My 14 year old son and I watched the remake as well and we too, thought at times that Ariel's head looked too big for her body. It still ended up being a great movie though! I couldn't imagine how challenging it is to create a movie that is mostly or even partly underwater.
@@gionnijohnson408And boyyyyy, is it DIFFERENT than the Disney adaptations! 😂 In the Disney movie, Ariel marries Eric and the two live happily ever after. In Andersen's fairy tale, the Little Mermaid takes the knife and agrees to kill the prince. But when she tries to do it, she finds that she can't kill him, and instead, she sacrifices herself to save his life and turns into sea foam. Oh and not to mention, Ursula's spell made Ariel walking on her feet incredibly painful, as if she was walking on knives. The original story is wayyy dark.
Yes mermaids are immune to jellyfish stingers they are part fish many fish are immune and its also fantasy. So yes mermaid are immune and they're also magical.
I don't know if anyone's said it yet, but this was actually Melissa McCarthy singing. She had sung in the past, but took extra vocal lessons for Poor Unfortunate Souls. Everyone in this cast is actually singing their own songs (and there's also a cut song of Javier Bardem doing a Triton song, but that was eventually cut from the movie)
Fun fact: The woman in the marketplace that gives Ariel the "dinglehopper" is Jodie Benson, the original voice for Ariel in the animated classic. Such a nice "passing of the torch" if you ask me.
@@amandagrubbs3000 I really like Jodi’s look on her face when Ariel uses the fork as a comb probably saying to herself “Wow! She picks up my qualities quicker than me when I got the voice role of her.”
Hans Christian Anderson, the Author of Little Mermaid book was an Aries so the director decided to use his sign as a cute way to tell Eric Ariel’s name,Halle is an Aries as well,so that adds a cute element.
He also was an explorer! The ending in this remake where Ariel & Eric leave to explore new land & adventure is kinda also an Easter egg to Hans I’d say. Also it’s kinda full circle moment that Ariel in this remake is a black mermaid. Because Hans got the mermaid folk lore from Africa! Full circle moment
I don't have a problem with Ariel defeating Ursula in theory but the cute thing in the original is that they saved each other. Ariel saves Eric at the start of the film and Eric saves Ariel at the end they saved each other because they are equals. And Eric being the one to defeat Ursula makes Triton's change of heart about humans make more sense.
Eric stops ursula from killing Ariel in this movie. Did you miss the scene when he threw the spear at her under water seconds before she blasted Ariel?
Ariel’s not the only person who needed to listen, I know there wouldn’t be much of a movie otherwise, but had Triton tried to understand Ariel’s curiosity about the human world even though his feelings about his wife’s death are valid, she wouldn’t have been vulnerable to Ursula.
And then she did the same thing with her daughter too. But in a way that's realistic because so many people think they'll do better than their own parents/be a better parent and end up making the same or similar mistakes by parenting the same way or going the complete opposite. In many cases both sets (current and past generation) love their children in their own way but went about certain things the wrong way.
The stage show version touched on this. Triton gets a song while he's looking for her about how he recognizes this is 100% his fault and when he finds her he's going to sit down and actually listen to her to talk about what she wants and needs. It's why at the end he doesn't even hesitate to make her human, because he recognizes that she needs to choose the life SHE wants. I love the new movie and the original, but the stage show is hands down my favorite version.
watching the behind the scenes of the shipwreck made me more afraid of the ocean (even tho it was in a wavepool) but the way they filmed it was so beautiful
The sisters represent the different oceans and seas from around the world. Which is why they are different cultures. Even their names sound like the body of water they represent
Yes and that makes perfect sense what doesn't is saying they have same mom. Which is stated in the movie it makes no sense he could have daughters of every race when he's Latino and had an Asian black Hispanic and white daughter
@@cloeshay87well i imagine that the concept of race doesn’t exist within the ocean. i feel like if you go with that, it makes it more easier to believe 😂
40:20 In mythology, as far back as ancient Greece, mermaids were often of an evolution of sirens, using their voices to lead sailors into disaster, but with fish bodies instead of bird bodies. I always liked how the Disney movie referenced that by making Ariel's voice kind of hypnotic. In fact, in spanish there is no word for mermaid, both mythological creatures are called Sirens. The spanish title for this story? "La Sirenita" which translates to "The Little Siren".
