i'm glad you kept in the fact that Maidenpool is in fact in Minecraft, people always leave that part out but i think it's one of George's boldest additions to the series
Us Harrion Karstark loyalists will wait with optimism for him to reclaim the Karhold. We think House Thenn should be given the Dreadfort in place of the Boltons
Waiting for TWOW for Magnar Sigorn to return and save his Lord Stannis from Ramsey Bolton. The bronzed up barbarian decks the creepy sadist and says, "This may be Winterfell, but to me it looks like you're on Thenn ice." Stomps foot, all Boltons and Freys fall into ice water and die. Scene.
So I think the Thenns are sort of a view into how the First Men lives during the age of heroes. They live the farthest North of any people we've seen so far, which sort of indicates that they're the last remnant of how things were before the Andals. In particular, I think the fact that they see their magnar as a god is a nod to the old greenseer kings, whose legacy Bran will reignite.
The First Men split between the Wildlings beyond the Wall and the people subjected to the Starks between the Twins and the Wall. I will never understand why the subjects of the Staks, UNCONQUERED by the Andals, adopted the Andalic language.
@@pawezielinski2781 There are many ways a culture can be changed beyond conquest. Marriages, commerce, peacuful miggration etc. The Andal culture has a some characteristics like the use of steel, an organized religion with appointed priests and a alphabet. Those aspects would naturally flow trough the Neck and be adoppted by the North as it they fit better in more organized kingdoms with central leadership and strict rules of inheritance.
@@pawezielinski2781language does expand by influence, odds are the northerners had a lot more cultural and economical contact with the Andal conquered regions than with the wildings, slowly taking aspects of the southies, including language, tho I agree that they should speak more of a kin language than the same language, something like what English is to french, not of the same linguistic line but they still overlap
@@unavela that would be a given, the Andals brought with them a lot of valuable knowledge and after having conquered all of Westeros but the North controlled a massive quantity of resources the North would have needed for trade. Nothing but the Neck separates the North from the Andals in the south, but the Wildlings? They have little knowledge the Northmen don't already know, they have little resources but fur and lumber and there's a massive wall between them. Not to mention centuries of generational hatred between the two.
The sigil also has the same colour scheme to weirwood trees (+ the bronze). Might be unintentional but it also might signify their connection to the old gods.
Adding to the point about House Thenn's loyalties, they're not among the group of free folk who pledge Jon their swords. Given that Alys says she thinks Karhold will open the gates for her, I think that's where she'll be. But if the castle will yield to her without a siege, then she doesn't necessarily need all the Thenn's with her, just a decent sized escort. It's possible Sigorn might lead the remaining men to Stannis, seeing as how he is his overlord now. If that's the case, leaving directly from Castle Black to Winterfell would position him behind Stannis, thereby protecting his rear. But if he traveled to Karhold with Alys even partially, we're looking at a March from the east that could attack, whatever forces the Boltons send from Winterfell's eastern gate. I just love speculating over the Winds of Winter.
Fun fact- Though Alys Karstark is the commonly accepted candidate for the 'grey girl on a dying horse', she's never depicted on page wearing grey. We first see her sleeping in a black blanket given her by the Watch, and Jon doesn't note the color of the damp clothes on the ground next to her. Because of this discrepancy, I've wondered if the 'grey girl' is actually someone else who's yet to arrive and Alys was just a red herring (a la Quentyn Martell in Meereen). Could it be either of the Jeynes, both of whom are "sisters" of sorts to Jon and have reason to seek his protection? Could the 'grey girl' be Asha Greyjoy? It might be unlikely that the Grey Girl isn't Alys; but given that Alys wasn't depicted in grey and isn't Jon's sister...it's still fun to speculate about. Great video!!
@@t_hetty1758I think that's a stretch. I'd think Melisandre could recognize the difference between the skin of a greyscale afflicted person and someone dressed in grey clothing.. she has been around Shireen for the past few years so it's not like she's unaware of what that looks like.
@@Human-zx4rb So you're saying Melisandre, who's been around Shireen for a minimum of several years now, wouldn't recognize a person whose body was covered with the same skin Shireen has on her face? Mel might err occasionally but she's not that stupid. In fact, when Mel searches the flames to see the grey girl again, she gets a vision of Bloodraven's face- which she describes as wooden and corpse white. So she can make a distinction between texture and color in her visions. Therefore there's no reason to assume Mel couldn't identify a greyscale covered person if she saw one, and there's no reason to think she can't tell the difference between textured skin and clothing. If anything, the misinterpretation was more likely that the girl was Jon's sister or that the girl was fleeing a marriage- not that the person was covered in greyscale rather than grey clothing. Imo. But to each their own my friend :) .
