I love that they gave Eric more agency as a character by having him also collect artifacts from his voyages, similar to Ariel. However, I wish that they'd kept the scene of him ramming the ship into Ursula, as opposed to having Ariel do it herself.

Imo it has more impact, because she wouldn't have known how to do that unless she was curious and resourceful. In my version she would have Aquaman'd a whale over with Sebastian's help who would have pushed while Eric steered so everyone would have a piece Also Ursula would return to normal size and King Daddy would turn her into an urchin "there, now your outside matches your inside" "see ya Prickles" as Seb punts her away

I agree, the change doesn’t make sense, they just did it so she could be the one to like “slay the dragon”. But it made more sense for Eric to do it, since he would know how, and Ursula was distracted by Ariel. Plus him doing that made Triton see humans aren’t so bad

09:48 Rob Marshall stated in an interview that Ariel here is 18. In comparison to the 1989 version they aged them up here yet retaining that 3 year gap like on the original. Also they released a prequel book (name: Against the Tide) on Ariel, aligned to this movie, and just to make it clear. . . ARIEL IS CURIOUS & IN LOVE WITH THE SURFACE WORLD SINCE SHE WAS YOUNG, NOT ERIC. He just happens to be there when she got really pissed off with her Dad and luckily this human also faces the same struggle as hers, royalty, duty etc. And that's why when Ursula said "Go back home to daddy and never leave again!" that further pushed her to agree on their deal.

She was good, but there's countless known and unknown actors who could have done as good or better. Some of her acting was very average, and line delivery off at times. Although the film is badly directed and generally has some writing issues so I suppose she can be given the benefit of the doubt for some of it.

Ariel killing Ursula at the end was actually in the original storyboard for the animated film! They changed the fight scene in the end so Eric did the final blow. So I thought it was a great call back and backed up how this Ariel takes things into her own hands.

I grew up in Greece and we'd watch Disney movies with greek voice overs when I was younger. As you can imagine the songs are sung by greek singers and are not translated word to word for rhyming purposes. As kids we memorized the songs in Greek and I couldn't fathom that these weren't the "official" soundtracks, it took years before I listened to the songs in English. First time I watched the original little mermaid and realized after she meets Eric she sings "part of YOUR world" instead of "that world" I literally cried my eyes out 😭

Eric taught Ariel how to steer a carriage. The latter was steering his ship and that's how the former knew how to do it! Also, the dance scene and the chemistry between both the prince (Jonah Hauer-King) and Ariel (Halle Bailey) is amazing! By the way Flounder acting like a fountain in "Kiss the Girl" is so precious!

i like how they gave more power to the 'siren voice' It's implied that one reason Eric survived is because Ariel sang when she first saved him. Ursula says 'no siren voice, because that wouldn't be fair' Venessa's song confused Eric through Ariel's siren voice. And, it makes the movie a little bit darker, but i do like to think the level of infatuation Eric felt towards finding the mysterious woman who saved him is partially because of the magic of the siren voice. It's not just that Ariel's voice is beautiful, it's literally enchanting

It really drives me nuts when people criticize Eric for not recognizing Ariel right away. Man definitely had a concussion and only saw her dark, hazy outline with the full sun directly behind her head, for a total of 2 seconds. How you expect him to know what she looked like?

But in the animated version Eric was definitely having a deja vu moment when he saw Ariel as a human, which this version lacks. I don't see why people can't criticize the movie for missing out on that detail in the animated version.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the movie. Halle was so cute in it, I really liked Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Eric was pretty charming. There were stuff I didn't like about it though so I thought I'd list my pros and cons list. I'm probably not going to remember everything but the stuff I mention are stuff that really stood out to me. Pros:Halle's singing and character performance in general, Melissa's badass performance as Ursula including Poor Unfortunate Souls (even though I was disappointed at the removal of "don't underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE!), Eric was cute and charming, I was personally really blown away by the final battle scene, the visuals despite the CGI not being the best, Ariel and Eric's chemistry, both Part of Your World numbers and Flounder was pretty cute. Cons:The casting for King Triton. Javier honestly was way too wooden. He showed pretty much no emotion,I personally was disappointed by the Under the Sea number mainly because I wanted there to be a full on band like in the animated movie, Scuttle...now I personally like Scuttle in the cartoon but in the live action, I found Scuttle significantly more annoying. That song that Scuttle did when announcing Eric's plan to propose to Ariel was honestly really cringey and unnecessary. I was also disappointed that they removed the Triton's Daughters number as well as like I mentioned the "importance of BODY LANGUAGE" line in Poor Unfortunate Souls. I also wish they gave Ariel more of a wardrobe like I wanted to see her in that pink dinner dress and the shimmering dress when she and Eric reunite at the end. Overall, it was a fun movie that I will gladly rewatch. It wasn't perfect like it could definitely have been better but it was still a fun time. Also I know my cons list seems pretty big compared to my pros list but a lot of the pros do kinda overpower the cons if that makes sense.