They actually gave Ursula two extra tentacles in this. She was originally a squid person (they reference it with the squidling rivalry line) so I think that’s why she used them more this time around so we had time to notice. The likely changed it because everyone always mistook her for an octopus hybrid instead of squid
If Ursula had only six tenticles in the original, how was she a squid? I though a squid had two more tentacles than an octopus, not two less..(Stricktly speaking i think an octopus only has arms and no tenticles, while a squid has eight arms and two tenticles) I think the reason for her only having six arms in the original was so she'd be easier to animate, and we're ment to count her actual arms with her octopus arms, which then would be eight. While that not being the case in the remake.
@@MannuNilsen idk it’s from some official Disney interview where they were like “she’s actually a squid” not sure which one. It’s somewhere in RU-vid I’m sure
Which is funny because an Octopus does not have tentacles. They have arms. Tentacles are what squids have. Squids have 6 arms and two tentacles, which are the longer arms with the triangular ends. I never understood why for all these years they have called her half squid, when she never was.
@@j4r3d29 I was simply saying, even if you like them, they're doing well-enough regardless. Speaking of ads, everything since I got my new Galaxy Z Fold 5 about a month ago, I've experienced no more than 20 ads while using the yt app.
Bro, all the SpongeBob edits had me dying. 😂😂😂 I agree, this movie was really good, particularly the love story. I think Halle did far better than okay. She was wonderful, seeing as most of her work has to be done without words. I think some of the CGI can be weird, but was mostly well done, especially in IMAX. But I also try to remember that our first movie with predominantly CGI underwater visuals was Aquaman 5 years ago and this is a step up from that. We still have time to perfect it. Your analysis on how the industry works is spot on and most people can’t see that, because it doesn’t really fall in line with what they want. I’ve had debates about it.
So I'm a black woman (born in '86), I saw the re-release of the original in the cinemas here in London UK when I turned 6 (it was actually the first film I'd ever seen at the cinema). I cried loads of happy tears at the end. As there were no black Disney princesses at the time (and even for years after that), I would play "make believe" and wear a long red jumper on my head to pretend I was Ariel. In 2018 I started my loc journey, and then THIS remake comes along, and I discover that this Ariel is black AND has hair that incorporates locs. Mine are now mid-back length. Talk about full circle!!
The CGI really isn’t that bad. There’s some shots, but overall it’s alright. The only CGI on Ariel is the hair and tail, and they actually had to train Halle to move like a mermaid behind the scenes. Maybe she just has a large head.
Actually her mermaid form is entirely CGI. If you watch the behind the scenes of it. You’ll see only her face and hands are real. Which all in all it’s actually pretty cool. I couldn’t tell exactly she was 97% CGI. I assumed it was 50/50.
What's been throwing me is people being able to suspend disbelief to have mermaid rulers but NOT that they could all be from the same biological mother and father? come on now! LOL
So happy to have recently found your channel! I love your edits, your 300 intro is hiiiiilarious, the movies you cover, and your reactions! So happy to be apart of the Mellverse!!! Can't wait for more!
The sisters are ACTUALLY what they probably should’ve been in the original, they were always supposed to represent Seven Seas , the actor who played Triton even said they took on the essence of the waters there were conceived in .
I don't think people were upset about Ariel making the final blow because "woman power bad" it's mostly because now Eric may as well be a background character. In the original, Ariel saved him from the shipwreck, and then Eric saved her from Ursula. They were equals by the end of the film.
Part of Your World Reprise II is my absolute favourite thing in this movie. You’re right that Halle absolutely killed the singing. And Melissa’s Ursula was hilarious. And while I missed the big finale song, when she hugs Triton and says “I love you Daddy” and the music crescendos…. I let out the biggest sob out of no where in theatres. Glad you liked this movie overall.
