I was a tot at the time, and don't remember Dennis James, but as I watch these gems, yeah, a real class act host and I am really diggin' his work. Dennis is so much more sincere than Bob Barker. Bob Barker always comes across as a stage act.
@@wschmrdr I think the story is that in the beginning Dennis James was going to be the host for the entire Price Is Right franchise as Bob Barker was still busy with Truth Or Consequences and originally didn't want to do Price Is Right but then changed his mind.
Well as a contestant that would be the case, but not exactly in the early days. I think 12 was generally the minimum age back then to attend with some exceptions but it all depended on the taping and the version (daytime/syndication).
Tubewings Actually, this was taped before the first daytime episode with the rainbow set was, so the Contestant's Row displays (and the Giant Price Tag's brown border) hadn't been changed yet.
+UNCJerry77 I think they kept using the orange displays on the night show while they used the "rainbow set" on the daytime show. I can't say for sure because I was only four years old when this aired.
Dennis always hosted this show like his car was outside double-parked. Come on come on come on!!! He was always quick quick quick! I'm surprised he didn't make the show play all quicky games, he seemed extra eager for the showcases all the time...C'mon c'mon c'mon!!! I remember Don Rickles once saying to Johnny Carson "You're acting like Dennis James and I'm a bad contestant." LOL C'mon!
I was only 12 years old when this episode was recorded. I always noticed back then the night time price is right, the prizes cost more than the daytime. Seeing that Trip to Quebec City made me think about when I went there along time ago. This is still a great show.
19:28 - Dian did not have the trademark Price is Right handflip correct. Her hands are pointed down and not up as seen here. She would mention getting the "S-flip" wrong in her early days, even slapping her hand, while doing the models' interview on Vicki Lawrence's talk show shortly before she left in 1993.
Diane in a brown wig means this must be early indeed for her, since the reason she had the wig was to fool people into believing she was Anitra (who was herself on a sabbatical at the time). Before November 1975, in any case, since by the first hour-long daytime shows Dian had ditched the wig (and the real Anitra was back on the air)
I'm honestly surprised she just didn't go with her actual hair color- seeing her roots thought her tenure. Although her hair style after going blonde was still a mild version of this.
always liked that music cue from the jet ski prize. Sometimes I wish they would recirculate some of those old music bits on Carey's version. Those new ones sort of sound generic and lame.
And I remember watching both the daytime and nighttime Price is Right on WKYT Channel 27 in Lexington, where, back in the 70’s, WKYT held a popular promotion dubbed “TPIR Wednesdays on TV-27.”
WLKY also aired the Nighttime Price is Right with Dennis James every Friday night at 7:30, and WLEX and WAVE 3 carried the Tom Kennedy Nighttime Price is Right every weeknight at 7:30 before WAVE 3 replaced it with The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime with the late Jim Lange, who previously hosted The New $100,000 Name That Tune, which also aired on WAVE 3 every weeknight at 7:30.
Organs were sure popular in the 70's! I loved to play my grannies and before I knew it, my mom was making me take organ lessons. And at 14! I was most disappointed when my instructor wouldn't teach me any Rufas & Chaka Khan "melodies"! 😂
One thing was missing from the credits: "A VIACOM ENTERPRISES PRESENTATION"! Also, there were no show credits, which was kind of unusual for a weekly syndicated game show!
I'm not crazy about most government things but you can thank the FCC for in 1970 giving the 6:30/7:30 time slot back to the local stations. .....They THOUGHT that they were going to use the time for community programming, THANK GOD THEY WERE WRONG!!
+James Bonnen Not exactly. The networks still can't offer network programming in that time slot. What they were allowed to do as of 1996, but not previously, is syndicate shows. That's what made it possible for CBS to buy King World and become the distributor of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, but they're still not network programs.
Fox isn't covered by the same regulations as CBS, NBC and ABC. The definition of a network is that it distributes more than 15 hours a week of regularly scheduled national programming. Fox does exactly 15 - if they programmed the 10 PM Eastern Time hour, they would be considered a network and they couldn't put anything on at 7:30 except on Sundays.