I was actually shocked when i heard Aquafina as scuttle, in the original scuttle is a male so I’m surprise they gave scuttle a women voice actor. The scuttlebut song with her and Sebastian was the one song that i think was unnecessary but i enjoyed Aquafina’s performance as scuttle in general. I feel the cgi was focused mainly on Ursula which i think another reason why people enjoyed Melissa’s as her. She gave her performance and she did it so well.

Halle's singing gives me chills *every* time I re-listen to it, whether on my own or in reactions. Hearing her hit those high notes of "Part of Your World" in theaters, I almost got emotional. I've also really grown attached to "Wild Uncharted Waters," since my first listen, mostly for how much I appreciate, between this and "Evermore," that the Disney Princes are getting the chance to be just as poetic and emotional about their love lives as the Princesses are. 😊 I also didn't notice this initially until I watched an Eric/Ariel edit, but the emphasis on *hands* in this movie, and the way it all comes full circle is👌. First: Ariel reaching out of the grotto, her hand empty and her face pained. It's then followed by the shot of her reflections touching as she (epically) swims up the spotlight to break the surface. After rescuing him, she touches Eric's face as she sings to him, marking their first loving contact. When Triton destroys the Eric statue, she cradles one of his broken hands within her own. And in the end, after everything, it is *Eric* who reaches out to *her* during the battle with Ursula, the camera framing their hands as they tightly clasp, solidifying them on the same side at long last. 🥺🤝

I felt like the underwater sheen the mermaids have on their skin is almost like they have tiny clear scales over those parts of their bodies. Which is kind of an interesting way to think of mermaids, having scales all over but with some fishy parts and some more human parts. I absolutely loved the addition of the "first time" song, it's one of my favorites. I liked the sentiments of Prince Eric's song, but I feel like the way it was composed made it stand away from the way the other songs sounded in the movie. I also really liked the addition of Prince Eric being a collector too, because it gave them something to bond over. I like this version of Grimsby better too. I didn't get to watch this movie in theaters because the underwater scenes make me uncomfortable, I don't know if it's sort of uncanny valley or a little bit of motion sickness, but I think it's because of the way they animated the hair to move.

I don't have a problem with Ariel defeating Ursula in theory but the cute thing in the original is that they saved each other. Ariel saves Eric from drowning at the start of the film then Eric saves Ariel by trowing the harpoon Then Ariel saves Eric again by making Ursula miss her blast with the trident And then Eric saves Ariel at the end by defeating Ursula. They saved each other because they are equals. And Eric being the one to defeat Ursula makes Triton's change of heart about humans make more sense.

I agree with you! It shows their partnership. On the other hand, when talking to Triton, Ariel can rightly say that it was HER hand that killed Ursula. Eric is completely innocent of spilling ANY mer-folk blood, even an evil one. Taken all for all, it's a pretty minor argument, but it's there.

