The new Dex is awful. It's basically just a different tablet or touchscreen setup. The POINT of Dex was that it mimics a PC interface. The new one is nothing like that.
Yeah, I don't like it at all. Especially now that it's the default option, it's going to dissuade people from using the actual good version of it. Which will give Samsung an excuse to completely stop supporting it in your devices which will probably happen someday
Classic DEX still the best. New Dex does not really bring that Desktop style working. If New Dex only mirrors when you connect to a TV/Monitor, then Classic Dex is still the best as it extends your desktop when you plugin to a TV/Monitor. Classic Dex is what makes me keep going back to Samsung flagship phones
I've tried both, and I actually prefer the new Dex. 1) New Dex enables you to have multiple slides of homescreen, just like a tablet does. I can separate different slide for different usage, thus making my work easier and quicker. The classic dex is a dekstop basically, so it only has 1 screen. Both have apps shortcuts, but in new dex I can put different categories of apps in different slides (eg: 1st slide for work, 2nd slide for entertainment, etc). It is very helpful to me. 2) Widgets. I haven't find a way to put widgets (or something similar) into classic dex homescreen. Not to mention that I need multiple widgets of the same app opened at all times (calendar to be precise). 3) More about widgets. I can't seem to have notes widgets in classic dex. Does anyone know how to do this? I am able to have notes opened at all times in my laptop, but I haven't found a way to do so in classic dex. Now, in new dex, I can put as many notes widgets as I want, noting that I have multiple slides of homescreen as I mentioned earlier. Also, not to mention that I don't think I can fit all my notes in classic dex screen. 4) Due to excessive usage, I sometimes got bored with pc/laptop ui. Tablet ui is refreshing. That's why I prefer new dex which boosts my productivity like how I use my pc, but with the ui of a tablet. I will try to work more with classic dex, if only the widgets options become available. Or perhaps someone knows the solution for my questions? :D
Thank you sir. A true Dex user review. Just watched another RU-vidr review it and it turned my stomach. I use mine as a semi desktop replacement and the new features messed with my remote connection app while in full screen mode.
I wish Samsung would let you choose to force some apps to always open in split view or windowed mode when you're not in dex. That would be a killer feature, apps like password managers or auth managers could use that.
Youd have to make a custom mode, in "the construct" that i use for recording,, i just set up a few if/whens, as well as integrating a bluetooth comms app that played nice with modes. I dont have the name here, my apologies. Modifying gui features in sec apps might not be worth the trouble though, with captive portals getting called and wutnot.
Classic DeX for me, all the way. I don't really mind the other changes so much, but not being able to hit Super + Left or Super + Right to snap windows is unacceptable to me. I use DeX mode to get work done like I'm using a traditional computer; window management and using the keyboard to quickly complete tasks is kind of the point... I'm glad they continue to work on DeX, because I find it very powerful, but this new version of DeX seems to remove essential features more than improves and iterates upon past implementations.
Unpopular opinion: I love the new Samsung Dex! Actually, I only use my tablet with the new Dex UI. For me, it is the perfect combination of a tablet and desktop environment. I hope they keep improving it.
New dex feels like it was thought out to be used with a touchscreen first, competing with stage mode from iPad, that’s why its not on smartphones, while old dex was kept to bring the desktop like interface. Samsung’s got lots to improve in this new dex, but it brings lots of new possibilities.
I'm selling my iPad and ordered a refurbished S8 Ultra, and one of the reasons was that stage manager was atrocious - it really couldn't mimic a laptop, it was just a tablet with a keyboard. So the idea of aiming to copy Stage Manager seems a really bad idea.
I actually like this new one, because the apps that recently opened are stay in the dock as recent. While dex is trying so hard to work like computer, the apps itself are literally mobile apps that shouldn’t be so “easy to close”. And the close button on top of each apps should just minimize it in the same sense as the home or back button in normal phones and tablets. And good for them for ditching all of the back buttons from everywhere
@@sparky6757 it was never meant to mimic a laptop though. Personally I have stage manager always on, I never turn it off. It’s just a better way to manage windows rather than the classic tablet way to do it. The good thing about stage manager is that it is very touch friendly, and if the new dex can provide a very touch friendly way of managing windows that is good, really good. As long as you have to option to swap between old and new.
