I was always told to never book the rooms at either end (1 and 10) on VIA Rail Canada's Renaissance equipment because they are right over the wheels and are therefore noisy. Clearly the same holds true for these cars, which, incidentally, have a very similar layout, with 1 through 6 having showers and 7 through 10 having a bathroom but no shower. I think on this train I would only go for room 7 or 8 assuming I went with a "classic". I always chose 4 or 5 on the VIA Rail trains and they were pretty well silent - the rooms with showers don't cost any extra on VIA and I'm guessing it's because they aren't so great just like these - but at least they usually have hot water. On a side note, the older VIA equipment has no issues re showers. The showers are pretty well always good.

I was surprised that such a new train would be so noisy. Still, likely it is something that will be addressed quickly. Overall, that looks like a wonderful service, easily the equal or superior (as far as comfort and amenities) of my own Amtrak. And I wholeheartedly agree about the underestimation of the night train market in the UK and throughout Europe. There was a time not so long ago when analysts were saying that the days of the sleeper train were done thanks to high speed rail and cheap airlines, but that's simply not true and never was. I too hope that services like this expand once more; I could easily see a demand for, say, a London to Holyhead sleeper to meet the morning ferries crossing to Ireland (they've even got the name ready: The Irish Mail, revived from the old London & North Western Railway). And if these new Mk.5 coaches prove themselves, how about sleeper services through the Channel Tunnel, overnight runs to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, even as far afield as Berlin, Venice, and Vienna. A sort of modern revival of the Orient Express. Granted, that might be a little trickier politically now that Brexit is sadly a thing...
@TheAminoamigo

It's true that in today's environmentally aware world, sleeper trains could re-emerge as a viable option but at least in Britain there is one big barrier to this: price. Sleeper trains in the UK are more like a premium product, the reserve of the middle class. Sadly the biggest factor in a customer's decision for what form of transport to take is price and not carbon emissions. Perhaps there is a gap in the market however!
@alexmcwhirter6611

But there were Nightstar trains planned for when the Channel Tunnel opened ... but they never happened. Rolling stock (unused) was sold to Canads at a discounted price. No plans for another Nightstar.
@TheAminoamigo
@TheAminoamigo 4 года назад
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Interesting, but would sleeper trains have really made sense on a highspeed rail line? Eurostar trains set off as early as 5:40 in the morning. How would you schedule sleeper trains without holding up all the morning eurostar trains?
@alexmcwhirter6611
@alexmcwhirter6611 4 года назад
@@TheAminoamigo The planned Nightstar trains (check with Wiki for the details) were intended to operate from the UK regions and not just from London. The rolling stock would have been hauled by diesel locos (over non-electrified lines) to the Channel Tunnel where there would be a change to electric power.
@johaquila
@johaquila 3 года назад
I guess you could have boarded a Channel Tunnel overnight train in Manchester or Leeds in the early evening or in London late at night and left it in the very early morning in Brussels or Paris or around 10-ish in Strasbourg, Frankfurt or Berlin. That would make a lot of sense. What doesn't make sense is buying a ticket from the north of England to London plus a separate Eurostar ticket and gambling that you will make the connection (or paying a fortune for a hotel room if you want to have good buffer).

Another great video Thibault. 👍 The rattling you heard seems to be an common issue with all the CAF trains which have been delivered to the UK recently, Mk5A coaches & 397 EMUs for TransPennine Express & the 195 DMUs & 331 EMUs for Northern, so it's more than just a teething issue with the Caledonian Sleeper Mk5 coaches. Glad to see you had a good experience though. I've been wanting to try them, but have been holding off as a result of the other teething issues that have previously been reported.

i went on this last week on a one way from Edinburgh to Euston. Brilliant. Only difference to your vid was that you simply go into your cabin as all the doors are open, find your key in the room and then you can lock the door when you leave. Found the lock mechanism is bit tricky though. I think you either had to hold it against the lock for a few moments before it turned red - or double tap it to go red. Very clean toilets. Didn't think much of the club dining car in terms of decor or layout. Other than that, the staff and cabin was great. Fantastic nights sleep.

I’ve tried both the Club Room and Classic - and whilst the shower and toilet are useful I’m not convinced it’s worth the extra cost over the Classic. Also in the Club room you hear the retention tank sloshing with water all night which made me feel seasick! 😂

that stop in Edinburgh its partly to accommodate the shunting moves to join up the 3 portions into one train before it can travel to London, the rest of the stops the highlander makes are relatively short in comparison

Lovely video enjoy your sncf ones too, reason for rattling u get lot is that your classic cabin if 1st one will be positioned over top of the bogies hence u will hear all wheels noise as goes over track joints & junctions. Same applies if u are in seated coach in U.K. sat at ends of coaches. Just about all U.K. trains don’t have articulated bogies like u do in France which gives a smoother ride. Only trains in U.K. with articulated bogies are old E300 18 coach Eurostar sets built by Alstom & Anglia new built Stadler trains from Switzerland that operates London Liverpool Street to Norwich & local lines around Anglia region of U.K. Some are all electric some bi mode with mini coach containing engines

I am a fan of the older slower moving trains. Listening to the clackity clack is what overnight train travel should be about. I find the newer trains on improved tracks take away the ambience of train travel, it makes it hard to focus on the scenery. I suppose though that overnight trains would be more conducive to improved tracking and better sleeping amenities.