One more thing! The costume and hair department completely ruined Halle when she needed all the help she could get to shut the haters up. One, they could’ve made her hair redder. It was basically orange brownish. Two, I’m disappointed they didn’t go all out with the outfits. One of the reasons I loved the Aladdin remake was for giving Princess Jasmine not one, but at least 9 new different outfits to wear compared to the one blue outfit we all know and love. Nobody had an issue with that change in the movie. It was welcomed, as long as Jasmine wore the blue outfit during A Whole New World, there wouldn’t be no major backlash for all these changes. All of her outfits were so colorful and vibrant and fit perfectly with every scene in the movie. Cinderella, Belle, and Jasmine all got a new wedding dress to wear towards the end of the movie that wasn’t in the animated ones and they all looked so beautiful. Halle deserved better! They should’ve just made the dress more pink. Also they should’ve included a wedding scene of them getting married and the final shot be them kissing with fireworks in the background. I swear that a different director would’ve made this movie better 😭 Guy Ritchie understood what made Aladdin a beloved movie. There’s a reason it made a billion and got positive reviews from the fans, critics not so much cause you can’t replicate the magic from animated to live action. I am hopeful for the Hercules remake, since Disney hired him to direct that movie.

Of course it looks different from the animated version. This is a live action movie aimed at adults, not kids. So the crab is gonna look like a crab. The fish is gonna look like a fish. But they still talk. And Ariel's hair is still red, it's just more natural instead of the vibrant tone from the animation. Furthermore, Scuttle is portrayed as a female northern gannet diving bird (not a male seagull) because they are able to breathe underwater for a short period of time. Ursula's look and behaviour in the animated film was inspired by an American drag queen called Divine. To prepare for her role as Ursula, Melissa McCarthy actually consulted with the drag queen community. One fun little detail is when Ursula is creating the potion to become Vanessa and the main ingredient is a bottle shaped like a human stomach. This is a play on the phrase "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach". Many people miss the fact that Ursula and Triton are siblings in this version. Triton had banished Ursula from his kingdom and disowned her for practicing black magic, which is what motivates her actions. It was cut from the animation but was included in the 2007 Broadway musical. Ariel and her sisters have the same mum but they represent the seven seas which is why each of them are a different race. Regarding the opening quote: Throughout the film Ariel cannot produce tears, even when she's sad and/or crying, UNTIL she becomes a human. Scuttle's "Has Ariel killed the prince yet?" is most likely referencing the original fairy tale, in which the nameless mermaid is destined to turn into sea foam and die after the prince marries another woman. The mermaid's sisters tell her that the only way she can escape this fate is if she kills the prince with an enchanted dagger. However, the mermaid can't go through with it and instead accepts her death. Ariel 'signed' the contract by giving Ursula a scale from her mermaid tail, which actually covers up a plot hole from the animation where she literally signs it with a quill pen. Since she could clearly read and write English, why didn't she just explain herself by writing it down? There's a big chance Eric wouldn't have believed her but it's worth a try right?I Ariel is given 3 days to kiss Eric and make him fall in love with her so she can remain human permanently. Ursula cheats 3 times to keep Ariel from being able to do just that. First, she secretly puts a memory spell on Ariel so she won't remember she needs Eric's kiss to stay human, and every time she is reminded she forgets immediately or falls asleep (that wasn't in the animation). Second, she sends her pet eels to prevent Ariel and Eric from kissing at the end of Kiss the Girl. Finally, she transforms herself into a human with Ariel's voice to trick Eric into marrying her. They changed the dingelhopper scene to include Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in the animation. She is the lady who gives Ariel the dinglehopper in the market. It's a symbolism of her passing the torch to Halle. Regarding the colours in the sea, someone said it's supposed to look all dark and gloomy from Ariel's perspective because that's how she sees it, which honestly makes sense. I loved the way Eric points out the star constellations to Ariel (which as a sailor he knows well) and starts guessing her name. It was such a beautiful improvement from the animated version where Sebastian just whispered her name to Eric. It added so much depth and charm to the scene. I like that Eric's character arch is more than just being the prince Ariel falls in love with. He has a backstory and a family. He, like Ariel, has a parent who believes they know what is best for their child. Eric being adopted is