rewatching because it makes me feel better. i just moved to a new highschool and i feel like everyone already has friends and i am super lonely and depressed all the time. clubs are going to happen soon, so i hope i find my people for that. i am super scared and it sucks not knowing people and be awkward and quiet and bad at socializing, so i really hope i make friends eventually, but if not, college is always a thing.

All of those stories are somewhat relatable to me. I was born Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Yellowknife after one year-ish in Regina. My mom and I then spent some time moving back and forth between Yellowknife, Hay River, and Enterprise. Well, actually, we stayed in Enterprise (where my Grandma on my Mom's side lives) for a little while, then went back to Yellowknife. Then, my Mom ran into some financial trouble after breaking up with her girlfriend. She had to leave me with my Grandma in Enterprise, and go back to Yellowknife to figure some things out so that we could live together again while my Grandma and I had fun going in between Enterprise and Hay River because they're like, *really* close to each other. This is because Enterprise didn't have much in the way of groceries or high-end restaurants or video game shops or blockbusters or something like that since it was a small Hamlet--in fact, it wasn't really a Hamlet, even just an over glorified truck stop with a few houses around it, a little town hall or something like that, a library across the street from where the truck stop (which was behind my grandma's house) was and there was some sort of community center that did activities for kids and a gigantic stage where they held concerts and small-scale festivals with kid's stuff like bouncy houses or castles. Hay River wasn't *too* much better because it only had one skyscraper (which wasn't even built properly) and one little restaurant, one Chinese place, and a Chinese-style restaurant that my family went to on special occasions. There was also a gas station with a corner store that's better than the one in Enterprise because it served spuds (which were the best thing ever when I was growing up) a small blockbuster store, and another DVD store that was locally owned and other stores that are either mostly locally owned or a part of a bigger conglomerate like Zellers or something. It also had three schools, a library, and a police station and fire station and two churches. My family also lived in Hay River because we have a house (or "townhouse" as we liked to call it) in Hay River that was built by my Great Grandpa. There was also this little playground I would go to occasionally behind my Grandma's house in Enterprise where little kids would go play every so often because it was right next to a preschool or something. And my Grandma owns and operates this daycare in Hay River called Treehouse. Um...sorry. I got lost in the rabbit hole that is nostalgia. Anyways, three years after living in that small town, my Mom came back into my life and said that she's figured some things out. Here's where things get *really* relevant; during those three years, I formed a really close relationship with this girl I met in Kindergarten named Shelby. And when my Mom came around and said, "Hey, you don't have to live in Hay River anymore! I've found a place in Yellowknife for us!" I was met with a really hard decision; do I stay, and continue my "dates" with Shelby (I was a really weird kid back then) or do I go and live with my Mom, who I haven't seen nor heard from in a long time. In the end, I went with my Mom, and never saw Shelby again. Yellowknife wasn't special...apart from the A&W that was in it's airport. I spent another year in Yellowknife, then moved to where I am now. Right here, in Edmonton, Alberta. The place I used to go to often for visits to my doctor. Yeah, I have a disability and some mental health problems (which I diagnosed myself with) and as a result, I had to go to the doctor's office often. It made me mature more than I should have as a child--well that, and a lot of other personal things made me jaded to the rest of the world and as much as I like to be an optimistic leftist with a heart of gold and a social butterfly, there's a lot of things preventing me from being that guy internally; one, I think that I'm going through something of an existential crisis right now. Two, I do a lot of things that aren't normal for adults to do the first of which being staying with my Mom. And three, I've had 21 years on Earth to learn this basic concept, yet, I still don't know how to make friends because I don't know how to start a conversation with someone nor do I know how to keep that conversation rolling. And my brain works a bit differently than everyone else's. See, I have cerebral palsy and luckily, it hasn't forced me to be super glued to a wheelchair and unable to talk for the rest of my life. But because of this, I don't think straight too often, I'm not as strong as the average person, and because I can't think straight, I have a hard time remembering things and I have a bad sense of direction (unless I've gone to a place more than once then, I know how to get to a certain place) and I also am not funny because to be funny, you need to be clever enough to think up of a joke or a new joke instead of a shitty pun. Over the years that I've lived in Edmonton, I've met some people. Some were cool, some weren't, but all in all, I have to say that I miss some of them because I'm a high school graduate, now and I don't have friends or know anyone anymore. That's another thing; coping with graduating when you've never made friends with anyone outside of school. Because of this, graduating feels like moving to a new town or city again. And now, all I ever do is play video games, write fanfiction novels, and play around on the internet with my cellphone. I feel sort of alone ☹️😒😞 Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!

I moved during 2018 and was homeschooled for 1 year. I got the contacts of my old friends from 2018 last year, but I feel that it’s hard to talk to them because I don’t know what interests they have or anything about them anymore. I only have 3 friends who actually talk to me and 2 others who I talk to every now and then.

Kids in my school were ruthless, it’s either you make friends in the beginning of the school year and find you’re place or else you’re self esteem is going down like the titanic by the end of the day.

I’ve studied at 16 schools and lived in 20+ places across china and aus and the us by now. The only friend i have is my goddamn luggage.

It’s nice you can stay in touch with old friends now over the internet instead of them completely falling of the face of the earth

I've been to 4 schools and one of them was really a bad experience. .. I got 2 friends the 2nd day (not really friends) which turned out to be the biggest mistake I did.. they were all nice and friendly for almost a month and then I realized they are just taking advantage of me and they don't really want me then I kept my distance and for so many days I was all alone.that lonely feeling. Then I slowly became a part of another friend group and they were just the group of people I wanted. They never treated me as a new kid. And I remember the other two so called ex friends being jealous of our friendship. They even tried to get in to our group but my buddies knew what I've been through because of them.

As someone who also grew up traveling to many other different places (Europe, New York, Washington DC, Asia, etc) this was relatable, except for the part where you was said that "I knew who I was compatible with" or something like that. And weirdly, travelling made me less introverted when the books I read while travelling mostly showed that: the more you travel = trust issues, blah blah blah, but honestly I miss those friends I knew and wish that I still kept contact with them, but I'm happy that I already knew them, oh and I'm also Asian! But I wasn't really made fun of tiny eyes, but a big forehead? Idk

In elementary I sort of had someone like Michael. My school is k-12 so I never really changed schools much but my environment was constantly changing. During 5th grade I remembered I was fitting in less and was more outside of things. But that changed once middle school began. My “Michael” became my best friend and I learned from her personality to include myself in things if I wanted too. Right now I’m in high school and my “Michael” has already switched schools but we still talk sometimes. Mostly when we’re stalking each other’s social 😂
