i think it's more about it being a pointless release, it's not a bad system at all but it's just kind of confusing why they would sell this out of nowhere. i personally think that if you're upgrading from an old 3ds/2ds that this is better in every way, especially because every 3ds (xl) and new 3ds (xl) go for an insanely high amount nowadays even when they're used (at least in europe). the 2ds xl has the same issue but with some luck you can find one for under 100 bucks
uh , I must warn you , I had a lot of problems with mine . I bought it used a while ago , and I was younger etc but rn the hinge has visible cracks going all the way to the bottom screen and the left shoulder button ( L ) is broken . the design of the console makes it impossible to repair the shoulder button because it is directly stuck on the mother board . I literally bought a new 3ds because of this lol … so yea be kind with your handheld , my had its life but for now it will rest in its case .
One thing that's really noticeable about the New 2DS XL: every part except for the top screen is on the lower half. The speakers, the volume slider, and the cameras were all moved down to the bottom half. I am almost certain they did this to reduce assembly and repair costs.
I hated that the speakers were on the bottom of that model. If you cranked the volume up while playing then it would vibrate the system in your hands anytime sound was going through the speakers. It was like having crappy constant rumble that could only be shut off by having no sound or relying on headphones/earbuds.
i mean the standard new 3ds xl would just vibrate the top screen and was really noticible if you had your fingers on the L and R buttons but yeahhh the fact that big hands would block the speakers entirely was lame
@life09m yeah that's just it, I legit started playing games holding the system awkwardly as to not block the speakers, I've upgraded to the new 3ds xl now and I still find myself doing that again out of habit even though i don't need to anymore LOL
That's why they made so many special editions; they're all in the upper half. Also, never noticed that shake in mine. Granted, I usually play it in mute.
To be fair, you saved money on one other thing: the charger. The New 3DS didn't include a charger because it assumed everyone had one from the 3DS. The new 2DS came with a charger in the box so not only did you save $50 not getting 3D, but you had a $15-$20 charger included. That's a great deal
@@adora_was_takenThey're only using standardised ports because of EU regulation, otherwise they'd still use their funky proprietary port that only iphones used (and a few apple laptop accessories, I guess). As for the charging cable, I always found that weird to include. Especially since USB-C plugs were not much of a thing back then, and are still fairly uncommon now.
Same here. I sat out the entire life of the 3DS generation until it was at its end at which point I bought a refurbished New 2DS XL from Nintendo’s online store for $90. Now I can play all the games I missed, and that’s exactly what I’ve used it for the last few years. A lot of people must’ve realized what they missed given the prices for these things online now.
@@Mofunendo Bottom of the system, i ordered a used one a few days ago so i haven't experienced it yet since it still needs to come but i doubt its going to be a problem unless you have the hands of an absolute giant
@@SpaghettiTheEddie I really just don’t play with the sound on honestly. I play a lot of pokemon on it these days, and I don’t need to hear that music for the 1 millionth time
I'll give the 2ds xl this, the micro Sd card being easily accessible under the gamecard slot is a godsend when it comes to jailbreaking compared to the tedium of removing the back plate of the other new 3ds models every time you need to access the sd card.
Buying the 2DS XL used, outside of the US, makes a whole lot of sense. Used "New 3DS XL" prices are insane, they go for more than an OLED Switch. So for half (or less) the price of a "New 3DS XL", you can get a "New 2DS XL", with all the hardware improvements, and play the entire 3DS library on original hardware.
@@mackclodfelter7220 Sure, but that's a gimmick for the most part anyway, even with the improved tracking on the New 3DS model. Most people seem to agree, and turn it off most of the time. I'm ok with saving $150+ and not having that "feature".
Other than the constantly exposed front-facing camera, it’s definitely the sleekest designed, they really nailed it the design with this one, moving all the components & cameras to the bottom makes it much nicer to hold, having the SD card more easily accessible is nice too, the dust cover is a no-brainer, I wish the 3ds had this design I do hate the glassy top screen though, I can’t touch it anywhere without getting finger-prints on it, so I always have to hold it by the very top of the screen to open-close it
Scott… the cartridge flap is the best thing about the 2DS. Not accidentally pressing it, and it not falling out, and no dust aswell is amazing. The switch even had it.
