Got my Ulanzi one week ago, it's really good for daily use. But still several issues for improvement, like the bag is not big enough if you attach quick release holder on the tripod. Also, I saw some case that the screw driver will fail. Other than that, this tripod is as good as the PD one.

Awesome video. I was waiting on buying the peak design and I’m glad there’s a better version of it cus the hindrances of the pd were annoying during use. Would you mind doing a video on how much weight the tripod head can handle before it sags and/or a video about sturdiness. I think dp review did one a while back and it was pretty cool to see how diff tripods handle vibrations etc.

Your videos are very informative and I surely get to learn a few things from you. We recently went camping and I was carrying my old heavy tripod. It does the job but I started looking for something smaller and lighter. This review could not have come at a better time. Ulanzi Coman looks like something I would buy. Now I hope they ship to Australia soon.

I did a lot of research on PDTT, Ulanzi,...one day I found a Chinese brand called Leofoto, and I already own LY-224C. There are certainly many differences between these pins but the ultimate purpose for travel photography remains the same. Lighter, sturdier, easier to maintain, versatile for more photography purposes, popular ARCA SWIFF mount, so much more for $200.

I managed to get the Ulanzi tripod through the camera conspiracies yt channel for $299! I couldn’t believe it. It’s currently en route to me now from China. I ordered it directly from Ulanzi. I need a good solid travel tripod for the style of shooting I do, and the Ulanzi was a no brainer when I compared the two. The fact that it was actual panning built in is the reason why it was the superior choice in my opinion. I shoot video more than anything, and I need that functionality. I like to shoot documentaries, interviews, abandoned places, seedy places, and more. I love the idea of bringing reality to the eyes of viewers, but I like to do that in a cinematic way. There is such a massive underbelly of the world that no one sees, and I want to be in it, documenting it through videography and photography.

5:06 If you use a square Arca plate like those from Peak/Ulanzi/Pgytech most likely you will not be blocking the spirit level bubble since you can mount the camera 90° from how it is shown in the video

Is the Ulanzi compatible with the Peak design quick release (smaller) plate?

@@nathanpinnock9541 the tripod is has a knob to tighten the plate so it is compatible with PD or other Arca plates. There is newer version of the Ulanzi tripod that is only compatible with its own F38 quick release plate, do not get that version if you have other Arca accessories.

Hey Tymur! It should fit :) I recommend getting the base plate and the QR so it’s a little bit more elevated but the F38 should be compatible with it since the arca Swiss and peak design are both compatible!

Very good video, thank you! I own the PD tripod since it came out, got it a little bit cheaper in the original kickstarter or whatever. The PD bag has a zipper. Yes, it is tight, but the more often you put the tripod in and get it out, it loosens a bit and has just the perfect size. No idea why they changed it, if they did.

I just got my Ulanzi & Coman tripod today and I find the joints and levers too tight to adjust, I wonder if I could lubricate it. It’s kinda hard to adjust. I wonder if the Peak Design has smoother joints. I think this is the major flaw for the Ulanzi.

No issues on customer support for me and a few of my friends :) Shipping takes about 5-7 business days to get to Toronto! Depends if they have stock in their US warehouse sometimes its super fast.

They are releasing a universal tripod head mount so you can attach any small fluid head :) that should give you good pan and tilts.

Depends really on your case use! If you’re not gonna leave your camera on the monopod for a bit, the monopod makes sense. General tripod use would easily be the ulanzi one!

For actual video work, I’d rather invest in the heavy duty ones with good fluid heads! It’ll be future proofing as well as your camera gets bigger when the production gets bigger! This one is good if you travel a lot and don’t want to carry super big ones

Hi, Victor, are you owning both PD tripod and this Ulanzi? I am using PD tripod Alu version for travel. Yes, I think it’s quite heavy. But most of the time, I did a lot of long exposure shots, mostly, 3-8 mins. The Alu PD tripod can hold my Z6ii with 70-200Z without any problem, yes, I do carry big heavy lenses. Even when I faced light to moderate wind, no need to hang my backpack. I am making decision of getting the is Ulanzi, but, by looking at the size of the legs and the smallest extension. I really wonder, if it really could hold the longer lens steady? Please kindly advise, this could cut me about 0.5Kg. Thanks

I haven't gone out and test it out with light / moderate winds yet but when I get a chance I will let you know! I've used it for video with the Sony A7IV + DZOfilm 35mm T2.1 with no winds fully extended, the setup stays put no problem! Not quite long as the 70-200 but it is front heavy. I didn't see any drag on the front during the recording.