The thenns aren't the only wildlings who speak the old tounge. Ygritte at least understands some of it and Tormund and Leathers are both shown speaking with giants
I know right?, it's like they think Karstarks are not important when they are pretty much the true kings in the north by right at the end of the last book... since is pretty unprobable that any Stark alive is gonna claim his/her rights.
I imagine that if they don't get Karhold they will be given one of the castles in The Gift and be one of the most prominent groups re-settling it post-Long Night.
All of Westeros was built in Minecraft, it's called Westeroscraft. I think their Design of many castles like Dragonstone for example is genius and much better than in the show, Summerhall and Castamere are also great, and many many other castles aswell. They try to keep as exactly to the book descriptions as possible. They also have a RU-vid channel, called Westeroscraft, with tours and timelapses of their builds.
I'm going to check that out ASAP. What does Casterly Rock look like? That and Highgarden are the ones I want to see most, along with Summerhall and Storm's End.
Is Bronn's house name called Blackwater? I know it was Bronn of the Blackwater (perhaps like Brienne of Tarth, even though that is also confusing), but I couldn't find any confirmation other than from the wiki for the role playing game.
I wonder who'll get the Bolton's lands at the end. I'm hoping for Theon to start a new house and "start sowing" to counter the Greyjoy words. As for children, he likely has a few bastards, but more importantly there's the shipman's daughter who he most likely got pregnant and with whom i think he'll reunite. Would also be a nice twist of fate that a man tortured by the Boltons ends up having their home and making sure no one will be tortured in such ways in that fort again
Wait...why are the Thenns the only ones who can communicate with giants? Leathers and Tormund could I think, they just speak the Old Tongue which isn't limited to just the Thenns I think.
Yeah, the non native speakers we have met are Leathers and Tormund, though Mance can sing in the Old Tongue. Then again, I can sing in spanish, doesn't mean I know what tf I am saying.
@@j-rey- I'm sure it's probably a regional thing, but maybe like at least one person in a village or smaller geographical area can functionally speak it. I mean i think some maesters know bits or can speak it, tho it would be less common. That's my interpretation at least!
Wdym "You dont think he'll end up on the iron throne". I find your lack of faith disturbing Ser. You have preached defeat ever since the blackwater. If a sacrifice is needed to please the lord,I think we know who should be offered.
What many people, including players don't seem to know, is you can play as house thenn in the feast for crows start date in ck2 agot. In it you lead a landless band of men and can join either stannis or the nights watch. When I did so i took over the riverlands and then died fighting the white walkers.
Okay this was the coolest video. Straightforward story telling on Quinn's part, such optimistic material for the bleak future of Westeros. Overall really well told story of the new house 😁
It might be cool to discuss how noble houses can be formed by bastards, e.g. house Longwaters. I have read about it before, but I always forget (Rennifer Longwaters is the loquacious type). The differences between trueborn, baseborn, and bastard born always confuse me as well. Having one of my fav RU-vidrs cover it in a video is better than having to google search each time.
Trueborn refers to legitimate children and potentially legitimized bastards, bastards are all illegitimate children, and baseborn children are those born to a common parent but not necessarily a bastard though it is often used to refer to bastards with a non-noble parent
@@noahgarneau4438 Thanks dude. It's always hard to keep it straight after going months without reading it, then trying to remember. That's why I think I would find a video about it useful. If it is in connection with how bastards can form noble houses, my brain would retain the information better since I am connecting it with a more comprehensive analysis of bastards in general, rather than just rote memorization. Also, I am a visual learner.
House Baratheon will probably go extinct, unless Edric Storm isn't legitimated by a king. House Bolton will surely go extinct House Greyjoy could go extinct considering that Euron and Victarion will probably die, then we are actually not sure if Theon can produce heirs and then there would be Asha, who could keep the name Greyjoy but it's tricky. House Martell is risking because they have already lost Quentyn, only Arianne and Trystane are left, but things don't look good,at least for her. The main branch of House Arryn will go extinct too, it's very unlikely that Robert Arryn will survive the Winter
House Frey too will be wiped out,Stoneheart is hanging every Frey she can put her hands on,and another wedding is going to take place in Riverrun... They are cursed for violating the laws of Gods and men
@niccologregorutti9309 I think edric storm probably will be legitimised. I don't see any other reason to send him to lys. He might even be legitimised by aegon or dany and made the new lord of the stormlands. House greyjoy won't go extinct. There's also two cousins whom have like one page mentioning them in affc and I doubt they'll be mentioned again. House martell also has the sand snakes and I don't doubt that aegon would legitimise them if they got in serious trouble. There's also manfrey martel, again a cousin. Robin arryn is a red herring. Everyone says he will die so he likely won't
As someone who knows nothing of Thenns besides whats in this video and the one mention they get in the show. How are they okay with being wed under the lord of light instead of the old gods?