You missed a trick with this one. You should have booked the Fort William service. The earlier departure gives you chance to have a relaxing hour or two in the Club Carriage, where they do a mean haggis, neeps and tatties, but the real plus is waking up and having breakfast on the West Highland Line.

Everyone complains that these trains are very noisy, so it must be a design fault/issue. There were a lot of problems when the new sleeper service was introduced, but they are slowly being sorted out. ( Now I always travel during the day, because of the beautiful views.)
@rthoc71
@rthoc71 3 года назад
From engineering point view it’s down 2 things one if your cabin or choice seating is over bogies at ends carriages u hear all noise from underneath train, ie don’t sit or sleep end of coaches. U find in daytime u sit on top of bogies u hear hum traction motors. Now 2nd point some train builders install a thick rubber mat under carriage floor try eliminating noise from below, Siemens did this when 185 units were built in Germany for Trans Pennine Express in U.K. tested them on route Koln to Trier HBF. There is some noise when engines start off then sound goes altogether when engine hits its peak. 3 car sets have 2250bhp very powerful for 3 car trains, limited to 100mph they are capable of 110mph Speedo maximum is 120mph.

I had the same rattling noise when I took it in November. Think it is the door between cabins, this is there so that families can book two cabins next to each other and open it into a single 4-bed berth. As for the 92? All the ones on the sleeper are operated by GBRf, they have some in the Caledonian Sleeper livery and are supposed to supply those each night but if there's an issue they can supply one of the others.

Nice Video :-) The Mark V stock is nice and new but not very intimate in terms of comfort but certainly a better way to travel--Especially the run to Fort William, sitting in the lounge car eating breakfast and watch the highlands roll by! The Mark V stock will replace the Night Riviera Mark III sleeper stock in due course, priority is currently the Scottish services first the seen "Lowland Services" then the stock will be rolled out for the Inverness/Aberdeen and Fort William routes. It would have been nice to see the suite rooms with the wider double bed, I have the impression the smaller twin bunk cabins were the same size as on the Mark III's, but with the plethora of useful USB and mains sockets and useful cell phone bracket makes a nice touch--especially for travelers who have to plug in their Sleep Apnea devices. I have seen these coaches last year (2019) outside the factory at Beasain, Northern Spain, all on flat trucks for delivery to the UK which was a treat looking forward to these coming into service!

I tried the seats, but not the cabins, on a trip to Aviemore recently. Whilst there were fewer seats in the carriage, and more space, I found the seats were more uncomfortable than the old style ones to try to sleep on. Less cushioning and with light fittings sticking out in the wrong places. There was another person who remembered the old carriages who also found the seats more uncomfortable. I tried to reserve a cabin but none were available. I have not yet tried the cabins on the new carriages, they look great, and could easily be an improvement, but in my opinion the seated service is not as good.

I don't know if it has been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, "Caledonian Sleeper" is just a branding for the service, the TOC (franchise holder) is SERCO (or may not still be due to general funding issues caused by the Covid crisis). Serco are an outsourcing specialist much loved by the current UK government. As such they also operate prisons and immigrant detention facilities, so they have plenty of experience with catering for a captive consumer......sorry valued clients. It may also explain why the locos used sometimes carry a different branding, e.g. GBRF.

Yes, I’d like to watch a comparison presentation between the two services 👍🏻. Question ... what differences separate the standard cabin vs. club rooms vs. suites?
@ElGust
@ElGust 3 года назад
The classic rooms are just 2 single beds and a sink The clubs rooms are 2 single beds, sink, shower and toilet The suite rooms are one double bed, sink, shower and toilet

Doesn't Via Rail Canada have in storage old Nightstar (Renaissance) coaches in brand-new condition that could be used for new UK sleeper trains? Fun fact: the Via Rail Nightstar (Renaisance) coaches still have British Rail logos inside.

I personally think that rattling noise may help me sleep! Always use the ear plugs provided if you are a light sleeper!!

The rattling is caused by wheel flats they have been an issue on the new coaches The old mk3 coach's might be getting renovated and placed on a wick / Thurso to glasgow / edinburgh sleeper

Its not wheel flats, its a knocking noise underneath the coach where the bogies are. The old mk3's have all been sold for scrap or purchased by private collectors or heritage railways. Theres absolutely zero chance of Wick/Thurso to Glasgow/Edinburgh sleeper happening at all, never mind with mk3s.

3:47 the Class 92 is GBRF as GBRF drivers operate the service which allows them to use their GBRF traction

I assume there were issues with availability of locos in Caledonian Sleeper livery on the night in question

Mercenary Pen Well, I’t doesn’t matter what livery the locomotive is, you actually see the caledonian sleeper liveried locomotives on freight services for GBRf. But yeah, your pretty much right!

Travelling on the 29th just wondering if the corridor space is quite well or cramped as I have a large suitcase to travel with?