supposed to highlight the fact that he feels like he doesn't belong. Much like Ariel, he feels there is so much more to explore and discover, only the other way around. They share a bond over their love for collecting treasures. I really like how they fleshed out their romance more and actually showed they had a connection, instead of just 'love at first sight' and physical attraction. It also helped a lot that Halle and Jonah had an insane amount of chemistry. They also made it a lot clearer in this version that Ariel didn't want to become a human just for Eric. She was already interested and curious of life on land BEFORE she met him. Her motivations were rooted in her not fitting in and wanting to explore. She would have gone up one way or another, she just happened to have met Eric along the way. I think that’s why they added the bit about her not remembering to kiss Eric. They didn’t want the whole premise of her giving up her voice to be about chasing a guy, rather, about her chasing her dreams. Triton destroying her belongings was always the catalyst for her going to Ursula, not Eric in itself. They still kept the romance, it didn't take anything away from it. Some people have a problem with Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric as if it takes anything away from his character. He literally saved Ariel's life when Ursula was about to kill her by throwing the harpoon. He also saved Max. Ariel may have given him a little nudge but he was almost there anyways. And even so, it still speaks to Eric's character. Just like he didn't save Ariel in exhange for her saving him. He saved her because he loved her, and more importantly because he's a decent person. Ursula trying to kill Eric made so much more sense because she didn't care about Eric, it was about hurting Ariel. I wasn't sure about Javier Bardem's portrayal of King Triton at first, but the more I think about it the more I like it. In the animation he clearly had some anger issues, and while that is understandable, he doesn't have to be all screaming and intimidating to have an impact. He looks and sounds more disappointed and scared here rather than angry, which is not only a lot more respectable but also a lot more believable. He feels more like a worried father than just some big scary dude with an anger management problem. As for the acting as a whole, Halle and Melissa clearly stood out, but Jonah, Daveed, Jacob, Awkwafina and even Javier did a great job as well. Also, Jessica Alexander as Vanessa absolutely stole the 5 minutes she was on screen. As for the music, I think Halle absolutely nailed Part Of Your World. She has such an innocent and naive quality to her voice yet powerful at the same time. The power in that high note in the reprise is incredible. I love Melissa's version of Poor Unfortunate Souls. There is so much sass and character in her voice. The fact that Melissa had little to no singing experience and didn't even know she could sing is INSANE. Under The Sea translates surprisingly well to live action. Daveed Diggs adds his own flavour to it and Halle's little adlibs add so much to the song. Kiss The Girl is just magical, musically and visually. I love Wild Uncharted Waters and how it has her siren song behind it. Jonah has an amazing voice and you can hear he has a theatre backround. Also, this is random but I love how you can hear his strong English accent in every single word. For The First Time is great and allows Halle to be more playful yet vulnerable. I was appalled when I first heard Scuttlebutt, but it has grown on me and now I actually kinda like it. And while some people didn't like the ending scene with Triton, Ariel's sisters and all the other merpeople, I loved it. Yeah we didn't really see Ariel interacting with any of them besides her family, but neither did we in the animation and I still felt emotional seeing them at the end. It was kind of showing how their two worlds were forever united with their marriage. There are only really two things I have a problem with in the whole movie: The lack of Flounder and lack of Ariel's wardrobe. I didn't have any problem with the way Flounder looked, I just felt like he was absolutely useless in the movie. He barely had any lines and wasn't even on screen that much. I needed more of him. And, obviously, they could've dressed Halle in a potato bag and she still would've looked gorgeous. But Ariel's wardrobe on land felt lackluster. She wore the same blue dress the entire time! Even the dress at the end during the wedding was the same one, only in pink. What about the blue dress with the bow? Or the sparkling purple dress? The wedding dress? Why not bring them to life and just modernise them a bit? I don't feel that their reunion at the end was underwhelming like some people do. If anything, I like how simple it was and that they didn't speak. They communicated enough with their faces. At the end of the day, this is a movie about a mermaid turning into a human and fish that can talk. Not everything has to make sense. The thing is, there are some people who will never be satisfied because it will never be as good as the animated version. You can still enjoy and appreciate this movie for what it is.