Yes but I wouldn’t suggest it. The 1/4 is the only point of contact and it’s gonna gonna be enough to have a stable tripod head

I haven't seen the Ulanzi, but I have examined the Peak Desig closely. It has a different structure, useful and robust appearance. However, it is only suitable for light and small equipment. The structure of the plate is not suitable for many equipment. Nature and bird photography does not seem possible with this tripod. For the same purpose Most quality tripods produced cost $100-150. In my opinion, $649.95 is too much for a Peak Design Tripod.

I have ordered the tripod, checked the order tracking and written to the company, but no responds or update emails. I am leaving for Africa in one week and need to know when I can expect the tripod. My fault not to write them to get an estimated turnaround and that is why am sharing this here. I encourage the company to offer alternative shipping for those of us that need to know when we can expect delivery. Sorry to not be able to receive this tripod for my upcoming Africa Adventure, but I am sure it will be good on future adventures.

Just me sharing my thoughts here: While both are great and Ulanzi's version offers better design features here and there, let's not forget that their job consisted of copying(which is totally fine) Peak Design's version and improving upon it. While Peak Design of course copied the tripod principle from others, yet went through the full R&D process before they came up with the current version of their Travel Tripod... These two engineering processes are vastly different from one another and so are the costs involved. Also, the Peak Design version has gone through a few (al though it being minor) improvements: new zipper type bag + I believe but don't hold me to it, center stem being made out of aluminum on carbon version to extend its lifetime. Is the Peak Design version overpriced? I don't know. I don't know where and how Peak Design and Ulanzi source their materials. I don't know anything about their company structures with regard to employee salaries and I certainly don't know much about their company missions. What I do know now is that Peak Design sparked a new type of tripod which in my eyes is revolutionary and I love the fact that other manufacturers have FINALLY decided to jump on that fresh new train. The alloy one isn’t bad but it is a heavier setup. Ulanzi also makes their version of the capture. I’ve tested and is as good in terms of convenience. (If you do look into it it’s the F38 not the claw clip)

@@tannerjagim4241 yes, I’ve had em both and no issues. I’ll recommend trying it out and testing it as hard as you can with mounting something else on it, it’s secure enough. If it does break their support team is very active to help you. If you’re unsure, just go with the popular choice! Either way both are great options.

I find em similar. The rig is a bit heavy so you’d have to weigh down the tripod. I’d only use both on stripped down cameras and lenses only and make sure it’s balanced if using a telephoto lens

Ulanzi has ripped off Peak Design a lot, and from my experience, the products are always far lower quality. Maybe this one will be different, but I doubt it. The QR on the extension and ARCA mount knob look cheap IMO. I do hope PD comes out with a v2 that works on the vert issue you mentioned, but it hasn't been a big issue for me, and regardless, I'd rather pay more for better quality and to support the true designers.

This may be a contributor to Peak Design’s cost. Would getting spare parts in/out of warranty be just as easy? I know PD offers free replacement parts for broken pieces when/if they break. Would love to hear about comparisons between the two some time down the line. Thanks for the response!

@@Jacob8890 I'll have to check with them :) So far the peak design one has held up pretty good. It's pretty banged up due to travels and it's going strong. I feel its similar to the Ulanzi one long term as well but only time will tell! Maybe I'll do a long term review!

Not only does Peak Design offer a lifetime warranty (which I've experienced first hand), but also they have to cover the actual research and development of a completely innovative design. It is by supporting this kind of companies that we can fuel new research and development to be done, and new awesome products to come to life. Supporting companies like Ulanzi does the complete opposite: it sends the message "why innovate when we can just copy?".