I loved this movie. Halle Bailey is so well cast as Ariel. I’ve been a huge fan of the original animated movie since I was a kid. I loved all the changes and appreciate the new songs and character developments in this movie. I like this Prince Eric interpretation WAY more than the animated one. They only thing I miss was the fish with instruments. 😂
38:53 That's a fun little detail, because real-life Octopus tentacles *do* have a mind of their own. About two thirds of Octupus neurons are located in the tentacles, and they have a certain level of autonomy. Also, the suckers on the tentacles can *taste* stuff they touch. 😏
I am actually surprised he is criticizing the CGI so much. I didn't notice anything strange except for the terrible design of Flounder. I'm not a professional so maybe that's why? 🤷♀️
There are no VFX artists on ‘Marvel’s side of Disney’ - they’re all independent studios contracted to work on these films. The reason Disney/Marvel are being criticised is because of their unrealistic demands from these VFX studios, not because they’re mistreating artists personally.
I do wish they would’ve included the chef. But didn’t she do a BEAUTIFUL job? I hate that people were mean about this!!!! It wasn’t better than the animated one, but what movie ever is when we are talking about fantasy? She was beautiful and wonderful and deserved that part! I have no problem with any fantasy character being any gender or race. However I do have a problem with factual characters being portrayed as another race. Only factual ones. Indigenous persons should only be portrayed with indigenous persons. Etc.
I liked that they gave a little more depth to her and Eric's relationship, showing they both have adventurous spirits wanting to travel and explore the world.
I am so glad my kids have this movie to grow up with but I will never forgive Disney & LMM for that damn scuttlebutt song bc they are OBSESSED & we listen to it constantly.
Uhhhh definitely not better than the original lol, but it was alright for a live action remake!😂 Definitely better than the Mulan live action they butchered that😩😂
Anyone can nitpick about shots where the CGI didn't quite hit, but I have to strongly disagree with you. The rendering for Ariel was pretty well dome! The only spot where I was like YIKES was when Ariel was suspended in the whirlpool during the final battle.
I get some of the nitpicks and criticisms but I loved this movie and it doesn’t take away from original it wasn’t bad at all to me and Halle did brilliantly as Ariel same goes to Melissa as Ursula they brought characters to life they were my favorite
I loved this movie. My only critiques were the cgi, her hair, and the dress. Cgi was bad. Hair color was inconsistent throughout the movie (I also wish it was just a tad more red rather than orange). They were trying to be symbolic with the dress but I think if they were only going to put her in one dress and least make it prettier. Halle and Melissa carried the movie for sure. I truly enjoyed it still. Im definitely going to watch it again.
Of course it looks different from the animated version. This is a live action movie aimed at adults, not kids. So the crab is gonna look like a crab. The fish is gonna look like a fish. But they still talk. And Ariel's hair is still red, it's just more natural instead of the vibrant tone from the animation. Furthermore, Scuttle is portrayed as a female northern gannet diving bird (not a male seagull) because they are able to breathe underwater for a short period of time. Ursula's look and behaviour in the animated film was inspired by an American drag queen called Divine. To prepare for her role as Ursula, Melissa McCarthy actually consulted with the drag queen community. One fun little detail is when Ursula is creating the potion to become Vanessa and the main ingredient is a bottle shaped like a human stomach. This is a play on the phrase "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach". Many people miss the fact that Ursula and Triton are siblings in this version. Triton had banished Ursula from his kingdom and disowned her for practicing black magic, which is what motivates her actions. It was cut from the animation but was included in the 2007 Broadway musical. Ariel and her sisters have the same mum but they represent the seven seas which is why each of them are a different race. Regarding the opening quote: Throughout the film Ariel cannot produce tears, even when she's sad and/or crying, UNTIL she becomes a human. Scuttle's "Has Ariel killed the prince yet?" is most likely referencing the original fairy tale, in which the nameless mermaid is destined to turn into sea foam and die after the prince marries another woman. The mermaid's sisters tell her that the only way she can escape this fate is if she kills the prince with an enchanted dagger. However, the mermaid can't go through with it and instead accepts her death. Ariel 'signed' the contract by giving Ursula a scale from her mermaid tail, which actually covers up a plot hole from the animation where she literally signs it with a quill pen. Since she could clearly read and write English, why didn't she just explain herself by writing it down? There's a big chance Eric wouldn't have believed her but it's worth a try right?I Ariel is given 3 days to kiss Eric and make him fall in love with her so she can remain human permanently. Ursula cheats 3 times to keep Ariel from being able to do just that. First, she secretly puts a memory spell on Ariel so she won't remember she needs Eric's kiss to stay human, and every time she is reminded she forgets immediately or falls asleep (that wasn't in the animation). Second, she sends her pet eels to prevent Ariel and Eric from kissing at the end of Kiss the Girl. Finally, she transforms herself into a human with Ariel's voice to trick Eric into marrying her. They changed the dingelhopper scene to include Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in the animation. She is the lady who