A brief rundown of the NHL's decision to cancel the in-person draft and a look at some of the antics of the first round! That and more on today's NHL hockey video :)
Stuck with a stupid, generic look…should’ve been boo’d out the building. It doesn’t take a year-and-a-half to come up with a decent logo and look; the longer they take, the worse the final design will be.
Why is Bettman even booed in the States? As for the WTF reaction from Beckett Sennecke being picked third, I had the same reaction when the Habs picked Reinbacher fifth last year.
@@leezwatz3339it’s just tradition to boo him. I was at SAP Center for the sharks draft party and the entire arena booed him, but everyone was laughing about it too. it’s like WWE and he’s the villain, it’s just fun.
@@leezwatz3339 Because he's running the NHL into the ground with all his terrible decisions and bias. It's pretty easy to understand if you follow hockey for more than 5 minutes.
I'm a new fan to hockey but moving the draft away from in person is an insane decision, especially since the number one complaint is a problem they seemed to have created for themselves. "Oh there's so much travel" why is your entire front office announcing the pick? Just let Gary Bettman do everything
Yea boo fricken hoo. There's literally only two teams that just finished their season that could even remotely have the right to complain. There are half the teams that had 2 months off, and the other half of varying time off since April. It must be so fkn difficult to be flown around on the company dollar to sit around and live the high live in Las Vegas. Instead of not having the draft in person next year, fire those that are complaining and hire people that would love to do it. These people obviously find it taxing to their delicate nature. Fk them.
It is what has made the NHL fun for years. The issue is shorten the season and then it ain't a grind from the POV of the finalists being there after the parade
Yeah thats actually pretty strange, as a man born in the early 90s i've always held Saku as one of the greats in the NHL, i guess people are quick to forget nowadays. His brother Mikko wasnt to shabby either.
As a Blues fan my favorite part is… 31 other teams: “We would like to thank blah blah blah, this selection is dedicated to blah blah blah, to make our pick is HOFer blah blah blah, with the number X pick, the team selects player Y. The Blues: We select player Z.
I was there in-person for the first round and the show was incredible. They should really find a way to keep doing at least the first round at the Sphere.
That’s just 3 minutes to make a pick, there’s also about 3 minutes per team to bring the choice up on stage. Roughly 96 minutes for picks, 96 minutes for presentations - so expected time is about 200 minutes or about 3.5 hours. Which is about how long it ran.
Life long Detroiter here. Just look at the NFL draft we just had here in Detroit. We broke the attendence record and the NFL and City of Detroit had no idea how to handle all the people. Literally tens if thousands of young people not tied to football walked away that day wanting to learn more. It's never a good move to separate fans from a sport.
Yeah, but none of the team staff were in Detroit -- they were all back the team HQ's. If that's the route the NHL goes then I'm not mad about it. The NFL draft hasn't been "in person" for forever.
What do fans have to do with sports they are just spectators they don't actually do anything for the league... The NHL is the players and the management. And they deserve an off season! The fans will survive til next season starts...
@@v4v819the fans run the sport. Its like saying "customers dont run the store, the employees do" YEAH BUT THE CUSTOMERS KEEP YOU ALIVE. Like when Atlanta Trashers collapsed. Not because of the players, but because revenue was kinda gone. And now Arizona is relocated too. Money is what makes the league and players. Fans are what make and give the money.
Never have I watched the NHL draft, and I likely never will. Much easier to read about it the next day, then wait a couple months for the season to start back up.
The whole idea of the draft is amazing and fun! It's unique to north American sports and should have some pomp and circumstance. If its too close to the playoffs then push it a few weeks out.
My first thought was "I'm surprised the Ducks didn't try to trade the pick if they thought they could get him later" but I'm happy they kept the pick and did the player a solid.
They have such a boring organization for such a fun intense sport. For example I want more suban lizzo jokes during playoffs. They really tried to mimic a tnt NBA crew this playoffs which I appreciated. But still.
Logan Thompson asked for a trade - loves Vegas but wants to be a #1 goaltender. Met him today after the signing and he was great - took time to take a picture with my son. We’ll miss him here. Still cool he took time to sign autographs.
They’re not doing a zoom call for the ENTIRE NHL draft. It’s only team personnel that are doing this remotely. Just look up the NBA and NFL Drafts, and you’ll understand why they’re “decentralizing”. I still prefer the current model for the NHL, but whatever. Seriously, people, do some research before spreading false information.
The same way Bettman goes from NBC sports where with your cable package you got to see a lot of games. To going to TNT and ESPN where you see 1 game a week. That's Gary for you. If it doesn't make sense for the FANS, he is all for it.
