This week’s film breakdown analyzes Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and why the NFL completely stopped blitzing him. Mahomes always had a low blitz percentage, but this past year it dropped to the lowest ever recorded. This allowed defenses to drop deep into coverage and freed them up to play almost exclusively two high safeties. What can the Chiefs learn from last season and how can they improve moving forward? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Also, I watched my midseason Chiefs video back after finishing this episode and realized how many of the same plays I used completely inadvertently. @Captain Ren Super in on Juju, I don't think we'll have another "Cooper Kupp" this year, but if we do it's him. He's had a past top 6 WR finish and he's getting a massive QB upgrade. True, but the Bills actually started this trend earlier that year (2020 regular season) in a game that they lost to the Chiefs where they played their LBs WAY off the line of scrimmage pre-snap, even on some early downs, and rarely sent pressure throughout the game, dedicating all their resources to coverage and daring the Chiefs to run the ball. Although the Bills didn't get the win, other teams slowly but surely started implementing the same strategy because it did help limit the Chiefs explosiveness in that game. On a side note, Aikman was just hilariously bad on the call throughout that entire game, ripping the Bills for allowing the Chiefs run game to get going, apparently oblivious to the fact that it was an intentional choice to give the Chiefs RBs some room to operate over getting killed by Kelce and Hill. It's called game planning my man!

That was a pretty accurate breakdown of the Chiefs offense and of Mahomes. I would like to remind people that Watkins played a huge role in allowing Hill and Kelce to run free. While he wasn't lighting up the stats, his presence was noticed in the aggregate. Once he started getting hurt, then became a FA, you immediately saw the weakness in their offense, and that was their lack of depth at WR and TE. Outside of Hardman, the rest were mediocre to subpar. It didn't take long for teams to figure that out, so they took away Hill's speed and Kelce's field awareness, leaving Mahomes with very little to work with. I think Mahomes' struggles at the beginning of the year last year was needed for him to grow as a QB. It forced him to learn how to stay in the pocket, be patient, and let his teammates make the plays for him. Sure, losing Hill isn't good, but the offense got way better and so did the defense because of that trade. Reid and company had to scheme every play to try and specifically get Hill or Kelce open, because they couldn't do that for anybody else. Now they can scheme it to get anybody open whenever they want to.

Excellent topic! I am glad that you discussed this. Aside from the Eagles (because I'm an Eagles fan), I think that the Chiefs are the team that I am most curious to see play in the 2022 season. I am curious to see how their offense will perform without Tyreek Hill. I do agree with you, in that, while I wouldn't want to say for sure that this will happen, but I can indeed see a scenario in which the Chiefs will be even better on offense this year, from the standpoint that they could be a little more balanced, and have possibly more threats that you would need to account for on defense. I believe that I commented on one of your Chiefs videos from the 2021 season that I felt that the Chiefs were missing a third option that could take advantage of all of the attention that Hill and Kelce receive. I could see the 2022 Chiefs being like the 2010 Patriots, who had to adjust their offense when they traded away Randy Moss, and Tom Brady ended up having an MVP season. However, I could also see a scenario in which the Chiefs struggle, if it turns out that a lot of their offensive success was dependent on the threat that Tyreek Hill poses to blow a game open on any play. That's what makes them so fascinating coming into the season!

Not throwing to a wr that has a DB within a yard away is the same thing that college spread offense QBs always struggle with coming to the pros. Not having that WR that is completely, obviously open or on a mismatch that the spread offense creates so often at the college level. Isn't this basically what the Patriots ended up doing when they drafted Gronk and Hernandez in 2010? They just worked the middle of the field and started to use the outside receivers less and less. They say history repeats itself, and all great coaches know how to swing the pendulum back to their favor. Just like everyone wondered whether Brady can live without Moss at the time, it is the same way that people are talking about Mahomes and Hill. Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the coming years.

With how efficient Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been so far this season, I think those heavier looks will pay off for KC, and help to open up their pass game more since defenses have to respect the run more from KC now that ever before, opening up the explosive plays we know Patrick Mahomes to be so good at delivering on.