gives Ariel the dinglehopper in the market. It's a symbolism of her passing the torch to Halle. Regarding the colours in the sea, someone said it's supposed to look all dark and gloomy from Ariel's perspective because that's how she sees it, which honestly makes sense. I loved the way Eric points out the star constellations to Ariel (which as a sailor he knows well) and starts guessing her name. It was such a beautiful improvement from the animated version where Sebastian just whispered her name to Eric. It added so much depth and charm to the scene. I like that Eric's character arch is more than just being the prince Ariel falls in love with. He has a backstory and a family. He, like Ariel, has a parent who believes they know what is best for their child. Eric being adopted is supposed to highlight the fact that he feels like he doesn't belong. Much like Ariel, he feels there is so much more to explore and discover, only the other way around. They share a bond over their love for collecting treasures. I really like how they fleshed out their romance more and actually showed they had a connection, instead of just 'love at first sight' and physical attraction. It also helped a lot that Halle and Jonah had an insane amount of chemistry. They also made it a lot clearer in this version that Ariel didn't want to become a human just for Eric. She was already interested and curious of life on land BEFORE she met him. Her motivations were rooted in her not fitting in and wanting to explore. She would have gone up one way or another, she just happened to have met Eric along the way. I think that’s why they added the bit about her not remembering to kiss Eric. They didn’t want the whole premise of her giving up her voice to be about chasing a guy, rather, about her chasing her dreams. Triton destroying her belongings was always the catalyst for her going to Ursula, not Eric in itself. They still kept the romance, it didn't take anything away from it. Some people have a problem with Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric as if it takes anything away from his character. He literally saved Ariel's life when Ursula was about to kill her by throwing the harpoon. He also saved Max. Ariel may have given him a little nudge but he was almost there anyways. And even so, it still speaks to Eric's character. Just like he didn't save Ariel in exhange for her saving him. He saved her because he loved her, and more importantly because he's a decent person. Ursula trying to kill Eric made so much more sense because she didn't care about Eric, it was about hurting Ariel. I wasn't sure about Javier Bardem's portrayal of King Triton at first, but the more I think about it the more I like it. In the animation he clearly had some anger issues, and while that is understandable, he doesn't have to be all screaming and intimidating to have an impact. He looks and sounds more disappointed and scared here rather than angry, which is not only a lot more respectable but also a lot more believable. He feels more like a worried father than just some big scary dude with an anger management problem. As for the acting as a whole, Halle and Melissa clearly stood out, but Jonah, Daveed, Jacob, Awkwafina and even Javier did a great job as well. Also, Jessica Alexander as Vanessa absolutely stole the 5 minutes she was on screen. As for the music, I think Halle absolutely nailed Part Of Your World. She has such an innocent and naive quality to her voice yet powerful at the same time. The power in that high note in the reprise is incredible. I love Melissa's version of Poor Unfortunate Souls. There is so much sass and character in her voice. The fact that Melissa had little to no singing experience and didn't even know she could sing is INSANE. Under The Sea translates surprisingly well to live action. Daveed Diggs adds his own flavour to it and Halle's little adlibs add so much to the song. Kiss The Girl is just magical, musically and visually. I love Wild Uncharted Waters and how it has her siren song behind it. Jonah has an amazing voice and you can hear he has a theatre backround. Also, this is random but I love how you can hear his strong English accent in every single word. For The First Time is great and allows Halle to be more playful yet vulnerable. I was appalled when I first heard Scuttlebutt, but it has grown on me and now I actually kinda like it. And while some people didn't like the ending scene with Triton, Ariel's sisters and all the other merpeople, I loved it. Yeah we didn't really see Ariel interacting with any of them besides her family, but neither did we in the animation and I still felt emotional seeing them at the end. It was kind of showing how their two worlds were forever united with their marriage. There are only really two things I have a problem with in the whole movie: The lack of Flounder and lack of Ariel's wardrobe. I didn't have any problem with the way Flounder looked, I just felt like he was absolutely useless in the movie. He barely had any lines and wasn't even on screen that much. I needed more of him. And, obviously, they could've dressed Halle in a potato bag and she still would've looked gorgeous. But Ariel's wardrobe on land felt lackluster. She wore the same blue dress the entire time! Even the dress at the end during the wedding was the same one, only in pink. What about the blue dress with the bow? Or the sparkling purple dress? The wedding dress? Why not bring them to life and just modernise them a bit? I don't feel that their reunion at the end was underwhelming like some people do. If anything, I like how simple it was and that they didn't speak. They communicated enough with their faces. At the end of the day, this is a movie about a mermaid turning into a human and fish that can talk. Not everything has to make sense. The thing is, there are some people who will never be satisfied because it will never be as good as the animated version. You can still enjoy and appreciate this movie for what it is.
