Could you sew the elastic before you complete the sleeves? Great video ❤
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I thought about doing that, but I was worried doing the hem after the elastic would be weird. It would be worth a try, though!
@rmorine6394

I just pulled up the video again because I'm on this step. The way I interpret the instructions, I think it does call for doing the elastic and then flat installing and hemming the sleeve. I could be wrong...😊 Either way, Whitney, your detailed instructions for the elastic and the neckline are sooo helpful! Thank you.

Could you do the ruching before sewing the sleeve side seam? It seems hard to do afterwards? Thanks for the video! Both dresses are just gorgeous!
@TomKatStitchery

I thought about doing it that way, but was worried hemming would be difficult afterwards. You could definitely try it, though!

Much easier to do ruching first then do up the seam.@@TomKatStitchery

Absolutely beautiful. Where can I purchase that cute bias tape?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! The bias tape for the green dress was made from some cotton lawn scraps I had leftover from a dress. The bias tape in the orange dress came from The Specky Seamstress: thespeckyseamstress.com/product-category/bias-binding/

I was also wondering if it would actually be easier to ruch first before constructing sleeve

I would do this

I was thinking the same thing. The elastic is above the hem allowance, so it shouldn't interfere with hemming the sleeves.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I thought about it, but was worried it would make hemming the sleeve weird after the fact. It would definitely be worth a try, though!

Great tutorial. I think I have to make this dress. It is so cute. I like to cut a longer piece of elastic than I need so I have some to hold on to when I get to the end. I mark the elastic at the desired length, sew and then cut the end of the elastic off when I am done.

Neat trick with the bias tape at the neck! I’ve never seen that before. I love learning new sewing tips, even after all these years. I’m currently knitting the Deliciosa sweater in wool yarn almost the exact color as your ponte dress.

Your Auroras are both so attractive on you, Whitney! Isn’t it amazing how much of a part fabric plays in the way a garment presents itself? Thanks for the tutorial on the neckline bias tape - in the long run, it will serve the dress well by using a woven bias tape. This one is definitely going in my Spring capsule (love it with the sneakers!) 😊

Great makes, love them both! How did you do your swayback adjustment on the pattern? I have to do that with waistbands but I’ve not done it on a bodice.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I took a 1/2" wedge out of center back going to nothing at the side seam. It makes the back fold line a bit curved, but I just straightened it back out after I did the adjustment!

Love the green one with the boots. It also reminded me...As another full busted person, what is your thought on princess line seams to the shoulder versus princess line seam to the armhole versus darts?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I think princess seams can be easier to fit and tweak on a larger bust (you don't get all the excess dart bulk), but I use them all pretty interchangeably. I don't know that I vastly prefer one over the other.

Whitney-Happy Belated Birthday. I really liked this pattern when I saw it yesterday; especially since it doesn't have a waist seam (I'm short-waisted too). But what I'm really excited about it that you've finally used the Papilio Ponte that I told you about! Now you can tell me if you think the greatest stretch is across the fabric or up & down along the selvage, & how much stretch you think it has. Remember I made the Elle pants out of this & they were too tight because during the fitting class I had made them out of Arieta Ponte which is stretchier. I've been waiting to see what you think about this Papilio Ponte. I really wish you would do a tutorial video on how stretch effects a garment's fit & how to take that into consideration before we cut out a pattern. I know some patterns will suggest a certain amount of stretch but if the pattern doesn't even if I know the fabric has X% stretch I'm not sure what to do with that. Hopefully, you can fit that in somewhere in your busy schedule. Thanks, linda
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
Linda, you were right about this fabric. I love it! It has really nice structure to it. I can definitely talk more about stretch in our fabrics in the future. However, I am wondering if the issue with your pants might have more to do with this fabric being thicker than the Arieta and that's why they felt tighter . . . While stretch obviously plays a role in how a finished garment fits, unless the two fabrics are drastically different, it shouldn't make that big of a difference. I'm thinking on this one!
@lindacrusco-stebbins9187
@lindacrusco-stebbins9187 7 месяцев назад
OK Whitney - I'll await your answer because I not only bought more of this to make another pair of pants that fit but I also want to use the pants that didn't fit to make some kind of top. As always, I will stay tuned.TU

Hi Whitney! Great video. This looks like a fun dress to sew and wear! Do you mind sharing a link to the clear elastic you use. I have found out the hard way that not all clear elastic is created equally. I appreciate both tutorials in this video. I have done rushing before but I was honestly winging it. Did you do anything to stabilize the shoulders on the dress? Thanks and have a great week.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I get my clear elastic from Wawak: www.wawak.com/garment-construction/elastic-waistbands/swimwear/plastic-swimwear-elastic/#sku=el400cl . As far as the shoulder seams, I do iron in a strip of woven stay tape on my back shoulder seams to keep those from stretching out over time.

I’m thinking the elastic shirring could be done while it’s still on the flat. It shouldn’t affect the sleeve hem or seam that much. Much easier than sewing into the tube.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I thought about doing it that way, but was worried hemming would be difficult. It would be worth a try, though!

I think you could. I debated doing it that way, but was afraid it would make hemming difficult. It would be worth a try!