@oh-noe Samsung's standard way to handle floating windows works better for me than Stage Manager ever did on account of the fact I can resize and move them freely rather than having arbitrary limits, and I can do traditional splits at the same time. If you have a good time with Stage Manager that's great, but the default One UI solution works better for me and DeX is a valuable option to have as an alternative.
I really wish Dex would allow you to open up two instanses of the same app. i.e. two calculators open at the same time. that was something I missed a lot when I was using Dex frequently.
lock the app in dex, and let your mouse run without borders, ie slide off the side of the screen. Its buggy enough you might getcgya two calcs lol. I have 6 browser windows open right now, but they tend to vanish into the either on me.
Actually just looking now on Reddit. There are several work around a for this. The easiest would be to use an app that lets you install more than 1 copy of an app. One called app cloner apparently. Or Samsung work spaces let's you do this.
Samsung should have made the new DeX the standard tablet mode without referring to it as DeX. The new DeX is simply not DeX and this is the reason for missing all additional settings available in Classic DeX. The only reason I can imagine for not having made it the default tablet mode could be restrictions imposed by Google.
I still do not understand why would they "fix" refresh rate so that it doesnt go past 60hz on dex. They have literally proved that it was possible for a few months before they took it away.
I was using Windows Subsystem for Android and one thing that I was like "why DeX doesn't have this?" when I discovered if you combine ALT/SHIFT/CTRL with the mouse wheel it does different axes, and that would be so useful in some games and apps that are made with touch input in mind. And there are so many little lacks of effort through the usabillity that I can't seem this being a actual Premium piece of OS. It should be called _DeX Beta_ since it's so underbaked.
You should be able to combine CTRL / SHIFT with mouse wheel. I have tested it with Samsung Internet app. If you find ways to improve Samsung DeX, please let me know.
The Simpsons is home-air not homer? Regarding home airtags. The DeX Samsung with Roku or something else with Bitcoin with airtags could be a type of schizophrenia technology making LFO radioactivity because of anything-speakers modifying them. Like, making a fake satellite program and faking WiFi and faking tons of recordings on devices or CDs. It could be a mental health trap when people are in a situation where it's turned up over time. Like, a low operator feedback build with long release with infinite sustain. Regarding how it, when gated or noise cancelled, would seemingly never be able to be turned off and while using be undetectable. As an LFO resonance it could make the technology groups using computers and phones have an LFO blowing through the devices, including speakers (like, without Bluetooth the devices are running the LFO resonance without being classified as 'on' or with the program). Like, the DeX could be a cute if it is used for legal work and for technology mental health good sciences but in essence it seems dangerous. Airtags and whether or not they would be able to reprogram them. Same with tap-payment cards and so forth... Like, it operates without an email nor with Bluetooth. Pi-board with it could be a conflict for home insurance. The DeX when it is like saying that people who were previous owners (/still current owners) could be active like a technology bomb (Metaphor for technology explosive like profiles. A fulcrum)... The DeX concept could have been different but maybe it's now a decision engine using mathematical reasoning (Elon Musk is Samsung secret agent? Germans and Koreans made a large union of allies and it's being exposed?)... Potentially the context of using DeX for stadiums and crowd control could be a network mapping of apps software for airtags insurance like a schizophrenic audio engineering radio technology for spatial relations. But, potentially it's like "when does the insurance example turning down the use and having social strategy for conflict resolution prior to engagement by peace accords and navigating the division for proper functioning", considering how it could schedule money and tickets... The profile of DeX could be like a satellite program with Xbox live Kinect (secret about Microsoft and USA trying to get cheaper technology with less in sales? Which may be an organization for extortion like blaming genocidal technology uses on others). Regarding why the simplest technologies seem to be the roots of social psychology communication barriers without emotional support, but rather a continuous unrivaled issues. For example, if it was used with DOL for claiming people as prisoners and requiring them to show up like it's a type of ankle monitorer technology, but the message is not accepted nor received directly, it would be a repeating disturbance. Despite potentially being like a prank requiring DOL to commit with DHS for conflict resolution; but, instead continues using it for stating that requesting repetitively is somehow the right answer. Then again, exampling social disability (more person now than ever before) could be the reasoning, like, everything is already over 150 years old with every conflict resolution in action for insurance like every product is pitch perfect but douchebags can still example fictional unresolved dispute conflicts.
