I keep seeing a lot of people ragging on this saying just screw it to the cleat, but many people have storage bins and other items in a French cleat system that you want to remove from the wall on a regular basis. These type of quick locks are nice so you can remove a bin or something quickly to your project location without the need to unscrew and rescrew in, stripping out a hole over time for a screw.
@dmyt58
@dmyt58 Год назад
make a hole just under the vertical plank and put a bolt with a nut in there. Boom cant go up, just unscrew it if you want to change it and it wont fall from the wall anymore. Also you wont strip anything since there is no screw in the wood. This video idea takes way to long to make for its purpose.
@mikep3813
@mikep3813 Год назад
@@dmyt58 Wouldn't unscrewing it require a tool? If it is something you take off the wall and put back quite frequently a no tool locking mechanism would be much more convenient. And if you 3d print them, press play and walk away. Even the wooden ones he made are not complicated and you can knock out a couple dozen in like 15 minutes.

This is a great idea. Most of my tool holders are heavy enough they don't need to be locked, but I'm about to make a bunch for my garage, where the tool will greatly outweigh the holder. This locking device should make them secure yet still portable....screwing them in the wall defeats the purpose of a French cleat!

This is a great video and solution for somebody looking to make some “perfect”. For me and considering it’s a tool wall in my garage I typically go the route of just putting a screw through the face of the holder at a height that the screw itself will provide the hold down on the back side, just under the wall French cleat (it doesn’t actually thread in to the French clear on the wall, just below it). If I need to move it I just back out the screw- easy.

I like simply using a T-nut on the inside and a machine screw from the outside which sits right at the bottom of the cleat; it’s quite a cheap fix and can be even cheaper with just a wood screw going through though the T-Nut allows the screw to be removed and re-installed more times. I don’t find myself moving things around a cleat wall enough for these though keeping things from popping off is a must for smaller holders.
@mailmusic
@mailmusic Год назад
an off set wood circle works well also
@kettch42
@kettch42 Год назад
Seems like it could still lift forward from the bottom, even if it fixes the lifting up problem. You could make a double french cleat, that is, inset the lower part of the rail so the lock slides behind the rail, similar to how the top locks in. Also, I imagine the screw will unwind eventually. If it was worth the effort, you could use inset bolts with lock nuts to hold the locking lever in.

French cleats are great for determining the ideal placement location of stuff but once you find it a home, it generally stays put. That's why I just put a drywall screw that's long enough to go through the holder and into the cleat.... On that rare occasion it needs to move, you're just one screw away from making it happen. Or if you don't have anything else to do.... you can play waist-a-day making and then installing all of these little holder gadgets😵‍💫

Good content as usual Clinton. Just a couple thoughts as I was watching... You should try one rounded on both sides. It would need a flat part on the top to prevent it 'rolling over but it would make it universal. Alternatively I wonder if you just countersink your homemade version on both sides if it wouldn't also be reversible? Would work especially well with your screwy (pun intented) handle. Thanks for the info. I appreciate all you do.
@SpecificLove7

That is a great idea with countersinking both sides to make it universal. Definitely thank you for the suggestion.
@PikkaBird
@PikkaBird Год назад
@@SpecificLove7 That was my first thought, and this would enable you to just batch out a whole bunch of these without planning your layout in advance. Bob can redo his 3D printed version to have the same functionality if he ditches the deep hole and has a countersink (or even just a shallow recess for flat head screws) on both sides and replaces the paddle with a hook.

Nice solution, but an even simpler tool-less lock would be a piece of dowel straight through the holder, just make it long enough that it sticks out a bit when fully pushed against the wall, so it can be pulled back easily (and maybe turn a small integrated handle on the end if you're feeling fancy) Advantages: no need to have access to the side of the holder to remove it, much simpler to make

First, I can see that a firm stop locking system can be useful on some cleated tool holders. And this is a really good one. Thanks for sharing. Second a french cleat tip: I had one tool holder that was more of a rattler than a complete disengage which was a little annoying. I put one coat of flex seal the back of the holder effectively rubberizing it but not on the cleat itself. This solved my rattle problem but didn’t impede my ability to move my tool holder around without an extra step working with or around a locking mechanism. Third, also a french cleat tip: I have the bottom of my wall cleats at 45° as well. Again easy enough to move a tool holder when needed but makes it more resistance to accidental cleat ejection. 😃
@ashokmoghe8035
@ashokmoghe8035 Год назад
Not sure I understand the third tip. Can you please elaborate more on that? TIA
@lincolndickerson1293
@lincolndickerson1293 Год назад
@@ashokmoghe8035 I’ll try Typically: the wall cleat has a 45° cut on the top and the bottom is flat and the tool holder cleat is flat on the top and the bottom is at a 45° My cleats wall and tool cleats are the same height. The wall cleats are spaced one cleat height apart. All the cleats are cut at a 45° angle top and bottom so they are parallelograms. So when you slide the tool cleat into the wall cleats it fits into the wall cleats touching 2 wall cleats, the one above and the one below. The tool holder must be slide in and out at at 45° angle. I hope youtube keeps the formatting in this next part in tact: w is wall wc is wall cleat tc is tool cleat like any french cleat wall the tool holder is attached to the tool cleat and can span multiple wall cleats with or without additional tool cleats above top cleat w| / | w| / | w|/ | w||wc| w||wc| w||wc| w||wc// | w|| // | w|| //tc| w|| //tc | w| //tc | w|//tc | w||tc | w||tc | w||tc | w||tc //| w||tc // | w||tc// | w|| // | w|| //wc| w||//wc | w||/wc | w||wc// | w|| // | w|| //tc| w| //tc | w| //tc | w|//tc | w||tc | w||tc | w||tc | w||tc //| w||tc // | w||tc// | w|| // | w|| //wc| w||//wc | w||/wc | …

I did an entire wall (4' x 8') of FC, and it does hang a lot of stuff. However, the FC concept is justified by the flexibility of moving things around. I built my wall about 8 years ago (you see what's coming, right?!) and haven't moved anything yet. I find 1/2" plywood over drywall makes an excellent mounting wall. Whatever support device you conceive, mount it on 1/8" oversize backer board, and hang it on two or three keyhole'd screw locations. It's easy to remove, largely "fastened" for security, and the backer board gives you a template for screw locations if you want to rearrange locations of support devices. That's proven (for me) much more flexible than cleats.

I’m going to be doing the vagabond thing with a motorhome in a few months and I’m going to gut and convert a 24ft travel trailer and turn it into my towable, wanderer’s wood shop. so I’m going to need a locking French cleat system to prevent things jumping off the cleats on bumpy roads, but one that also resists sliding in case I have to slam on the breaks my tools don’t all slide along the cleat wall towards the front. I’m thinking a number of different things, including a 45 on the bottom of each wall cleat as well as the top, and slot in the forward plate of each holder with a thumbscrew or star knob that can be loosened and tightened,releasing and locking a mating piece hard up against the 45 on the underside of the wall cleat. Perhaps that mating finger will have a high friction anti-skid piece of material glued to its 45. It’s going to be fun to workshop it.

@@Mr_Rick One of the reasons to go with French cleats is that you don’t need any tools to hang or rearrange the holders. So you _can_ add a screw - heck, you can screw right into the cleat and make them semi-permanent. I love this addition because it lets you lock in the bracket and remove it tool-free. I never thought I’d rearrange my French cleats as much as I do and I have come to really appreciate the ease with which I can put things within reach for today, then swap them out for the next project.
