One of the funniest things I've seen, was Gretzky getting punched by Dave Taylor. The happiness in Bob Millers voice had me laughing. Gretzky looked like he was dead at for a couple of seconds.
Gretzky later that night told the NHL “I’m done if this type of nonsense happens again”He was never hit again 😂 He had amazing vision, I’m sure it was extremely hard to hit him clean, it happened but not too often.
He was adueshbag the greatest hockey player I ever saw by far was Bobby Orr Gordimer Howe and Maurice Richard wernybad either they were hockey players they did it all and when they got hit they got up went and hit the guy hit them and didn’t have there teams protect them they fought whomever hit them they weren’t crybaby’s like gretsky who liked to tap bad ran behind someone everytime someone offered to oblige there yapping like gretsky did
yeah he's been hit really hard a few times. once knocked out of the playoffs, once missed half a season. Still though, he was notoriously difficult to hit, if you listen to the interviews of ppl he has played against.
The hit was clean. Gretz had his head down which, to be clear, almost NEVER happened. Shortly after this Bill McCreary just disappeared. Not that he was a top level guy to be honest. But his disappearance from the game after this is a little suspicious.
There's absolutely nothing suspicious about an injury replacement being sent back to minor leagues where he belonged. A forward with one goal in 12 NHL games didn't exactly do much to stay in the NHL.
Five and a game for that comment, son. Possible sussy too. Don’t you know that in today’s day and age we have to make rules to protect all the stupid people? Tsk tsk.
@@frankd2056This was Bill McCreary Jr.'s second game in the NHL and he would play 10 more including another against Gretzky and the Oilers before being returned to the minors after having scored a single goal in 12 games.
Edmonton's 24: The Man With No Name. Also: Toronto has a 99 too! Looked it up and now I know that 3 players have used 99: Gretzky, Paiement and Dudley in the Jets. Thought it was only Wayne for some reason.
I got hit like that playing baseball once. Dude that ran me over was 6'7. We were both chasing a fly ball, and next thing i knew i was on my back looking at the stars.
Your lost! People who work in industry risk life and limb for minimum $. And your worried about a guy making millions? Your why hockey is dead and will never recover. Snowflakes crying about violence.

The drama by the announcer is comical. After the hit, Gretzky momentarily gets to his knees and then turns over and lays on his back to get his bearings and the announcer states at this point "he's out." Too funny.
#99 did more than score goals!! He made the players around better because of his mere presence whether it was scoring or passing. That mere presence alone allowed other players to shine on the ice.
That is the stupidest comment ever!! Gordie Howe protected himself!!! He was one of the most feared players ever!! Nobody messed with him really,check-out the Lou Fontanato fight!!! And Terrible Ted Lindsay watched his back! That is the only difference Gretzky didn't have the fighting in his arsenal!! Some people say that's what makes Gordie the greatest ,the fighting!!!
And in the present day players like McDavid, Mathews, etc can figure skate their way to the net because you're absolutely forbidden to breath on them. Gretz was a hell of a lot tougher than most peo0le give him credit for. Played 20 years basically free of imjury.
The people who play the current game are soft. The game is soft. I love early and mid 90's hockey the most. The best mix of skill and speed and brutality. Exactly what hockey should be.
@@trog.lodyte close to this level. What part of The Great One don't you get. This is a World Class Athlete playing the fastest game on earth at the highest level possible. For decades. OMG, Do you think he had weak ankles or something. Lol.
Gretzky has never played a single game that Crosby and Ovi play each night. Not a single one. Gretzky was the hockey version of the Big Mac that McDonalds was introducing to various areas of the USA.
I won't make my opinion on Gretzky to be known here because I don't want to get thousand of trolls attacking me. Instead, I will tell you a short story. After big win in the finals of our beer league (advanced category but still just beer league), the ref who called our finals stopped by when we're were pouring beer and stuff. Turned out he was actually an NHL ref. So somebody asked him about Gretzky "What do you think if him?" He replied: The guy was an average skater, average shot, small, skinny, rather forgettable stature. But what he was better at than everyone else ever, was how he knew exactly what's going on on the ice at any given moment. His ice awareness was off the charts. He was once skating by me bent over like he always does while skating the puck. As he goes by me, he snaps at me - they've got 6 men - while he keeps going, never seemingly raising his head as he drives the puck. I looked around, and sure enough, they (the other team) had six men on the ice. It was my job to see it first and call it, and he made me feel this small." I don't remember the ref's name, he always did some higher level beer league at the end of summer before the NHL was on, and he drew lot of respect from everyone on the ice. We all knew he's knows his shit and games called by him were always the best games. That's about 23 years back. But I will always remember that thing he said about Gretz.
