CDMX.

THE AMERICAS are NOT JUST THE USA, consists of all countries from Canada down to Chile and everything in between SO MANY other BETTER OPTIONS than the US, you just have to stop fearing the new and go out and explore the world When you do that you will find people everywhere are VERY NICE and friendly and you might figure out that healthcare in these other places is FREE or costs nothing but some spare change ! I pay $6 to see an MD in a clinic And FOOD ! My God, outside the US it's so cheap Open up your mind that there might be a ton of places you never thought of going to that are SURPRISINGLY NICE and INEXPENSIVE TOO ! You will end up saying to yourself - DAMN , these people are wonderful and it's NICE here ! It brings a smile to your face ! I would have never believed it till I did it !

Every time I think about moving to Mexico I see videos of locals saying they don’t want Americans in there town. They say inflation etc etc. all I want is to be left alone. If I were to buy a few aches in Mexico do you think I will get problems from the locals to the point I wouldn’t want to be there? I mind my own business and would help anyone who wants it. Would that set me up to get got by someone?

And perhaps that each new generation is more prosperous than the last. Rarely is freedom mentioned, or if mentioned, it is defined in vague, weak ways, say as a choice of menu items. This outlook predates by decades the Washington turmoil of the past 8 years everyone complains about, yet which has zero impact on the daily life of ordinary citizens. Jose, what jumpstarted the emigration bandwagon out of the US was housing, particularly the pandemic explosion in rent costs starting 2020 and the ongoing nationwide 5-million unit shortage of purchasable houses. Hard to overstate the panic that set in. On the other hand, many don’t make the effort to take advantage of better housing costs in the interior plains and mountain states. They’d rather complain about elections than leave the rim states for the interior or for Mexico and beyond. The challenge in emigration is to anticipate instabilities not only in the home country, but in the destination country. A lot of Americans once delighted by Ecuador, for example, have felt driven to leave that country in recent months … for the US. It’s a magnet in the same way that hostage takers are for sufferers of Stockholm Syndrome. Wide swaths of the US population are under tremendous pressure, and therefore merit encouragement, yet many retain risk averseness to an extent that is hard to empathize with.
