It was an Opinion Piece because the author is an opinion columnist for the NYT. Her pieces appear on a regular schedule, and they're viewed my millions of people. It actually got way more exposure because it was an opinion piece than it would have it if it had been regular reporting.
I don't think that we know that the regret rate was 1% even under the old heavily gate kept model. I don't think that we have any solid numbers on the regret rate then or now. As an anecdote, the first trans person I ever met had detransitioned. He was a male-to-female-to-male nurse on the first ward I worked on. He was around 50. It was the early 90's.
Knee replacement is medically necessary so that the person can walk again. There is no other medical alternative. It’s not operating on a healthy body to ‘treat’ an issue with the mind.

Do you think it would be helpful for a very qualified multidisciplinary group of people, (hopefully, not at risk for cancellation) to write a piece contrasting Judith Butler’s gender theory, highly abstract and impervious to empirical study, with the evidenced-based hypotheses about the causes of gender dysphoria that are evolving today as a result of studying people with gender dysphoria and their highly varied experiences? I would like to ask Judith Butler: what evidence do you have to support your theory?
It’s a pervasive belief on Reddit that rectal progesterone leads to greater feminizing effects (specifically breast growth). Which is ironic because my understanding is that there is very little research on the effects of progesterone in trans women, and absolutely zero research on rectal progesterone. My ex takes progesterone rectally because of this and never even tried it orally.
Meanwhile at USPATH a guy gave a presentation on how great hormone Fandoms are for getting patients the drugs they wanted. I would have thought any medical professional would warn against this and he passingly mentioned numerous misconceptions, false or unevidenced claims but somehow came out that they're overwhelmingly positive. He also thinks that patients should ask their doctor for the hormone drugs and affirmative care they want and get it effectively after 1 appointment. He works for the American military in a gender clinic. He also thought he was a eunuch after coming across the Eunuch archive and he was sent puberty blockers through the post by a doctor who never saw him. (if you look up Dr Jame LGBTQ you can find some wild claims by him) It feels like the most damaged ppl are leading everyone else into a downward spiral with complete disregard for safety, particularly for those driven by paraphilias to go more and more extreme.
They shouldn’t be taking progesterone at all, since the male body will convert it into DHT via the backdoor pathway. The male fetus uses mom’s progesterone to make DHT, which turns the gonads into testes. Sounds like Reddit has a different idea of a “backdoor pathway” 😂 While progesterone contributes to breast growth in pregnant females, IMO it seems like the male body will just convert it to DHT and give them an enlarged prostate. So it actually does the opposite of what those Redditors claim!
If one takes the postmodern, widely held belief of total personal freedom to its logical, albeit radical, conclusion, then it would include freedom from one's biological constraints, freedom from social responsibility, freedom from the shackles of truth and objectivity... and if one takes the widely held belief that medicine is a profession that is there to enable us to be happy--which many aspects of medicine have become, including fertility "healthcare", transgender "healthcare", most plastic surgeries-- and that doctors are not experts in fields that "patients" know very little to nothing about (although we patients might know about our symptoms, feelings, emotions, etc.), but serviceproviders for "clients", then the logical and radical conclusion is that doctors should be our enablers. Freedom and the legitimation of our desires, and a strangely understood notion of "health" (as something medical, as opposed to a sort of balanced life, with four pillars for which we have to make sure ourselves, not a doctor or expert [nutrition, movement, connection, and rest], are all threaded together with other cultural understandings related to marketization and commodification, etc., to produce the insanity that is "gender-affirming healthcare"...
Right, but ironically, self-transformation as a consumer product usually depends on government funding or insurance coverage, ultimately other people's money. So, some people can have complete autonomy, but those who pay for the treatment have no choice.
I just had one disappear because I know where there is the presentation on youtube of the medical Fandoms. The guy who does it has a RU-vid. He's astoundingly unprofessional and has no medical ethics. Let's see if this sticks

This was a great (if at times scary) talk. I think it brings home the fact that, just because you study science and become a doctor/surgeon/nurse/psychiatrist, you are not necessarily a critical thinker/sceptic. There are doctors who believe in homeopathy so why would we be surprised that some hold illogical and non science based positions on trans healthcare - they're fallible human beings after all? Above all else, this whole 'we must not question a person's reasons/decision to change gender/sex identity, and must see all comorbidities as simply the result of (and not the cause of) their gender issues' is just a great big post hoc rationalisation fallacy. We start with the absolute primacy of the trans identity - even if this is a child or a severely ill person presenting to us - and then work backwards from there. Not a good way to practise medicine imo.
I think you'll find that the doctors and nurses who have also trained in alternative medicine are the ones who have had the LEAST trouble seeing through gender woo woo (not to mention the "safe and effective" covid "vaccines"). that is where you will find the critical thinkers in medicine and nursing. It's those who go with the herd and are satisfied with the limitations of conventional medicine who fall for whatever nonsense the herd is stampeding towards, whether gender woo woo, or covid madness.
I agree. It’s a post-hoc rationalization fallacy. The whole never question a persons reasons or motivations for transitioning is very backwards. There is a big taboo around it.
41:45 Eh, you did mischaracterize somewhat what Karasic said. Just going by the recording you posted, he was talking about someone who preferred drawing to talking, not someone who was "nonverbal". If you're going to make accusations like that, you have to be precise. Otherwise you could get yourself sued.
She's on the autism spectrum. That's probably what you're responding to. I think she has a very JK Rowling/Tori Amos type energy which I personally find charming.