Good grief. Get a life. Of course Crosby and Ovenchkin can do things Gretzky. But he could do things they couldn’t-and in those things he’s in a different universe than those guys. And Ovechkin is a one-trick pony. Park his ass on the top of the left circle and wait for a teammate to pass him the puck for a one-timer. He has NO playmaking ability.
@@TheNorgate I had no idea you were an icecapades veteran ... that explains everything ... peplinski & semenko still shudder when talking about their icecapades try-outs - they didn't make it, so they went to the nhl ....
Here you see proof that #99 would not have survived - let alone excelled - during the "Original Six" era. Each team had at least one guy who hit like that regularly.
He was extremely hard to get a good hit on. That’s one of the reasons he didn’t get hit much. Trying to hit him was like going after a bag of confetti and when you missed you hurt yourself. He was a master of avoiding hits. Had too. Wasn’t big enough to take em. One of the smartest players ever.
@@That90sShow I was talking about the business, not the sport. Big difference. Your use of the word “dummy” clearly shows your 55-65 iq range. Stop talking.
I love the helmutless years..If you were in the NHL prior to 1979 you weren't required to wear a helmut..All players coming into the league after 1979 were required to wear them..I just read the Craig MacTavish was the last player to not wear one in 1997..That's kinda nuts..I also remember when goalies didn't have to wear masks..That would be suicidal today
Yup. I looked at the game's date and realized that was the same day I first got _married._ Gretzky went on to his legendary career, and I wound up in the penalty box.
Once clutching and grabbing started in the mid to late 80’s, he was safer from open ice hits and his enforcer mcsorley followed him and took out whoever would go after him. But Gretzky’s numbers went down too…
@@That90sShow - right lol, that’s why Gretzky beat Mario by 74 points in 1986 and by 76 points in 1987? And had a much better PPG average than Mario in 1988?
@@michaelgriffiths8068 87-88 season Mario took over. The goalies were getting stronger and Wayne relied on snipers on his team for assists. Mario only lost out on the Art Ross when playing short seasons because of injury. Lemieux was proving his dominance in the butterfly era, with lighter pads and stronger goalies. Gretzky couldn't beat the goalies like the days from 1979- 1985....the WHA expansion diving donkey stand-up goalie era.
Gretzky was the reason why the NHL is better today. The Islanders were Royally pissed and other long time American owners. The audacity that a Canadian team was winning at the gate admissions and Stanley Cup in a few years after being a WHA expansion team. They had to sell Gretzky to LA and sell the game or the league wouldn't be taken seriously, just another CFL.
McCreary Jr. played 10 more games in the NHL, including the following night where he would pick up his only goal against the Flames and another game against Gretzky and the Oilers a couple of weeks later. He never became a referee, that was his cousin.
Damn, that doesn't even look close to a clean hit, even for the era, which I'm pretty sure I still remember well.I do remember a widespread sentiment among the fans of opposing teams that what Gretzky was doing was not proper Canadian hockey, and therefore somehow unfair, and some actually advocated "taking him out" like that to teach him respect...I didn't realize that anyone came that close to doing it.
He happened to be alright meanwhile Lindros gets hit much harder and from then on everyone says he needs to learn to play with his head up. I am glad Gretzky was alright so we could see many years of greatness.
@@toddmurphy390 wow I played for several years until a knee injury forced me to stop. Played with a guy like Wayne is and he was just as soft. Took him out one game with a nice big hit, as he had his head down with the puck, heading to the net. Never played the same after that hit.
@@everydaycarrycanada951 i am sure you were on your way. My eyes just rolled so far back in my head I was almost taken out forever. Gretzky didn’t have the size to go around playing tough. Anyone who plays any amount of hockey usually gets hit like that eventually. I played with and against a few guys that were in the mood of Gretzky but not as good obviously 🙄. They all made their teams better. Turns out body checks alone can’t score goals.