One thing I love about the original is how she and Eric are kind of a team. It isn't all hero Eric or all Ariel, and I don't like that they made Prince Eric such a casper milquetoast in this. Just one or two MINOR things could have really built up the relationship and feel of them as a couple. I still like it, but just a few minor issues like that.
@@sweetcinnamonpnchkin wasnt that coverend when ariel tries to explain that humans arent bad but her father doesn't hear her until the end of the movie where he finally listens. Also even in the live action eric still jumps into the ocean to save her and stays by her side the whole time. idk that just what i think
@@sweetcinnamonpnchkin Triton wouldn't have known that Eric defeated Ursula in the 1989 film either. He was a tiny polyp at the bottom of the area of the ocean they were at and wouldn't have been able to see what was going on. So in reality, Ariel or Eric defeating Ursula isn't a game changer when it comes to how Triton feels about humans. And he didn't finally listen to Ariel because of Eric and make her human because he trusted Eric, he did it because he truly saw how much she loved him and everything she was willing to do for him.
Javier Bardem "King Triton" mentioned in an interview in mexico that all his daughters have the same mother, they were conceived in each sea and thats why they are so different
@@amandagrubbs3000 I like his music, don’t know much about him but I’m glad he wasn’t casted for this role I’m sorry but he wouldn’t of done it justice like Jonah did
The daughters all look different because they represent the 7 seas. They were also all different in the original, just not in race. But they do have the same mom, actually 😅
I watched from on Snapchat that the sisters tails represent colors of the rainbow. How they all have different colors of mermaid tails in the animated movie
@TampaBayBuccaneers330 makes about as much sense as half fish people and talking sea creatures... Love how you people like two pick and choose to mask/rationalize your bigotry. If you have a problem with diversity, you're racist. Period.
@TampaBayBuccaneers330you know what else’s doesn’t make sense? Mermaids. Talking animal in the seas but only one talking animal on land. It’s a fantasy film meaning it has not rules. And if you want to get like sciencey plenty of fish change colour depending on their environment, change shape, change from fresh to salt water and even change gender. So it’s not wildly crazy that if the girls were born in different oceans they could resemble those oceans ✨magically✨😂
@TampaBayBuccaneers330 Ah yes because everyone in the whole world are supposed to be white, right? Yes because a talking aquatic animals and mermaids make sense. lmao What a dumb take.
the fact that there are actual people upset at anyone’s positive opinion towards this movie is hilarious, y’all do know you’re allowed to feel differently then others, we aren’t a damn hive mind, Mel liking a movie you have no taste for doesn’t make him “mentally i’ll” or “dumb”, it just makes him have a different opinion than yours, if you can’t accept that maybe don’t watch reaction youtubers because you can’t bully them into agreeing with you, and as someone whose been watching youtube since 2010 i can tell you that all that viewers like to do
Another thing keeping original high-concept, character-driven movies from being made is that too many people skip the theaters and wait until streaming to see them instead. But a movie needs to have the potential to make its money back in theaters to be made in the first place and be put on a streaming service thereafter. We are putting the cart before the hose.