How often do you accidentally press on the cartridge slot so hard it ejects? I can’t say I’ve ever had that issue in my 10 years of playing my 3ds. Not to mention having a cart in the slot prevents dust from getting in as well. The dust flap is just an extra annoyance when changing games
I'm surprised no one mentions this, but I specifically chose this model over the new 3DS XL because of the lighter weight. I often play in bed where I hold it over my head. With this model, I got more play time before my hands went numb and it fell on my face. Plus, in addition to being cheaper, it came with a charger.
Had 3ds xl and bought a new 2ds for the same reason, it’s lightweight compared to the 3ds xl, makes it more comfortable to hold, and the unique pokeball special edition purchase was worth it
@@ScubaLuigi oh I know, happens to me every now and then with my phone it was just the mental image of it being a constant thing that was amusing to me
I hate the "New" part being officially in the title, it makes buying an unopened one even harder than it already is with people not listing them correctly. At least 90% of ebay posts are false.
You aren’t wrong. Never had a 3ds and recently thought about snagging one. Instantly overwhelmed with the amount of models that exist. Reminiscent of the Xbox one x/s models that surged in sales when the Series models launched.
none of the 'New' 3DS/2DS consoles even came sealed so in reality you will never be buying a brand new 'New' 3ds unless its the older ones since those came sealed
The new 2DS XL purpose was to use all the unused components in a cheap console that is not as ugly as the 2DS to sell out the stock of "new" CPU at a discount.
New 2DS XL was my first console. I'm not a kid, I just didn't have a console as a kid. It was the only console I could afford with my mid teens money that I saved up my pocket money to buy. I got Nintendo Switch later with actual earned money from a job.
Everybody was shiting on the switch because it had a 720p screen, the dock did not upscale to 4k and the performance of the console was weak. So, nintendo listened and hoped it worked while continuing to bank on the 3DS.
Power, yeah. Performance, on the other hand, was one of the best things about both consoles. My biggest criticism about the Switch is how if I want a solid action title, I have too look earlier in the systems life. Even games made with the Switch in mind can suffer from framerate drops and lag, which is a dealbreaker for some genres. It's why the joke about us mostly getting farming sims and RPG's holds some truth; they're genres where performance isn't as important. I could care less about the graphics of the switch successor. I just hope that it's able to run most games without having to worry about compromises in performance.
@@batmanbud2 As much as I hate the company, I'm not afraid to give credit where credit is due. You don't need power to make good games. Indies proved that too, but still.
An entire Scott's Stash vid bashing my favorite model of the 3DS/2DS line 😭 I'm planning to buy one when I get enough money, not due to it being cheaper, but because I remember this was genuinely my favorite of the models, I loved how lightweight it was and I love the cartridge flap that you can't press by accident and I love that the SD card is accessible for many purposes and I love the lines you can scratch and the buttons and the screen (I never even made the iPhone connection, I just thought it was slick) Excellent video though, you make solid points, a lot of my love for this is pure nostalgia factor since it was the last of the 3DS/2DS line that I owned
This is my definitive 3ds model. The one I’ve modded and use regularly. All the other ones I have I keep clean and stored away, but my new 2ds xl is my daily driver.
I bought one of the last refurbished models for this by Nintendo back in 2021 for $90. After homebrewing I have over 150 games downloaded on it. Easily the greatest bang for my buck gaming system I’ve ever bought
The camera placement is definitely for cost reasons. They're directly attached to the board, and only the top screen is a separate part. With a camera on the top it has to be a separate daughter board which would cost extra.