I think it's just the teams that aren't going to the draft, like the GMs and such, the same as in other leagues. I don't think they're getting rid of the in person draft entirely
You’re correct. It’s literally just the team war rooms. I wish people actually read the details before posting videos and comments that spread false information. If you’ve seen a NFL and NBA draft, both drafts are “decentralized” and yet fans still show up, players show up IN PERSON, and random arenas and venues still get to host the draft events. Relax. The fans will still get to experience it
There is talk that they won't be moving away from in person drafts since the teams that wanted to do that are having second thoughts. There was an NBA exec at the NHL draft and a hab reporter asked him what he thought and he said the NHL draft is way more exciting then what the NBA does and he wouldn't move away from this format. The guy who is reporting this is Arpon Basu, and Athletic writer for the Habs and he has been talking with the GM's. Another thing he pointed out that the NHL doesn't have an event where they all meet to discuss ideas and this is actually a good venue to do it. The real reason as to why so many GM's don't want in person drafts previously is that it was so close to Free Agency. Free Agency starts on July 1st. So they feel that they have so little time to prepare for it and don't want to travel if they can avoid it. Now though some are reconsidering.
I know the in-person draft events will continue no matter what. But I am also in favor of the NHL reconsidering. It’s so much better when the entire NHL community is gathered in one setting for this draft. It makes the experience more real, and you get to hear all of the rumors and suspense. I love what Sphere did to amplify the experience!
As a hawks fan, I thought we really should’ve picked Demidov. Levshunov (I hope that’s how you spell it) is still really good tho and I can’t wait to see what he brings!
In my head, I imagine the Smiths (Utah) calling up Craig Conroy (Calgary) and saying "I'm going to pick Tij. What are you willing to give up to stop me?" Followed up with "That's not enough" and finally "Alright. Your loss."
Honestly, they probably picked him so they have trade leverage against us in the future. Really it made no sense for Utah to select Tij with some of the big names still available. And I'd argue Parekh is a way better option for the flames, especially with how reliant they've always been on offensive defensemen.
The NHL could avoid most problems by starting the season 3 or 4 weeks early. That way the season wraps up and there is more time for the draft. I think this Draft was really good, they didnt waste nearly as much time with intros and kept the picks pretty quick. Still room for improvement, but i think changing the format is a huge mistake
Celine suffers from stiff person syndrome that deeply impacts her rigidity and muscular strength as well as has impacts on speech. Not saying i didn't agree it was slow and tough to watch but devils Advocate, I do understand why it would take her so long and do feel for her
I think Chris Johnston or Elliotte Friedman said that the GMs only voted for a decentralized draft because that’s what the owners wanted them to vote for but that none of the GMs actually like that idea so it may still be centralized
Eck you missed the biggest news for Norwegians at the draft. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård being drafted by the Red Wings, and Stian Solberg being drafted 23rd OV by the Duck. This marks the first time any Norwegians was drafted in the first round, let alone two! Also there were no Swedes drafted in the first round this year.
My understanding of things is that the players and their families will still be at the event, just not the management teams. This will still be a fun, watchable event. Does anyone have info that is contrary to that?
@@jamesi6262I got it. It just struck me as funny. Also, few NHL fans attend the draft in person, relatively speaking. NHL attendance this season was 22.5 million people. Not sure how many attend the draft but it’s a few thousand. Even if the sphere hosted 30,000 NHL fans, that’s one tenth of one percent of fans being affected. As fun as the draft may be, the vast majority of fans are unaffected by the change. Also teams draft parties will still happen and will likely be improved due the change.
That’s what I’ve been TRYING to tell people. But all they see is LAST IN PERSON DRAFT and they lose their minds. People, do some bleeping research! Have you seen the NFL and NBA drafts? Good grief. I wish they would have just kept it as is because I like the intimate experience for all teams, staffs, scouts, and front offices, but I’m just a fan, I don’t have a say. Thankfully, you understand.
Taking away the in person draft is a huge mistake in my opinion, its one of the steps and highlights for young players coming into the league, there have been some very iconic draft moments and i think every kid thats eligble for the draft feels its something they want to do, alot of players who have gotten drafted during the years have gone nowhere in their career after that, but i bet they still feel like "atleast i got drafted", its a good story to tell when youre older and now they're making the draft an unimportant zoom call.
"Too much traveling right after the playoffs" for the 2 GM's that make it to the finals maybe. You can't tell me every single one of the GM's and their staff are traveling to each round of the playoffs. A single flight with two or three management representatives and the player/person you want announcing the pick is all you need. There's no way that's "too much travel." Look how incredible the draft looked in the sphere, probably one of the nicest sports shows I've watched in a long time. They want to go from that, to a shitty webcam meeting with some animated graphics on the screen?
The travel is not the biggest problem, despite what this video says. Teams don't like having other teams be in their back pocket while they are trying to talk about secretive info. They would rather be in their war rooms.
@@Statsy10I think what gets me is when they say the last “in person” NHL draft, they’re ONLY referring to the team war rooms, NOT THE ENTIRE SPECTACLE! I am laughing that some people are so literal about everything.
The real reason is probably because the live draft is too expensive. Holding it in the Las Vegas sphere must have cost a fortune. Even the NBA didn’t go that crazy with their venue, and they make way more money.
The Draft should still be live. But this is what happens when the Final ends like 5 days before free agency and the draft. The playoffs take too long. Started later this year than usual.