Love all your content, but I live in KC so I'm obviously super bias when you make Chiefs videos. Do you think defenses will continue to employ a two high safety look against the Chiefs without Hill on the team? Or does another receiver (Hardman?) fill the speed slot? Ultimately, with hindsight, I'd have liked to see us utilize the run game more throughout the 2nd half of the last season (especially in the AFCCG) to counter the double high safety.
@AlexRollinsNFL
@AlexRollinsNFL Год назад
Thanks Jon! I think it'll be lesser so, the 2nd safety was there primarily for Tyreek. I don't think they're too high on Hardman, I think it's MVS who will fill the speed portion of their offense. The reason I talked about them improving is I think they lost the speed element of their offense when Tyreek was asked to play primarily underneath. He was still great with the ball in his hands but I don't think they operated as much like a "typical offense" like they needed to. That's why I think they'll improve this year

You discount the fact when offenses can force opposing teams to passing scripts. Like when offenses dump 3 scores in the first half and the opposing team HAS to play pass (unless they have an efficient run/pass execution) which plays into the two high shell defense. The Chiefs like many great/efficient pass offenses can also attack the intermediate area well and punch for chunk plays when the defense slips up with their coverage. If anything they have to scheme ways to turn run attempts to efficient short passes.

The problem with the chiefs is that they don't run the ball enough nor effectively. Andy Reid is known to be pass heavy, it's fun to watch abd all but defenses don't respect their run so they don't stack the box , they just play two high. If the cheifs would run the ball more and run it effectively, those two safety's high would disappear in a jiffy. You would see one high safety more , with other safety dropping into the box for run support. Essentially because the chiefs pass so much they fail to keep the D honest.

But now teams will jam him up and if they have the personnel (Chargers with Derwin James aka the anti-TE) they will make it difficult for Kelce to be physical off the line and get to his spot at the intermediate part of the field. Because part of the success of the adjustments made last season was how well Kelce (who wasn't exactly 100% last season) could be physical to get open in the middle and get his catches.

I had suggested this to you before, but: Cooper Kupp was always a very good to excellent receiver, but then he became the best receiver in the league during 2021. @ThirdThinker
@ThirdThinker Год назад
Change in QB. I've watched this dude since he was in Eastern Washington. He's amazing. I always thought he was underrated and was limited at QB play. Goff isn't even close to the QB Stafford is. There's nobody better at just pitching - he's almost as good as Brady at reading, and even Brady would tell you he's a better pure quarterback than he was. And he earned that SB ring, LA won that game when it counted most. Finally, don't forget what every QB needs: a good defense.

Really enjoyed the video but had a question. From what I understand wasn't the Chief O line kinda bad as well? The blitz percentage would be lower if people are still getting pressure with a four-man rush. Which then opens up the chance to play more two high coverages? So is the switch to cover two also just made possible by the bad o line of the Chiefs?
@AlexRollinsNFL
@AlexRollinsNFL Год назад
Thanks! Mahomes has one of the lowest pressure % in the NFL (which is partly because he's so good at getting the ball out and evading pressure). The Chiefs OL is fine, everyone at RT struggled mightily this past year so that was an issue but otherwise they are fine
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Год назад
Chiefs O-line despite their injuries were still very good as a group in Pass pro. Even when Mahomes takes 7 steps back and goes 10 yards behind the LOS. Though he got away with this then because teams weren't vehemently building a roof defensively against his pass game. Blitz percentages overall were lower against QBs who were great against it and have the weapons to make the defense pay. DCs/HCs overall are playing 4-man or contain pass rush outside of the outlier blitz happy coaches (Spagnulo, Wink Martindale, etc.)

Chiefs can fix alot of things with only a few small changes. 1: Stop the RPO nonsense and go back to play action concepts. 2: RUN THE BALL! If teams are going to play soft out of fear of the deep ball, then chew them up on the ground. Chiefs were whipping the Bengals in the first half of the AFC Championship game, and they averaged 5.6YPC for the game. But in the second half they completely abandoned the run, only calling 5 rushing plays. We all know how that one ended up. When they Chiefs play a balanced game they are extremely tough to beat. They just need to stop always trying to call highlight reel plays and just stick to gashing the Defense until they crowd the line, then take their shot.

Short and intermediate crossers are West-Coast bread and butter. But you need some big, tough WRs to pursue that strategy. With the right guys, that short passing game can be super consistent at generating 8 yards a catch, if you have tough enough guys to get YAC and take some hits over the middle.

Without Tyreek Hill the threat of gamebreaking speed making your corners look silly is gone, and the receiving corps isn't all that scary outside of Kelce. On KC's end, I know this is sacrilege to say but I think they should make a concerted effort to take the ball OUT of Mahomes' hands. Now he has a bevy of taller, bigger guys that can be aggressive in winning contested throws.
