Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers are in a full blown nightmare. Just two weeks into the season, the former first overall pick has already been benched, and the Panthers entire team looks abysmal. Who’s fault is it? How bad was Bryce? And did he deserve this? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 game film to analyze how bad the Carolina Panthers Quarterback Bryce Young has been through week 2.

As a Saints fan, the BY situation reminds me a lot of Drew Brees’s first few years with the Chargers. He struggled with many of the same issues with footwork and timing that you describe here because of his height and the fact that the Chargers coaches weren’t developing him as they should have. Then the year that they drafted Rivers he took it upon himself to learn how to navigate the pocket to create seeing lanes for himself which allowed him to fix the “tippy toes” issues and from there on he became the elite quarterback we remember. I think that working with Brees in the offseason would do wonders for Young, and getting out of Carolina and being a backup on a team that runs a Shanahan offense would probably help tremendously too much as it did for Sam Darnold.
@nomadicrain

@IanSane
@IanSane 41 минуту назад
What's odd is it isn't like Carolina was going off the board as he topped the list of every scout and analyst and if he didn't go number 1 he was expected to go number 2. But if he is deficient in multiple categories like that why was he projected so high? Sure, I can see a guy with those issues getting drafted as it's a long draft but first overall? On paper he sounds like a project but the first overall pick should be someone you can just slot right into the lineup. Usually you get some of those deficiencies with strengths in other categories to make up for it. First round QBs who can't read defenses often are super athletes. Poor athletes often have their draft stock go up if they already run NFL style offenses in college. But a guy who can't read the defense and is a weak athlete? What is the strength that justifies the high draft placement? Is the logic just "well he won the Heisman and he was the quarterback of one of the best teams"? You don't need professional scouts to draft based on that.

Bryce Young is like any mid or low quality QB. He requires almost elite talent around him to succeed. I know people said he elevated the players around him at Alabama but I don’t think so. Even though the players around him weren’t as good as some of the previous QBs, like Mac and Tua, they are still Alabama players, meaning they were still really good. It does appear the players around him elevated him and covered up his very obvious weaknesses. I would be curious how Bryce would have done at a lesser school with worse talent around him.

Carolina Panthers will only get better when Tepper is forced to sell the team.
@royalace2271
@royalace2271 2 часа назад
Tepper hasn't been great and his impatience and involving himself in football related decisions has been detrimental to the team entirely. He deserves much of the blame for the dysfunction and lack of success. I truly believed Frank Reich and his coaching staff wanted CJ Stroud but Tepper was enamored with Bryce and override his coaches decision. Trading valuable assets in order to pick 1st and drafting BY over CJ will haunt and set the Panthers back for years. I believe if the Panthers drafted CJ, they wouldn't make the playoffs but still be a very fun and competitive team that can win against anyone on a given night. The Panthers lack of talent across multiple skilled positions will hinder any playoff hopes but I believe with CJ at QB, he's able to elevate whatever talent is available, which allows the Panthers to focus primarily on skilled positions and protecting the QB. But with BY, the Panthers are back in square one and must focus on continuing to find their future franchise QB and build a competitive roster around that QB

Russel and Kyler leave the pocket a lot more because they are faster and more athletic. Baker is taller and like Brees is willing to stand in the pocket until the last possible second. Bill Parcells once said he only wanted qbs 6'2' or taller, and that played 4 years. The 4 year thing understandably had to change but just to use a round number to prove my point and his. Only 2 qbs under 6'2' have won a SB in the last 40 years. Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. You'd think if it took me only 5 min to research this, an NFL GM would have enough time to figure it out.

I'm a draft junkie and i told my friends(Bama fans) that i absolutely did not like Bryce in Alabama and especially not as a prospect, and they were furious. He was always antsy in the pocket, always struggling and jumping to see over his OL, constantly getting desperate too fast. I'm curious to see why you place so much emphasis on a height (which really is not that short considering the average player in the NFL is 6'2 compared to a national average of 5'10, Bryce's height) when quarterbacks like Kyler Murray (5'10) and Russell Wilson (5'11) have found success and even tremendous success, with Wilson winning a super bowl. Sure, perhaps its not ideal and is a weakness, but Young's height is not what is preventing him from being great. Even if Young was 6'3, he likely would suffer from similar issues.

Or Young simply is not able to change. Benching him makes sense, because there is no point watching him suck and losing his confidence.