One thing to note on new Dex. You mentioned you can't drag a window up to the top and have it go full screen, but I saw another video where they mentioned you can resize the top of the window up to the top of the screen and get it to go full screen.
I like this middle option of having the productivity and tavlet feel because I have the windows experience with my laptop and want the tablet for portable productivity and entertainment. I like that it is seemless to switch and I that we can still switch between the two options, but i am new to the samsung ecosystem and haven't used Dex too much, so this new one feels better and great combination of windows/tablet.
what I don't like with classic dex is that you can't use two finger trackpad gesture to move window or resize it like on one ui. this new dex is can and it's like a dream to me (still waiting thought to arive at tab s8 wifi)
At least DeX on both the tablet and external monitor, and the ability to move apps between them. I think this is coming because in the meantime you can leave DeX and most Apps just continue to run without a restart. SO Samsung is working on it.
I see the potential in New Dex, but like iPadOS Stage Manager, it feels disconnected from the DeX interface. Maybe if the new Dex and the classic Dex features could be combined, it would make a better operating system.
They should just call it productivity mode or something because it looks like it simply enables you to better work with many things at once not necessarily like a desktop.
the taskbar is the best thing they added to the folds really handy i use it all the time only thing i wish was they allow u to add more apps on it but u can with goodlock
The new DeX is just a tablet mode with pinned taskbar and all apps opened in multiwindow mode, it's not desktop version of android. I'm so sorry but I would say it's a failure for Samsung this time. I've tried to love the new Samsung DeX so many times and try to do my work with it but still Ican't feel the freedom of the Classic Samsung DeX so it keeps me back to the Classic DeX. If it's possible, please Samsung, just focus on improving the Classic DeX to the best. 😊
That's so much worse. Appears to me not just a downgrade, but maybe a hidden attempt to slowly kill DeX in favor of a tablet mode a little more versatile. That's not DeX. They killed the usage of a external monitor in favor of... mirroring? That's desktop? I used the platform since 2019 every day for work and personal use. I'm glad that I switched in 2023 to Motorola's Ready For. They're doing a much better job in desktop mode. The new wireless Moto Connect is great and so stable. Deserve a video!
I'm wondering,....while using my Galaxy Tablet s9 Ultra in DeX mode can I the install a program like Adobe Fresco (that DOES work as a Windows Desktop app) onto the tablet and run it while in DEX mode? It is not made for Android but again,..it IS a Windows program.
Dex must haves 1. multiple monitor support. 2. Forced Mouse and Keyboard use in apps. 3. Work and Personal account options that are different for each.
The new dex is very bad at real estate management. You are showing it on the gigantic s9 ultra so it is not noticeable but on my s9 plus (and more so on the s9), the new Dex always has two unnecessary rows on the top instead of one slim row of classic Dex. The first row is your android row that is always there on your phones etc. from which we slide down the notification panel. This is integrated in the taskbar on classic dex. The 2nd row is a big fat row of close, minimise options. It isn't even optimised for their own Samsung notes which is a joke! After making S Notes full screen, when you exit full screen, the row containing page view, full screen options etc. just vanishes. As someone wrote - no one asked for it, no one wanted it and probably no one liked it. I just hope they don't kill the Classic Dex going forward.
Yes! That top row absolutely ruins the screen real estate, even on the Ultra. The only thing I can imagine is Samsung is going to refine it and add to it over time. But as of now it's quite limited on choice and settings.
This sounds like new Dex has some reasonable changes, but someone decided to ship it when it actually only half finished. Only mirroring the tablet screen on external monitors? Seriously?
So it is more OneUI Desktop mode. And for me, that makes perfect sense, if all you dock your tablet with a keyboard, and isn't looking to use it more like a separate computer experience. So they basically just called it the wrong thing. And with that, possibly suggesting that they might drop the previous DEX. This might be because statistics suggest that there isn't enough people looking for the DEX specific features for it to be worth the effort. And at this point, the biggest issue that DEX users might have with this OneUI Desktop mode is that it doesn't support multiple screens in any meaningful way. You might still lose some features, but OneUI Desktop mode, makes a lot of sense as a complementary experience when docking.
the new Samsung dex is best for minecraft pvp than the old one, becuase if u are playing pvp in minecraft kinda bad with mouse the frame pausing for 1 second but the new dex is best for minecraft hahaha, but the old dex is better than new.
