It’s always the bot accounts that are the loudest. No profile picture, no photos, no videos, blah blah blah… you make great videos man and even better photos

How do you think this compares sharpness wise with the 60-600? Would love to see a comparison if possible
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
It’s undoubtedly sharper. Unfortunately I don’t have the 60-600 on hand anymore to do a direct comparison. But when I did, the 60-600 was roughly similar to the 150-600 Sport sharpness that I currently own. So I’ll compare this 500mm directly with that lens and upload the test files to my newsletter for people to download ☺️

Thank you, Jeremy! Isn’t it really great news, that we finally get a wildlife prime for Lumix!! Awesome 🙌 slowly I am confident they might actually update the pro series cameras for the Alliance in the near future. Let’s also hope for a 800 f6.3 … would be great, in my book

Yes, you can do manual focusing with flying birds, I have done it with a Hasselblad 2000 FC with a Waist Level Finder and Acute Matte Focus Screen, the Lens was the Zeiss Tele-Tessar 350mm 4.0, you just have to practice a lot, then you can do it.

The IBIS on this kestrel is at least 6EV.

It's nice to see that we're finally getting something other than strictly premium primes and strictly budget zooms. But for now I don’t see any point in switching to it. The aperture is average, weight isn't a big deal for me, and as a Sony user I can't really benefit from the extra sharpness without TC support. The best of its cheaper competitors are good enough in terms of image quality. Sigma had registered patents for 400mm F5 and 700mm f8 along with this one. Now 500mm has been confirmed and I believe that the rest will be about the same concept and price category. Looking forward for 700mm.

Really impressive from Sigma and very welcome addition to the market. Hope it comes to Z too but not holding my breath. The video of the downy really shows the jerking OIS. Was it that bad for photo shooting?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
I'd say it wasn't really a problem for photo, it mostly is weird for video. Out of all the shots I've pulled up in editing now not a single one was soft due to motion blur or the image stab, so that's good news.
@Jimmiehammarstrom47

Well, I think this is the best lens that has been released in time of mirrorless cameras, so light and 5,6 and not 6.3. I mean, that sharpness is amazing (have seen all the other videos about it) If this got released to canon rf, I think I would consider selling my 400 for this.

I own this lens..... It's without doubt the best lens I've ever used, I've owned all the canon primes...500mm f4 / 600mm f4 etc etc and this beats them all hands down for image quality / stabilization / bokeh etc etc and is just a dream to use and carry. If you're on the fence about buying it, don't be... Just buy it !!!

Isn't the camera stabilization more stops than the lens? I also find the Turning on the IBIS in scope in the camera helps train me to hold the lens steady. I have the Sigma 500 f4 in ef mount that I use the converter to my S1 and S1R
@wandelmacherstudio
@wandelmacherstudio 6 месяцев назад
How is that combination working out for you? I am considering the same, but mated to S5IIx …
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
It's right about the same for both, however, I intentionally turned it off as mentioned so that way you guys could see the lens stab itself.

I had the Sony 300mm f2.8 on my bucket list but with this new Sigma lens, it’s got a longer reach,lighter weight, and definitely more affordable. Yes, we can’t get the full frames per second and it has one-stop less light but it will allow me to carry it for longer treks out in nature. The Sony e-mount version will probably release in mid-March. Thanks for the review!👍
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
Totally! Yea depending on your specific use case, it can be hard to decide. I think for most people that want the longer reach anyways, it’s gonna be a hard sell for the 300mm 2.8
@jarrodswackhamer
@jarrodswackhamer 6 месяцев назад
Hi Jeremy, thanks for doing all your good reviews! The L mount system and the S5 II in particular have caught my eye for a while now since it seems like their small form factor macro lens as well as their half macro wide angle would be great and convenient for herp photography. My only hesitation has been their telephoto lens availability, but now with this 500mm Sigma which is also TC compatible on L mount, looks very appealing. Is it correct that though the S5 II has subject detection it lacks bird eye detect? How much does that hamper you or someone coming from a system with bird eye detect? I know you do a lot of manual focusing, but I figured you would have some input.
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
You’re welcome! ☺️ The S5II does actually have bird eye detect even though it doesn’t display it on screen (which is weird), check out my S5II review and you’ll be able to see what I’m talking about, and from my experience, the S5II is definitely one of the more capable autofocus camera bodies currently. Not the best, but in the top 10 so plenty passable. Hope that answers your question!
@jarrodswackhamer
@jarrodswackhamer 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the reply, that's good to hear, I'll check out your vid! Do you think you'll ever test if this 500mm is worth pairing with a 1.4x TC? I see that both Lumix and Sigma make one for the L mount.
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
I don't plan on testing it with that, but I don't think it would be a bad combo if you really need that extra reach! Would definitely recommend it over the 2x TC made by Sigma though@@jarrodswackhamer

I already have actually, just never released the video. Tbh, it was really poor quality which is why I didn’t release it. Not even worth considering in my opinion

Hi, great review. But I've got one question. Why is it that, even after using Sony cameras or the newer S5II camera with such great PDAF, do you still go back to the S1 or the S1H with the slower AF? Thanks.
@longrider9551
@longrider9551 6 месяцев назад
Kiddo, I'm considering buying this lens. What would you say your hit rate was? Did it do a good job tracking and getting shots in focus?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
The camera I spent my time testing it with is not up-to-date on AF technology so I can’t give you a great answer. But, in the little bit I have done AF it is accurate
@mi9se253
@mi9se253 6 месяцев назад
What do you think of the fixed 500mm? Seems like a strange reach without the possibility for converters.
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
It’s interesting! Not against it, definitely like it more than 400 as I’m not as big on that focal length. I think of it kinda like the 300 where it’s a little more niche than a standard 600 or 200 for what they do.

No crop of the Hummingbird.
@pentagramyt417
@pentagramyt417 6 месяцев назад
Well for smaller birds, this lens is not practical, I'd rather want 600 mm f6.3, or even 800 mm f6.3, I hope sigma does one in the background... Feels bad that we can't use teleconverters in sony gear for third party. Overall great lens, lightweight, but I THINK Sony is going to do some as Nikon, supertelephoto lenses in soon future. edit: I still claim (as a Sony user) that probably the best lens for wildlife for birds is 150-400 TC Olympus.
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 6 месяцев назад
500mm 5.6 is plenty enough for small birds if you have just a bit of extra MP to crop in my experience. For example, you could see the shots I got of the Anna's Hummingbird a few minutes into the video, can't get a much smaller subject then that and it still looks great frame filled.
@pentagramyt417
@pentagramyt417 6 месяцев назад
@@JeremyNeipp Ok, that depends from the birds. If it is in the city, you can, but if the bird is 15-20 meters away from you, and you can't get closer, there is no chance to follow up. Also bigger birds are usually also skittisch, like Grey Heron, or a specific birds where you need a specific lens, hen birds is faaar away on the mountains environment. That's why beeing around 900-1200 mm is so crucial for small bird/and bird itself photography. If you don't prepare for bird photography, and just walk around and shoot, they see you, and there is almost no chance to come closer to Grey Heron than 40-50 meteres, and most of the animals, like Rabbits and so... I hope you get me. Maybe it depend how wild is your area, but in mine, these animals are very wild and react very quickly. My sony 200-600 on APS-C mode on A7IV is not enough in 30-40% situations if I walk around, but of course that would be different if I would cover myself in CAMO and sit since 3:00 AM and wait patiently for them at some places... But lenses like that, are very light and made to walk, not really to sit and wait.