I don't recall it actually being stated outright that they formed a new house? I know they get married. Could it not have been a matrilineal one, with the Magnar taking her name?
Unrelated note, I loved the vid, but I watched the targaryen rankings, agree with alot of those. Also, what if Jon Snow's real name was Aemon Targaryen. That would be an awesome coincidence, since I think there was a line in one of the books that said "he didn't feel like an Aemon Targaryen".
Eh? I know House Baratheon is technically a new house, but it seems like a continuation of House Durrandon to me. it seems like it's seen that way in the books too, because both Corlys and Olenna call them an ancient house.
Based purely on how inhospitable most places are north of the Wall, I have been dying to know how tf they can survive up there, especially having the Others living next door and stopping by all the time to borrow a cup of sugar.
Great channel man👍🏼 I've been here since you had 1k followers. I don't always agree with your statements but that's what makes it fun to watch. Keep it up💪🏽
Damn, the North has it really rough, in terms of houses going extinct (EX)/functionally exctinct (FE)/probably going excinct (PE) in the books. House Bolton (PB) House Cerwyn (FE) House Cassel (FE) House Flint of Widow's Watch (EX) House Hornwood (FE) House Locke (FE) since we haven't gotten any confirmed lineage for the Lockes yet.
Does this mean you'll cover other newer houses as well? Cadet branches like House Tyrell of Brightwater Keep or completely new houses like House Slynt (however short it'll be)?
On the Old tongue vs common. Is it ever directly stated that common is andalosi? Maybe its me trying to cope my way out of the huge glaring issue that is language in ASOIAF in westeros, but the only way realistically that I can see common being spoken both by wildings beyond the wall and by the dornish in sunspear is if its a first man language.
The First Men split between the Wildlings beyond the Wall and the people subjected to the Starks between the Twins and the Wall. I will never understand why the subjects of the Staks, UNCONQUERED by the Andals, adopted the Andalic language.
This has actually happening quite some times in history where a language ends up having such an influence it ends up displacing or dominating the native language even without conquest for example the Assyrians originally spoke Akkadian but with time changed to Aramaic the Scots also originally spoke gaelic/goidelic but with time got displaced by Scots (depending on who you ask is just scottish english or a different language all together)
I just like to think GRRM got lazy somehow. It's a huge ass continent, I'm surprised each region didn't developed their own language. And even if it is really all settled by a single group, considering the long timeframes, it would have at least split apart, like how the Romance languages developed from Latin.
Jon: "You're not scared?" Alys: "Let him be scared of me." ................. Melisandre: "Alys, do you swear to share your fire with Sigorn, and warm him when the night is dark and full of terrors?" Alys: "til his blood is boiling." Somehow, I think these two will be alright 😉😊😛
I think you misrepresent the reason for the Karstarks leaving the war, which lets them off the hook significantly. They do have a leader; with Harrion in captivity, they take orders directly from Arnolf back in Karhold. They also still have local battle commanders, presumably, who can be placed under the command of another lord if needed. They don't just get to go "we don't have a boss any more, guess we'll just head home"; they'd have to send to Karhold for orders on whether to follow Robb or desert him, and presumably they got their orders because they did (b). Deserting your king in wartime is a serious crime, however mad you might be at him. It's interesting to speculate what would happen to a lord's bannermen if he and his house WERE completely extinguished in battle, though. I'd guess in normal circumstances they'd continue to follow his king until his title was bestowed on someone else, but in this case it's slightly complicated (at least psychologically) by the king being the one to execute him. Probably if a king was knowingly executing the last surviving member of a noble house he would give their lands to a loyal ally in the same breath, both to avoid inheritance disputes and to put down any rebellions the execution might spark among the executee's own loyalists.
Alys and Sigorn are the foils of Bronn and Lollys. Both Bronn & Sigorn married noble ladies to overhaul noble houses but Alys and Bronn are the clever halves of their couple.
Reading and hearing more and more about the lore and world building of ASOIAF has made me hate the tv series more and more such waisted potential the writers where bafoons of the highest degree this series deserves a reboot in the form of an animated series
