everybody laughs at this story but it's a miracle Spade wasn't killed. if that psycho assistant had made his way to that shotgun before David did, we'd speak about him the way we do about Phil Hartman. the more you hear about the story, the less funny it is.

oh man, you are a really good storyteller. That is a horrifying story...humor heals.

David is an amazing storyteller, even though the story was terrifying he was able to slide in a few jokes to keep the focus and reinvigorate interest. He’s truly talented.

For those wondering: The more full story, and court docs paint a picture that The Assistant had mental illness problems and was very high on cocaine at the time. On Maron's podcast, Spade described the assistant's behavior as increasingly erratic and unprofessional leading up to the incident and finally the snap came after Spade failed to get him a specific part in Joe Dirt.

Jeez David must be a pretty tough little sh** to fight off a guy that big. Glad he's still with us. "Emperor's New Groove" is getting recognized as one of Disney's best and funniest animated films.

So here's a crazy story - I met Spade's personal assistant about five years ago in LA. (The same guy he's talking about in this clip.) Thing is, at the time I didn't know who he was - a few months later I was listening to Spade's interview on Marc Maron, and he told the story and when he said the guy's name, I thought nothing of it... but then he mentioned his real first name (he used to go by a nickname in the 90s), which I thought sounded familiar. I googled him, and sure enough, it was the guy I met while visiting a friend on the set of a TV show. Was around him quite a bit and he was actually in a supervisory position which is kind of amazing to me given his history. He still works in LA, in the industry, but no longer uses the name Skippy (probably how he was able to re-enter the industry without the baggage following him?). He is a BIG guy and if I were Spade, I can only imagine how scary that must have been.

the other time or two ive heard him tell this story, i just think of all the other people out there that would be in PTSD after something like that and that no one would ever bring it up like a casual question.

Fuck..... how he tells the story, as someone who has had to fight for his life before in a somewhat similar situation, I can tell that this is real. And you can also tell that david spade is the kind of guy that is at his best when all of the cards are stacked against him. By all accounts, he should have been killed during this encounter, but sometimes life has a plan for you. This gives me flashbacks to what happened to me, so I understand the seriousness and the trauma, but thank god that this man who has dedicated his life to entertaining us and relieving us of our dark moments in which laughter is not a realistic emotion, is still alive after this and still as funny as ever. God bless mr. Spade and great job on the new show. Looks like it will be on for a good while.

I just came from "David Spade: Take The Hit" and the end sequence shows David exiting through the whole club with a giant 300-lb dude by his side (obviously his bodyguard/assistant). From reading these Comments, I believe that THAT big dude is the guy David is talking about - David Malloy aka Skippy. (He's even in the credits.) And he says here that he vets his assistants on the basis that he can take them in a fight. I'm presuming he adopted that stance AFTER Malloy was out of his employ...

It bugs me how in all these interviews when David talks about this, the hosts try to make it humorous... Like, David just got done talking about how someone who he thought was a friend tried to murder him in his sleep and later committed suicide, and the host starts immediately cracking jokes, wtf?

That howard stern guy should probably watch a few of these interviews so that he can learn how to let the guest actually answer a question that was asked. And heck, maybe he will pick up a few tips on actually being funny as well.

Once i was hitchhiking and a guy pulled a gun on me but while driving down a dirt road hed loose the steering wheel. I grabbed the gun shot him several times. The vehicle sped into tree with me going through the windshield. I walked broken glass in my face to the road got another ride home.

The assistant’s name was Skippy. I kid you not.

The assistant was mad that David gave the gas station attendant role in Joe Dirt to Kevin Nealon instead of him. 🤪

His Assistant did that because he didn't get the role that went to kid Rock and Joe dirt. However after seeing kid Rock's acting chops David knew he was a true thesbian of the silver screen. He definitely made the right choice
