The Nicest Thing I’ve Ever Built | 100 Hour Hand Tool Cabinet Build

This wall mounted tool cabinet was built almost entirely with the hand tools it houses. This project took over 100 hours and includes 50+ hand cut dovetails, 35+ magnets, 100+ brass slotted screws, and countless drops of blood, sweat, and tears.
Now that the project is complete, I can confidently say this is the nicest thing I've ever built.
Behind the swinging panel inside of the right-hand door are some of my grandfather's old tools, including his slide rules. I don't use these tools often, but chose to mount them in my cabinet to honor his memory.
The carcass, drawer fronts, and tool mounts are made of African mahogany. The back panels and plane till are baltic birch plywood, and the front panel has a maple veneer. The drawer sides and backs are solid maple, and the bottoms are plywood. The finish used on the carcass is Arm-R-Seal wipe on polyurethane (satin), while I used spray-on lacquer for the tool mounts.
The drawers are through-dovetailed, and the drawer fronts are cut from a single piece of mahogany to create a continuous grain appearance across all three drawers. The cabinet is mounted to the wall with two large lag bolts (hidden behind the saw till and plane till) which are driven into studs.
I do not have plans for this build, as I designed it on pencil and paper only, specifically to fit these tools. However, I can provide the rough dimensions. The cabinet is approximately 25" wide, 30" tall, the center section is almost 8" deep, and the doors are around 4" deep.
I am currently finishing a separate video dedicated to the saw till, which I plan to post to this channel soon.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to subscribe if you like content like this!

After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans ru-vid.comUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!

Wood can exhibit weakness or reduced strength due to various factors. Some common reasons for wood to become weak include: Moisture: Wood is highly susceptible to moisture absorption, which can lead to swelling, warping, and decay. When wood absorbs water, it can lose its structural integrity and become weak. Decay: Wood is prone to decay when exposed to fungi, bacteria, or insects that break down its cellular structure. Decay can significantly weaken the wood, making it more brittle and less able to bear loads. Insect infestation: Wood-boring insects such as termites, beetles, and carpenter ants can tunnel through the wood, compromising its strength and structural integrity. Aging: Over time, wood can naturally degrade due to exposure to environmental factors like sunlight, temperature changes, and oxygen. This aging process can cause wood to become weaker and more prone to damage. Knots: Knots are areas where branches grew out of the trunk, creating a localized disruption in the wood grain. Knots can weaken the wood since they often have different density and strength characteristics than the surrounding wood. Defects and damage: Wood can develop defects or sustain damage from impacts, stresses, or improper handling. These defects, such as cracks, splits, or checks, can weaken the wood and compromise its load-bearing capacity. Poor quality or low-density wood: The quality of wood can vary based on factors like the tree species, growth conditions, and harvesting methods. Low-density wood or wood with inherent structural flaws can be weaker than high-quality, dense wood. Improper drying: If wood is not properly dried before use, it may retain moisture, leading to dimensional instability and reduced strength. The internal stresses caused by uneven drying can result in warping, twisting, or cracking, making the wood weaker. It's worth noting that the strength of wood can also depend on its specific species, density, and the direction in which forces are applied. Different types of wood have varying inherent strengths and properties.

In the late 90s the publishers of the magazine Fine Woodworking did print run of the photo( as a poster) of the original magnificent tool cabinet featured in this vid . I purchased a qty , had them framed and gave them to my customers . I have always wished for the skills shown in the photograph and this vid

That was amazing! Putting the tools in their proper place at the end must have felt so good. Watching the video was very relaxing, almost soothing. I loved that there was no music, no commentary, no noise, just working. Brilliant!

It goes without saying that it's absolutely beautiful work. If I might make a small suggestion though , I would put drawerfronts on those three bottom drawers. It would look better

@@dkbuilds Personal taste is always a factor. However, having through dovetails on drawers inside a case, and covered when the doors are closed, is a very traditional method. I do the exact same thing. I think you made a good choice. BTW, you chose an excellent teacher. Have attended one of his PHP schools? And if so, thank you for your service. Excellent video and cabinet.

@@joew694 Thank you for your input Joe! I have not attended one of Rob's schools, and I am just a civilian. I am a big supporter of his purple heart project though and try to donate when I am able. I'm glad you liked my video :)