Anybody see the future contestant Martha sitting behind the girl that was helping her try to win the car. In a future episode of NTPIR, she wins a $6201 car herself playing ANY NUMBER, but participates in a DBLE OVR showcase.
This may have been the first game (now with the 'Any Number' wordmark on the top) of this kind played since the aforementioned Martha won the $6,000 car but the show could not dis-play (at least on TV) the incomplete prices of the sailboat or the piggy bank that would have otherwise been known. Google is trying!
I Think This Is The Last Time You Would See Contestant's Row With That Color Cause In Late October Is When The Colored ones Debuted During The Trial Hour
Maureen won $9524 in prizes on her showcase, Phyllis looks amazing in a peach bikini at the 19:07, 20:28 marks and Dian Parkinson is a stunning brunette in this 1975 Price is Right classic!
When did they change from the original orange displays to the multi-color ones that they still use today? I seem to remember that the James version hung on to the orange displays while the Barker version moved to the multi-color ones when they moved to one hour? I was four years old when this aired, so my memory might be a little foggy.
I don't know what the production number for this episode is, but by #125N (which is on RU-vid), the James version switched to the multi-colored Contestants Row. Also, the switch on the Barker version occurred when the show moved from its afternoon timeslot to the morning timeslot (in August of 1975, two and a half months before the show expanded to a full hour).
I always thought that the night time price is right episodes were great. I was only 12 years old during this episode. Seeing Dianne Parkinson, makes me wonder what year did she start being on the price is right. Seeing that trip to Quebec City, reminded me that went there along time ago. Prices were more on the night time, than the daytime back then. I enjoyed watching both of them anyway. Still a great game show today 👍.
James Bonnen I think 300 total over eight years - I think Stu posted what may be Dennis' last taped show in 1977 and it was 193N meaning Bob taped the remaining 107 over the final three years of nighttime.
Does anyone have the following featuring Dennis James as host: *) The infamous "There Goes Fritz" episode from 1976 in which Janice Pennington breaks down in tears backstage following the Cliff Hangers game (Fritz was the name of her then-boyfriend whom disappeared while mountain climbing). *)Any episodes of the daytime 1974-75 version of Name That Tune. I doubt there's a copy available but it would be priceless to see.
Chris Baker I know I'm way late to this, but it wasn't a joke. Dennis wasn't aware that Fritz had disappeared shortly before the first nighttime taping with Cliff Hangers, and his naming of the mountain climber was probably a coincidence. ...On the other hand, it's possible that never happened at all. When the official TPIR RU-vid channel uploaded clips of the game's debut a few years ago, Janice could be seen walking behind the game board right as Bob says "Cliff Hangers" for the first time.
I have to wonder in the 300 nighttime episodes that were hosted by Dennis James (1972-77) and Bob Barker (1977-80), how many did each man host in the 8 years it was aired?
TimBoud2012, That plus Bob Barker's request that no shows with fur coats as prizes to be aired on GSN. That might change now that Bob is no longer on the show anymore and that there is debate on whether or not the Dennis James hosted episodes should be relieved from the ban since it was Barker, not James, that imposed the fur coat ban.
Gotta love those nighttime showcases. I just loved everything about Price in the late ‘70s, both daytime and nighttime. I keep forgetting that Dian was a brunette back then. Could’ve been a wig. I wonder what happened to Phyllis at the end? I guess they didn’t have anything for her to cover up with. 😂😂. Anybody know what Phyllis’s last name is? 🤔🤔
Dian wore a brunette wig to look like Anitra while she was away and was filling in for Anitra. When Anitra came back, Dian didn’t use the brunette wig anymore showing her natural blonde hair.
Wow, the only thing more jarring than Dian's brunette wig is the set on this episode. Can you say juxtaposition? Speaking of wow, that's the most heartbreaking way you could ever get screwed over on Grocery Game! As soon as I saw that she was a penny short, I knew there was no way she could possibly win.