@eternityriley1833 8 месяцев назад
@@ballerinafromtheblockImo I thought it was pretty obvious tho. When we'd learned that Ariel would kill Ursula instead of Eric before the movie came out, as soon as I saw the scene you're talking about I knew that that was how Ariel would get the idea to spin the wheel later as Eric did in the animated version to kill her. I feel like they made it kinda clear with how they had a close up, intense shot on Ariel's eyes/face then went straight to her seeing Eric do the big tug on the wheel, the camera zooming in & everything on him as he evaded something, showing where she learned how to do it for later in the movie. Just another example of both Ariel & Eric teaching each other things directly & indirectly throughout the film. Just my thoughts tho
@growingupwithdisney
@growingupwithdisney 8 месяцев назад
@@eternityriley1833 I did notice that shot, but it basically looked like the original when cartoon Ariel was watching, so I thought it didn’t mean much, but I guess you guys are right. @eternityriley1833
@eternityriley1833 8 месяцев назад
@@growingupwithdisney Well, I feel like since Ursula didn't/couldn't see where Ariel went in the dark whirlpooling waters, Eric served as a distraction the same way cartoon Ariel did before. Because from what we saw, Ursula was unaware of her presence after she & Eric got split up. But from my perspective, I like that Ariel solves the problems she created and cleans up her own mess. Like fighting earlier to get her voice back instead of her animal friends doing it for her & defeating Ursula (who killed her father & tried to kill her) using her cleverness & quickness on her feet that we witnessed in the beginning with the shark/mirror problem solving as well as something she learned from Eric (they both teach each other things throughout the film). Ursula is specifically Ariel's enemy (in the book it explains she was the reason her mother was killed) she killed her father, manipulated & tricked her from the start, has her father's trident and will take over the ocean if not the world with its power, and that's all of Ariel's doing...Eric just decided to get involved bc he loved Ariel and wanted to support/protect her. But she didn't have time to explain who Ursula was or what she did, like he literally doesn't know her at all. So, I appreciate Ariel being responsible for the problems and hurt she took part in, even if unwittingly. Plus, in the way the scene unfolds in this version it makes sense that Ariel and not Eric would maneuver better in the water to make herself useful in a battle versus Eric. No matter how great of a swimmer he is, she will always be quicker, more efficient, agile & also won't drown in a water/ocean fight sequence or scenario. She's literally in her element (no pun intended). If it was a land fight & Ariel was a mermaid I'd expect Eric to be of better use in a fight there, equally.

this version is a little odd because I don't think halle's ariel claims to love eric really. correct me if im wrong, but the scene where triton destroys ariel's little treasures is much more dramatic and emotional for the audience is because she's like crying, screaming 'daddy, i love him!' and she sobs with her whole body when it's over. it's still childish, cause she literally just met him and barely, but in this version, she is more so defending his goodness.. human goodness, because they've given triton a reason to despise them. i don't remember her proclaiming her love. they make a point to emphasize her curiosity with humanness and less of an obsession with eric. that's probably why they added in the point of her forgetting 'true love's kiss' .. it would derail that bit of extra character they wanted to give her by forcing her to be more proactive and make romantic love her main objective. Also ig they wanted to give eric some extra character and a whole song but i feel kind of meh about him. love the vid as usual, im so happy to watch whenever you post. see you next time 👋🏿😁👋🏿

I love how Ariel just blurted out that she loves Eric to Triton in the animated version, noting in the animated version she's still a young adult by the definition of the time period she's living in, which make the declaration stays in character for her, seeing all she had done for the things she love up until that point, I don't think reasoning with Triton is really in character for Ariel. That to me isn't really adding any layers to Ariel as a character to be honest.
@sashav.3189
@sashav.3189 7 месяцев назад
The funny thing is, Ariel saying daddy I love him, when he’s literally never talked to her and never overheard him. It was all just lust, this story organically shows their blossoming love, in this version Eric really pursues her and even sacrificed his life for her at the end, letting her able to kill Ursula. Everytime Ariel wanted something Eric gave it to her. This version is levels above the animation. As a kid I’d love the animation more probably but as a teenager and adult I’d love the live action more and I’m glad we have both
@clairelin0216
@clairelin0216 7 месяцев назад
@@sashav.3189 But then again, she's only 16, that's a young adult in the early 19th century, what she said is fitting for her age. And romantic love can happen for young kids, in certain time periods and certain countries, people are being brought up in ways that gave them little to no choice than to grow up at age 10 and being able to take care of others younger than them in their households, we don't always have to think about young love as lust, that's just a generalization, I don't know why y'all people see young love and immediately jumped into conclusion that it's lust but that's not the case for a lot of young love shown in animation and not what was shown in the 1989 animation, in the 1989 animation, while Ariel did said that she loved Eric, had you ever considered that she was expected to mature at her age and how Triton had no problem with her being in love when she's 16? Contexts are important in terms of understanding the story, and in the case of Ariel's story, you don't get that extra 2 years to mature because you're considered as an adult by 16 while you can still tend to be impulsive at age 16 because that's the nature of development, but that has nothing to do with her knowledge of love, she can actually be in love at age 16 or even younger and it doesn't matter because everyone can fall in love when they're young, that doesn't mean the young love is all about lust.