I know there's opinions about this model, but when Nintendo announced that they would stop producing 3DS units in 2020, I bought mine immediately before prices could rise (cause my original 3DS needed replacing), and the New 2DS XL was the cheapest in terms of bang for buck. And I love mine, I still use it on a weekly basis.
the new 2ds xl is my dream 3ds console, I've spent so long looking for one about $100, i will find it one of these days, my original 2ds and original 3ds are so outdated now
I had an original 3DS. It was fine. I sold it when I got a new 2DS XL which felt like an upgrade. I barely use it since recently getting the new 3DS XL which feels like a premium system. It also has a top IPS screen. It’s my favourite way to play 3DS.
I absolutely LOVE the 3D effect of the New 3DS XL, but for some reason I have a big soft spot for the New 2DS XL. Its design is cute, it's a bit more compact, it has the new controls... I got the Pokéball model and its so stupidly satisfying to look at and fidget with. The Pokéball button clicks!
One of the things about the 2DSXL is that it has by far the worst LCD screens of the entire 3DS lineup. Nintendo worked with many different LCD screen providers, some of which provided some decent to excellent quality panels for the different 3DS SKUs. But for the 2DSXL, Nintendo really went for the cheapest, nastiest screens imaginable. Pretty much the opposite of the fabled 3DSXL's IPS displays
Learning there was only a year between the 3DS XL and the 2DS is really surreal. It felt like a lifetime of fantastic games and multiplayer with my friends between the time I got my XL for Christmas and when the doorstop was first announced.
I loved my New 2DS XL but it definitely feels cheap to the touch. But when I was in high school working for $8/hr, it was the difference between getting it now versus saving for another few months for the New 3DS XL. And I wanted to play Pokemon Moon NOW, DAMMIT!
i love the new 2ds xl, to me it was a more stylish 3ds and i didnt mind losing 3d cuz i never used it (bonus amiibo functionality). plus, it was a 2ds that didnt suck to hold and play lol. i love you new 2ds xl, you will always be the peak 3ds system to me
I remember picking one up as I only had a base model 3DS and wanted to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (shut up) but New Nintendo 3DS and XLs were hard to find past 2016. Games using the 3D function were on their way out so it made sense to get a New 2DS XL. It's still my main 3DS to this day.
8:38 I actually do remember thinking it was a tweet by a parody account for a few seconds when I saw the Nintendo of America tweet announcing the New Nintendo 2DS XL on Twitter.
I still don't get what's wrong with the world. That 3D effect was mind-blowing to me the whole time I played on my old 3DS. It's like my eyes are built differently from everyone else's. Seeing the game in 3D space rather than on a 2D plane was the closest to AR/VR they could get without shooting for headsets. I wish I had the bad eyes so I could understand the concept not having taken over the world of technology into the 2020s
Most people can see the 3D just fine, and it does look very cool, but a huge part of gaming is the social aspect of it. It's really hard to properly show someone else the 3D. Virtual Boy suffered from the same problem. You can't show it in ads, you can't show it in online videos or streams, your friends can't see it from the side while they're watching you play, and so on. It becomes an effect that only one person can see at a time under very specific circumstances. And none of the games truly require it, because it can easily be turned off? All of the above is a recipe for the games getting remembered without 3D while the 3D effect is forgotten to time. The DS, Wii, and Switch are examples of gimmicks that are well remembered, just because the gimmick is very easy for everyone to see and experience together with you as you're playing.
I think the controls on the New 2DS XL feel better than on most 3DS systems. It's only behind the regular 2DS IMO. The buttons feel so much better to press than on 3DS/3DS XL/New 3DS/ New 3DS XL.
It annoys me how people are like: “DUH WHY DOESN’T THE BUTTON ON THE POKEBALL SPECIAL EDITION DO ANYTHING!?” Honey, it’s an aesthetic, also, I’d doubt Nintendo would go out of there way to code a specific function for a specific New 2DS XL special edition, that not that many units would be made.
For real, I like this one better because it is lighter, because I can't accidentally (or in a fit of fidgeting) turn on the 3D that hurts my eyes, the screen feels clearer and nicer without the 3D screen hiding under it, and the accessible SD card + hiding the cartridge (again, I fidget too much) are huge. I'm tiny and it's beautiful. My only disappointment is that they never did the copper conductors for a drop it and charge it base.