Everyone is using a lot of words in the comments section, but essentially it doesn't matter how forward thinking or innovative the new DeX is. If it doesn't allow you to extend your screen on an external monitor, it is unusable. Once they've fixed this issue, then you can finally start comparing both versions.
thank you for this insightful content! I was very happy to see there is a new DeX. I was hoping it would get closer to substitute a laptop. As the video progressed further, I hoped more and more it would not come to the S23U and other devices.. It looks like if one would like to substitute a laptop, he/she would still need to run an Ubuntu on the phone and open it from the DeX screen.. Thanks again!
Some bits of the New DEX are better, but others... not so much. But being given the option to change between 1.0 and 2.0 DEX I think is amazing that Samsung gave us that option. They could've just changed it forever and left it out. I'm sure 2.0 will get improvements throughout the year with more feedback.
I don't think of it as Dex, more of an improved tablet experience. It solves problems with apps that won't work in landscape and multitasking is faster. Definitely not a like a computer interface. Samsung should have called it something different.
the dex is why i went with the tab s9 over the iPad. Samsung and android Is always innovating awesome features that IOS just never seems to advance in despite always having that monetary advantage. Cant see myself leaving Samsung anytime soon, they have really lead the market over everyone else.
What a crap... try to take something a file on the cloud, copy-paste it on your desktop (main screen)... no possible... everything is like this... everything is difficult and not possible like a normal laptop (try to move a file, a pdf to the cloud on your favorite browser...) and I might think that Samsung engineers have never used daily their products before launch...
If anything DeX should be even more desktop like. I want chrome OS on my Tablet, with a propper web Browser, not whatever this is! Honestlz this is a waste of Dev time...
Some of the apps are still not optimized in the New Dex. Most irritating is WhatsApp. My Message typing window is cut at the buttom, regardless of window sizes.
honestly see little reason for this "new dex" to exist it seems to be a direct downgrade from classic dex, this feels like something apple would do, and then unceremoniously kill the classic without any warning, but lucily samsung kept the classic
I can see this as a good substitute for the tablet UX. Maybe over time they could add all the features missing from trditional Dex, like external monitor; and then it could be the only UI on their tablets, with no need to switch between tablet mode and dex mode. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like this is what they are trying to do.
So it's DEX that is messing up the ability of connecting my S24 Ultra to usb c to hdmi without power? I noticed a reddit thread about this, all of my devices that support usb c video don't need power but my $2200 phone does and it's extremely annoying.
why Samsung does this , i bought tab s8 plus last year and now theres no one ui 6 , what a joke , with apple at-least theres new update all the time I am not buying Samsung again. 🤬
@techwithbenefits my S24 doesnt allow my touchscreen monitor in DeX? Spoke to 3 Samsung reps and no one can explain what happened or why its not working.... Heartbreaking, because turning your phone into a tablet was amazing...
It doesn't work for me either.. I have the s24 ultra also and my tv is a LG C1 And it will not work.. On my phone, it finds my tv And when I hit connect, it just doesn't connect for some reason.. I've read that it won't work for anyone with the new galaxy. The very first Samsung phone I have. And then when I try to hook it up, it doesn't work that it's just hilarious. I've read that people are buying in the chords. Also, and those wont-work either.
When I browse on a web site with DEX the size of the fonts are small. How do I increase the size of the fonts so it'll be more readable? And this also goes on the desktop, how do make it larger? Thank you.
@@MahfuzulHaque-y2n Key phrase being, "directly on the inner screen." The Fold has DeX, but only when you connect to an external screen. You can't use it directly on the Fold's inner display like you can with a Tab.
For that purpose it can add a lot of value, I think they can optimise it to make it easier to switch to classic DeX and also not call it DeX lol but as a standalone UI on a tablet screen it does make sense
Well, if they change DEX too much I still have my Note 8 and Note 10 as backups. Love DEX been using it since the Note 8 and for over a year it was my only desktop pc. I wish they would bring back VR, the reason I kept my Note 8.