Arielle joining in in Under the Sea is just a bad choice storytelling wise. When a character joins in like that it transports an agreement or understanding of that character for what the other chatacter is saying in their song. In this instance however they should make it clear that she does not agree with Sebastian (but also os not opposing him, hence why she still enjoys the whole thing. It's still her home). It made it very confusing why she would just disappear at the end of the song. there is just this ambivalence between what is shown and what is actually going on in Arielle.

I can understand this argument. I made a comment about her disappearing at the end, but I ended up cutting it out of the video: I thought they should’ve made her disappear halfway through the song instead of at the end, so that it would’ve made more sense that she didn’t care to listen to Sebastian lol

10:13 This was actually one of my favourite changes. The live action changed things to show that Ariel doesn't hate living under the sea but rather wants to see what's above. There are subtle small changes to her story that I think impact the story in a greater way. For starters, she doesn't come off as miserable and someone who hates where she is. Her singing in Under The Sea shows that she understands the beauty around her and that she does appreciate life there. But it's still not enough. I also like the fact that her interest in Eric isn't quite love yet. She doesn't claim to love him in the grotto when her father confronts her like the cartoon. I think she's more interested in him and drawn to him more so than, "Oh I love this stranger." Halle perfectly captured the essence of Ariel and the live action showed her naivete.

2:52 Foreshadowing Ariel blowing through the shell horn. And Ariel is 18 in this film. So that makes Eric only three years older than her. Maybe the reason she came to the conclusion that he was kind and compassionate was because she saw him risk his life to save his lovable dog on a burning ship. 14:34 I know right! I always thought, "Why would destroying her treasures make her want to listen to you MORE? That's just gonna make her despise you even more! Now she REALLY won't respect you, cause you destroyed all her things!" And then he acts all surprised that Ariel made a deal with an evil seawitch. And not only that, Triton didn't tell his other daughters that he destroyed Ariel's treasures. 15:27 That's why when I watched "Pirates of the Carribbean" and the guy whom Elizabeth is betrothed to tells her, "I've been watching you since you were a child," I was horrified and my response was, "Ew! Don't tell her that! That's just creepy!" Sounds like a creeper to me.

Something about Ariel in the original animated, and which they emphasized even more in the live action, and which somehow many people still don't seem to understand, is that she was in love with the human world far before she ever met prince Eric. So many people trivialize her as some love-sick teenager giving up her life for some dude she just met. But that is not the point of her at all! I like what they did in this film, to show how Eric is just as enamored with the sea- before meeting Ariel- as Ariel is with the surface world- before meeting Eric. They were already so taken with each other's worlds, before meeting each other. That is what drew them together- a shared enthusiasm. It makes their attraction more believable, and also makes her rebellion against her father deeper than just some crush. It's Ursula that makes the spell all about some kiss and getting a man; that's her insinuation, not Ariel's wish. There are things I liked and disliked about this live-action film, but overall, I found it a worthy version, an enjoyable film. Halle was tremendous.

You've heard of "passing the torch to somebody"? Well, in this film, Jodi Benson passed the Dinglehopper on to Halle-Ariel.

I liked this one, the visuals especially the ocean shots are gorgeous and up there with Cinderella. But the story changes make the movie feel a bit stretched . Or maybe its just the editing a scenes go for too long. Maybe I just miss short runtimes.

No I kind of had the same thought because when I first saw that the runtime was 2 hr+, I was like what MORE did they add LOOOOL. Bring back 1.5 hour long movies 😩

It’s just because people doesn’t like change and some of them are really racist. They think black mermaid should not be there but the little kids are you so excited they can see them self you know I don’t know I love change. I love this movie and yeah.
