@Motorhead289 It may not seem possible, but the radar sensing technology scans way far in advance to detect such potential hazards. and it's even more amazing how it applies the brakes, activates the hazards, flashes the highbeams, and sounds the horn to warn the drivers behind and to the side of the driver. it's simply amazing and THIS is a vehicle worth investing in.
@86Vili86 But, In theory, the full braking is applied given that the driven is completely unaware and/or does not take any preventive actions. Let's say the driver is incapable of driving the truck anymore, the truck has come to a complete stop. it will not brake fully if there is any driver input.
@xyloman321 Truck is air braked, the air brakes use air to keep the brakes off. Break the air line or air brakes and the system vents to atmospheric pressure, and the brakes apply withouth the driver doing anything. I've seen air brakes fail to apply, but that was due to the air diaphram being caked in dust not allowing it to vent air and thus not allowing the brakes to work. Badly warn brake pistons can cause the air brakes to fail to apply
The stop program must have two options, first if the car is moving the stop system must reduce the velocity to equal to velocity car. Second; if the car is static the procedure correct is a hard stop. It is very risk if the car is moving and the stop system is hard an accident may occur.
@anshumanabhisek I do not know where you're from but in Germany it is so that the brakes on a 40-ton trucks are rated for 80 tons and have to be. From a purely physical standpoint, it would vote on, more weight = more braking distance, but that's not quite true because there is the friction and the higher is, the faster the truck is at a screeching halt.
Noticed that the truck comes to a complete stop, rather than reduce speed to the same as the vehicle in front of it.. What happens to the guy behind the Mercedes without the brake system?? He will just pile into the back of the Mercedes truck??
@diggingforgold i suppose its early days as well for the testing of the new technology, so maybe in the future they would react to different situations like you stated
The driver of the truck does not push the break at all. The system makes a warning the driven is not acting and the system activates the breaks and then the horn and flashes the head lights and turns on the hazard lights on. In case if the driver falls asleep!!!
@wsp1985 the truck driver wont be culped!! you are supposed to mantain certain distance from the car in front of you, and your car braking system is supposed to be in well condition as well as your tires... the system activates to avoid the truck to smash the car... but if someone else hits the truck, that's out of trucker's hands...
That's cool how they r putting that same technology in they're big rigs. For example say the driver is distracted the truck automaticly detects and stops safely. I think it wouldn't hurt to have that truck or technology like that in big rigs here, that is if its not already.
@diggingforgold well fortunately drivers are intelligent and leave sufficient reaction room between them and the 14+ tons of truck in front of them so in case the truck does stop like that, the cars behind will be able to stop or maneuvre.
But how about having the vehicle stationary?? Is there enough distance to stop a fully loaded truck from hitting the car? I think it would of been interesting to see that scenario !
@vectorm1299 I agree with your first 2 comments but your last comment i don't,there are 2 types of air brakes(1 the old wedge brake)that the brake is applied with the use of air pressure(2 the brake is applied due to lack of air pressure....i,e 24-30 or the 30-30 coupled with break away valves,where as the brakes you decribed (wegde) will release due to lack of pressure(dust,perforated diaphram(pancake)don't unhook your truck on a hill with WEDGES they will not be there in the MORNING.
I'm impressed no doubt, but the truck just comes to a dead stop every time? Bit dangerous if it's on a motorway, isn't it..?! Cool stuff tho, wish my car stopped that fast..
I don't think the truck should come to a halt after the emergency braking if it detect the car infront is moving. That's not safe at all.. What happened to the cars/truck tailgating the yellow truck.
This is pretty cool, but if the trucks carrying 40'000 pounds of whatever, there's still going to be a mess, because at that rate of deceleration all that frieght is coming straight through the cab area.I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad safety idea, but this situation could easily end very bad for the truck driver
Great development! However, I do see a problem: what happens with the vehicles following the truck? The accident is guaranteed, and then it will not be the fault of the driver at the front, but the truck driver's fault. This system seems to transfer the consequences to the truck.
Pretty neat, yet not so safe as fuzzo73 pointed out, do it with full load, and knowing truckers, throw in some extra. And to make things worse, at least where I am, truckers seem to ignore 80km/h speed limit set to them, instead they drive like mad man between 100 - 110 km/h causing havoc on their path as seen so many times. And what about log trucks that run here contantly... I can only imagine how the logs push through the cabin and continue their path hitting / killing anything on their path.

Great so this will reinforces to truck drivers that it is now ok to be on your mobile while driving or reading the paper. I love technology and this is clearly progress but the more you take responsibility away from the driver they more they rely on the technology instead of skill. At least it may stop them tailgating as they will not be able to get that close
What would be great is if Benz cars can interact with each other so that the Benz truck can say 'F*ck you dumbass' to the c-class. That would be Hi-tech
ALRIGHT.. dangerous for the cars in the back.. the truck should decelerate down to the same speed of the car in front NOT to 0! I'm sure they could figure that one out!! but so far good job

If I had this feature I would crash.. Cause when im racing i get close to cars goin pretty fast and then take gaps, the car would think ima hit em and slam the brakes, when in reality I have full control of the situation... Anyone understand me?
Warning!! The ABA will only react, when the Car or other Vehicle in Front of the ABA-Truck is moving!! When this car in this Movie will be parking, ABA can't find this barrier, and does NOT brake the Truck -> CRASH!!!! But the newest ABA-Generation will find non-moving barrier and make Brake-reaction... (sorry for my Horror English)
Are there any truck drivers in the UK? With a mercedes truck 16 tons or over bought after 2008 that would like to participate in a paid customer satisfaction review?
I think that the idea was good, but it is a bit stupid... this full stop is only good if the car is standing...iww woudl greatly reduce the impact force, but with a rolling car it is just making the brakes hotter... so it is pretty bad... actually
lol, this is a beta testing? in real life situation there is also someone driving behind the actros.. Why brake untill standing still. it is possible to measure the car's speed in front in combination with adaptive cruise control