The regular n3ds is probably my favorite, I've got small hands so ergonomics isn't an issue, and it's the perfect size to fit in my pocket or purse. It also doesn't peel like the xl. Finally modded it earlier this year and I'm angry I didnt do it sooner.
Having never even held any of the 3DS models, I never thought my N2DSXL felt cheap, but price was fundamentally why I bought it (I got mine refurbished for $180CAD all in) and having jail-broken it, it's one of my favorite devices I own. Every time I pick it up I think of how mind-blowing it is to have gone from a chunky OG Gameboy in the late 90s to having literally every GB, NES and SNES game in my pocket, along with as many GBA, DS and 3DS games as I can handle, with a PS1 game or two thrown in for good measure. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and every 2D Zelda in my pocket is an absolute win all on its own.
There was an article I read before the launch of de 2ds XL, the thing is I can't find It anywhere anymore. What It said is that the agreement Nintendo had with Sharp to make 3d screens was coming to an end at the moment. If we take that as true, the existence of this revision makes a lot more sense, because that means that the 2ds XL wasn't made to coexist with the new 3ds models, it was made to replace them on the lasts years of the 3ds life, because the original 2ds wasn't compatible with the "new" 3ds software. I remember that all promotional material (Nintendo of Europe at least) dropped any reference to anything but the 2ds or 2ds XL fast, in games like the Mario and Luigi remakes and other 2017-2018 games.
i think it’s a pretty good model. my mother bought my little brother a 2DS XL back in 2017 and he never used it, and well now I’ve taken ownership of it to play my old DS and 3DS games. I completely love it. It has a big screen and I can swim in my nostalgia.
10:30 that's not everyone though. You can't just generalize everybody that gets hyped about anything as "fake hyping" because while yeah there's people that fake their feelings solely just for the attention, there's many people including people I personally know of, that get insanely hyped about awesome stuff and it's pretty genuine. At least to me. People getting genuinely hyped about the coolest and the most raw stuff always make my day and it's disingenuous to think that everyone fakes it because that's not the case.
@@thefloofguy I think you get my point 😅 Even RU-vidrs that aren't trying to completely get attention, they get hyped, but the hype is genuine because of whatever thing looking THAT awesome and mind-blowing. I'm a pretty hype person myself, I have and still go crazy over game announcements right now (not literally every single thing of course), but I still have the ability to judge things and see if they're completely good or not, without being mindless. Same thing with other RU-vidrs that know how to look at things in any media not just games.
@@diegoestrada4389 i do get your point, that's just not what he's saying. i don't mean to argue but i also don't want you to live thinking he's saying you're not allowed to be excited for things! to quote him "you would see so many people being over the moon excited for everything nintendo related, and hey, i don't have a problem with that." he just goes on to say that it's very noticeable when a youtuber is not just "getting excited", they're trying to manipulate their audience. like the other commenter said, the hype attracts the little kids to watch their vid. scott isn't saying "man i HATE IT when people get HYPED for things" he's saying it's not good to be disingenuous. i don't think that's generalizing anybody
I had a 3ds and a 3ds xl but i sold them and years later I got the new Nintendo 2ds xl after switch launched so it was nice getting a new console for cheap. The 3d effect i didnt like using anyway bc hurts my eyes
I remember picking a New 2DS XL up on a whim because at the time I rationalized "This it the last DS Product I'll ever have to buy." Was a cool sendoff to a decade-old form factor we'll likely never see again!
The microSD card right next to the game card slot is really good if you hack your 3DS and need to take it out multiple times. That's perhaps the main reason I dont want to switch to the New 3DS XL.
To be fair, there's an FTP homebrew app that mostly negates that problem, especially if you're transferring some smaller stuff like a few save files or some NDS roms. I only ever remove it so I can do the occasional SD card back-up faster.