If I had to honestly guess, it's a business tactic to skip a few years, save some cash, and generate bonus enthusiasm about the draft, simply because we haven't had one in a while. They will probably bring it back in 3 or 4 years. I doubt enough people are watching it to make it profitable, so they are doing this to try to get that number above $0 for the NHL and the owners. They probably don't see it as super critical to the game, and having a big TV event in a random venue is expensive every year. There are a lot of reasons for them to stop doing it, financially. I am a huge hockey fan, an SJ Sharks fan, and even I did not tune in live. They basically got $0 from me, a mega-fan that watches almost every team. I saw a couple ads in the borders of the screen as I fastforwarded through the draft and send my brother and dad a clip of the first OA with my phone. The league got absolutely NOTHING from me, besides minor engagement. The league has an argument to stop doing it.
Caps GM was saying to press he would vote for how it was done this year if he could change his vote. Maybe it’ll catch on. Def the most watchable draft in a long while.
The only thing I get excited about at the draft is when I hear, " we have a trade". Then get disappointed when it's a trade for 1 pick vs 2 picks. I've stopped watching the draft years ago, cause it's all about hype. Most players are a few years away, and most will never be in the NHL.
Pretty sure you're wrong on this. I believe the NHL front offices are going remote, however the players are still going to be at a draft event like how it's done every year
As a capitals/panthers fan i’m really annoyed with NHL right now. And it’s really pissing me off how they are making up things to get in NHL fans, mad in drafting.
This is my first time hearing that this is the last in person draft, every single GM needs fired as well as that damn commissioner. God forbid people do anything in person anymore. What a fucking joke.
Considering it took them 2 flippin hours to get through 14 picks, I honestly welcome the Draft no longer being an in person thing. The NHL has no idea how to make their events fun anyway so it's not like much will be lost and it should, hopefully, save hours of wasted time.
idk I never really liked watching the draft so not to sad to see the in person draft go, I've found the draft doesn't really mean much its what you do with your talent afterwards.
I mean they refuse to go after a younger audience by collaborating with certain popular social media groups. But a few more pride nights might bring in a fan or two
I enjoy the draft but it's so darn bloated on day one. You can get through 7 rounds on day two with his tabs hour and a half extra. You could still have a nice spectical if you kept it to two hours
I was lamenting the love draft this year as it was happening. So what to expect next year? The prospects are all invited to an arena and the GM’s just call in via zoom? Garbage.
The majority of the video was talking about the draft. Where’s the explanation of why the NHL is allergic to fun? I know you said that they are not going to do in person drafts anymore but that’s it. The rest of the video was about the draft. Aren’t there other reasons why the NHL is “allergic to fun?”
for the first time ever I disagree, I think it is better for players and spectators to have the players be drafted while they are at home surrounded by their loved ones, focusing around their journey to the NHL, it's a big moment for them and if it were me, I'd rather celebrate with close family and friends instead of being super formal and going to a random city just to put on a jersey and a hat.
I don't know if I'd classify a draft as "fun" but maybe it is for super nerds. I think I'd be super bored sitting at a draft for any sport. I don't follow youth hockey or whatever, so I don't know any of these children.
Later round steal was Romani... This kids been lighting the net up sinve he was 10 Years old Anthony Romani would have went Top 10 1 year agao yet Vancouver drafted him 181st Overall Fun fact..Celebrini cant cheer for his favorite team anymore...Canucks
The shortsidedness of the league to make this decision is INSANE. Yes, it's a lot of spectable and probably unnecessary, but it promotes your sport. If anything, they should be trying to grow the draft into an event, just like the NFL and the NBA. Just wow.
That’s literally all they’re doing is going with the NFL and NBA model. I don’t get why people think the whole event is getting ditched for a boring a** Zoom call. That to me is the most comical narrative I’ve ever seen.
i was hoping for edmonton to the win the cup, not because i wanted the oilers to win, but because a canadian team winning might force Bettman to resign as commissioner.
Not much is changing, just the team war rooms are moving remotely. I’m baffled people assume it’s the whole draft going to zoom. It’s hilarious. However, I hope the NHL reconsiders only because it’s way better to have the executives and scouts enjoying their moment.
ESPN coverage was horrible. 3 Chicks who didn't know shit and interviews like it I was watching the view, not analysis of who the player will be. Poor Kevin Weeks
Can we PLEASE once and for all stop overreacting!!! The only thing changing moving forward is that team personnel are moving their war teams to remote locations. Everything else will remain mostly the same based on the understanding I’m getting with this change. If you’ve seen the NBA and NFL drafts, it’s similar to that… Do I think it’s better? No, I like the way it’s currently set up because of the intimate interactions. But please stop with the panic. Fans will continue to attend these draft “events”, and the first round (at the very least) will continue to be a prime event.
They should just get rid of the draft. It encourages tanking. Players should sign with teams that they want to play with. I don't care about fairness when all of these franchises are worth hundreds of millions of dollars and aee owned by billionaires.