The only things I actively dislike about this movie is the Scuttlebut song, and the way Ariel moves up the rock right before the iconic wave shot (16:05) Everything else I either loved or felt neutral about. Overall, I loved this movie! I really enjoyed everything the expanded on, and all (except for one) of the new songs they added! I love that they gave more time for Ariel and Eric’s relationship to grow organically.
just some super brief info on the cgi in the movie for those interested!! they were having people work on ariels cgi specifically literally up until release, which can explain part of the problems. trust when i say in particular they heard everyone shit talking the hair and fixed it up literally to the last minute
Thank you so much for doing a reaction on this movie I've been waiting for RU-vidr I like to do reaction for this movie cuz I am a huge fan of The Little mermaid 😻😻😻😻
It is definitely not better than the original. I do not feel like I have to be a fan of this version of the little mermaid simply because I’m black. I’m not going to be a cheerleader when I didn’t really like it. Not because of Halle Berry necessarily just because I’m not a fan of the live action versions . It definitely wasn’t better than the original. Not even close, but it’s as good as any of the rest of the live action versions. I just don’t think you can make a live action version that mirrors the animated one and did not be lacking. You just can’t do what you can do in animated movies in live action versions. The breakout role though was Melissa’s McCarthy. She nailed Ursula and the CGI involved in it was on point. The only thing that makes this woke is I think why they would pick a black actress to do the live action version of a character that was definitely not black in the animated version. Why would you do that? Especially we have so many really amazing characters that are black characters from our own folklore and folktales That we could pull from if we want to make a movie about water, people or mermaids with Black people. We don’t have to hijack fairytales we have plenty to pull from. That being said, I think it was as good as any other live action version. I’m not a fan of the live action versions.
The voice actor for Flounder is the same person in both movies. I can't imagine how hard it was to do CGI for actual people to live underwater. I didn't let that bother me. Halle Bailey's singing was top notch and her rendition of Part of Your World brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was really well done. And I was 15 when the original cartoon came out, so I have no childhood nostalgia there, but I have always thought Disney movies were really good.
I think most people dislike the movie for another reason than for the 'wokeness'. I don't like woke stuff too but I think it's completely unnecessary to make live action versions/remakes of already existing movies. It's plain unoriginal and uncreative. Why not coming up with NEW ideas and NEW heroes, you know what I mean? Take Encanto for example. It was absolutely brilliant and a great new idea. Why take the classics and redo them? There is no need for that really.
@@felidaunknown5923 Unbelievable what profound less than ideal crap you people are spewing! Here in Europe racism doesn't exist on the same level as it does in America, that's why we have no need for "wokeness". America has poisoned the minds of many people in many countries and I'll never forgive you for it! Every single time a new situation emerges you HAVE to create another dumb term or you wouldn't be happy! Because of you racism and homophobia is exploding despite what you're trying to achieve. You are so stuck in your own believes (echo chamber), you cannot see or acknowledge the chasm you're creating between the two parties. BOTH parties are at fault actually. The way you're going about things by using activism as your tool is just plain wrong, therefore I can only shake my head in defeat. Here's a fact for your probably def ears: Calling black people POCs is more racist than calling them "black"! Now think about it for 10 seconds..... Here we go: The made up term "POC" is usually ONLY used in regards to black people, even though it should by definition include ALL people aside from "whites" of course. Another reason is the term POC creates this illusion of being different, special even. But aren't well all the same? Or are you perhaps racist towards white people thinking yourself better? (There's a fantastic video called "What are We Doing to White People?") The ONLY correct method to ending racism (and homophobia for that matter) is to simply stop talking about it! Astonishing, isn't it? I know you most likely can't believe me, but if you give me the benefit of the doubt then try watching videos about racism from black youtubers. One of them talked about how Africans sold their own to the white people of America. Because if you think about it, simply "kidnapping" people from another race from OVERSEAS is entirely unrealistic. Lastly, based on your comment I can imagine you being one of those TikToker's who are saying things like "down with the patriarchy" or "kill all white people" or "I hate being of the same race as the oppressor". For the haters of dislikers of the cgi May i note that halle was on wires for most of her undersea movements and they just added her cgi body on later so in a sense its still the same body Also note that scuttle is a northern gannet Gannets can breath underwater for 30 seconds so tlm is glorifying it but also note its a fantasy film
Honestly this movie was so disappointing. It lacked the heart and charm that the animated movie had. I watched it once but I'll never go for it again. Very sad
Apart from the switch of who defeated Ursula, I really don’t have many nitpicks with the movie. But I agree that Ariel should’ve had more outfits, but not too many nitpicks