Lifetime warranty is great indeed but unfortunately, that’s how the world works. You’ve seen a bunch of companies copy products that are successful for the fraction of the price. That is true to every single industry. You have phone companies trying to copy the iPhone for the longest time. They came out with the Apple Pay and next thing you know google pay is a thing. If you want to support the original company, I don’t have an issue with that it makes perfect sense but can you really stop people buying products cheaper and improved for a fraction of the price? There are pros and cons to everything. It’s a capitalistic world, everything revolves around profit no matter where you look at it.

But Ulanzi is innovating on Peak Design's design though. All those improvements over PD required R&D, prototyping, machining etc. Not a simple feat. PD has charged exorbitant prices for the longest time due to their monopoly in the ultra compact tripod market. Now that some real competition is up, I think they will start using the spare cash collected over the years of PD tax to design a new tripod. And if you look at Ulanzi's other products, they are really really smart at coming up with new ecosystems such as the Falcam. It's not a simple copycat company. Copycats would be like K&F and their version of the PD tripod which looks almost similar but with a conventional ballhead.

Still waiting on my F38. Been waiting for competition to the PD. That tripod was trash for the price point. Ended up returning it the 3 day I got it. 😂. Hopefully the F38 can with stand my travels in the coming year. 🤞🏽

I never feel confident on copycat especially on carbon fiber since not alla carbon fiber are the same. Also carbon fiber just breaks it doesn't bend before.

Actually there is not much difference in price, Peak Design is only slightly more. Not sure why Ulanzi has opted to compete with a PD knock off that is just as expensive. Peak Design is £349 and Ulanzi Zero Y is £328 TBH I would opt for the Peak Design due to the quality of their products. If Ulanzi was around £100 cheaper, then yes a no brainer I would love to know where you all are seeing the Ulanzi version far cheaper. Even on AliExpress right now it’s still at £328

Well not really. Peak design Aluminum is almost the same price as the ulanzi. Ulanzi is carbon fiber and lighter and it competes with the peak design carbon fiber model. You do know that peak design is manufactured in China too right? Like most products nowadays.

You forgot one thing... warranty. PD has a lifetime warranty. Ulanzi does not. If you get a broken Ulanzi, you have to buy another which costs as much as 1 PD CF tripod.

@@alexandervideo3804 It is not a matter of taste, but of facts: 1, With a twist lock, you can never be sure that the legs are locked tight enough for a heavier machine. 2, You can lock the legs together much more laxly with a collapse, 3x with your palm to push the buckles away with a flip lock, while with a twist lock you can use your fingers 12x with more time... And also see point 1 back. That's all!

Oh NO ! Another tripod with a center column, a center column makes the tripod a lot more unstable, so get a tripod without a center column, I use the very versatile Novoflex tripod system.

Ulanzi is not true arca swiss. These ulanzi plates can go to other heads, but other plates cannot go on this head, even when the little screws are removed. My experiences have told me only go to real arca swiss. They meant professional design and makes life much easier. I have a couple of none arca swiss tripods laying around and plates are missing. I'm willing to pay a few hundred more for true arca swiss. Very disappointed to find it only after getting it from listening to all these reviews that claims it it is acra swiss "compatible".

A couple of points.. 1. That’s not how the PD bag looks (anymore)! Ulanzi copied the current PD bag. 2. The Ulanzi ball head can only carry 5 kg. The PD tripod ball head is good for double at 10 kg. That is VERY important with bigger lenses or long exposure photography. 3. The center extension on the Ulanzi is much less stabil than the one on PD tripod. 4. The most important one: the PD tripod is covered by their LIFETIME WARRANTY!!!

That’s more than a couple ;) but yes, agreed. Although I have yet to find someone use a travel tripod that uses a heavy camera setup. 1dx with a 200-400mm lens? Those kind of people would be buying big heavy tripods for their work. Lifetime warranty with PD is a good one.

@@VictorLaforteza Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K with DZOFilm Pictor 50-125mm T2.8 lens, rails, battery, timecode, mic, and follow focus… you’re already at 90% capacity of the Ulanzi. You want to be as far below max capacity as possible for stability sake.. it is not only how much can it carry, but also how much can you be below max capacity with your standard gear! You don’t want to go right up to point of failure.. the PD tripod gives me a much bigger safety margin and much better stability as a result, because it’s built to support much more.
