Nice! I've lived in Japan for over 14 years and I never bothered to do much research on these, even though I have a few. Now I don't have to! 3 minutes very well spent! Thank you.
Kelsey you are doing a great thing by educating people about retro gaming from Japan. Everyone on youtube is really NES orientated only in their retro love and concerned with what 'made it stateside'. I enjoy what you bring to Metal Jesus and I know your channel is going to be really different from the rest. This insight is much needed. I've seen these cartridges on the net and always wondered about them, I never have seen the Gameboy ones. Thank you! Great work. Love the little intro!
I'm so used to youtubers having a "credits" sequence with partners and/or teasing for other videos, I thought my connection had a problem. Hah. Great video ! It's so crazy to think that Nintendo which is seen as the late bloomer of online markets, was actually super early.
This was awesome. i just came from the MetalJesusRocks 3ds buying guide and saw you had a channel. aside from it being a game-related channel, i wasn't sure what to specifically expect from it but i'm really glad it's got some "gaming history" content going on, especialy something like this which i've never heard of. I can't wait to see what else you put out. sweet video
Probably your best video so far, very informative and you seem more comfortable in front of the camera. If you're still reading off a script it's harder to tell now too, seems more natural and off the cuff
The thing that was interesting to me was they did this several years before with the original disk drive. You could go to a store and at kiosk get your floppies written and rewritten with games for a discounted price.
very cool service, if they do this with the 3ds or maybe the switch (since they're both use cartridges) that would be a great "digital only games" alternative (since you can have a physical version of your digital only game) but at the same time the collector value would go down since basically it is just a blank cartridge with no art or game manual. great video and also I love the wonderswan intro, so cool!
I know you from MJRs videos and allways liked you more than all his other guests and even himself. Now i've finally found your channel. Thanks for this great Video. greetings from germany. ^-^
Your videos are fantastic! I can definitely see this channel getting a decent amount of subscribers in the future. Can't wait for future videos, and I hope this channel gets popular.
love the vintage games! gameboy was probably most important to me cause it was like the equivalent of today's laptops/tablets it's something I could call my very own! keep up the awesome vids! (pls more Gameboy stuff!)
Great video and a great idea. This would still work very well today, but I suppose you have the option to buy from an online store and just save the game on your hard drive. Having said that they would probably be smaller games are older ones that take up less space, so an idea like this or you could go in and by a full game on a media that allows you to change it when you are finished would be a great option.
Fun Fact: The Game Boy Memory Flash cart contains an unused Game Boy Printer graphic, a Yoshi figurine and a few other things such as a diagnostic test menu to test the flash cart. Also, it is the game compatible with the Super Game Boy that sets up DATA_SND, and a JUMP routine that will jump to your selected game's bank. This was done to reset the SGB/SGB2 BIOS to load the new game, as it does on the GB/GBC modes.
There was a very limited release of Fire Emblem Thracia 776 on a Nintendo Power cartridge in a limited edition Deluxe Pack that looked like a treasure chest that you could only order from Nintendo themselves I believe. And then there was a very limited cartridge (non-nintendo power) release the year after and I believe only 70,000 units were made of this game. As far as I recall this particular cartridge release was the last 1st/2nd party Nintendo release for the system in 2000 (I think I read that in a RPG magazine around 2001 that I must still have somewhere). I've seen on rare occasions copies of this game popping up on ebay for ludicrous prices, but never saw the full limited edition package with all its goodies. Even the limited cartridge release is insanely expensive. At any rate, while it's true that the game was made as an exclusive for the Nintendo Power service, it wasn't exclusive to it cause in 2000 they eventually made a few good old carts of it.
I had never heard of these. This was a really informative video. I was stationed in Japan about 5 years ago and used to go into Lawson's all time. They have some surprisingly random items there. Anyhow, great video!
Wow. I never knew about such wizardry! Thanks for this fun fact, Kelsey! These kiosks would've been the best thing ever here in America; being able to buy a "recorded copy" of a game for $30 rather than $70 for an official cartridge would've made it a lot easier on me during my middle school days, since I would save my lunch money to buy games ...
I find these at my local shop all the time, always loaded with the 'Derby Stallion' games. Was never quite sure what they were, great video! thank you.
It amazes me that even after all these years that the Internet exists and with so many people actively seeking out obscure devices/accessories like these, I still come across stuff I didn't even know existed like these cartridges or the Famicom modem. Thanks for these very interesting videos Kelsey!
Never heard of these Flash Cartridges. Thanks for informing us about these interesting facts. Great channel. You're awesome Kelsey! Greetings from Belgium.
Kelsey is so awesome, when I do finally manage to book some holidays from work, I will try to see if I can visit Seattle and visit the store she runs... :-) tickets gonna be expensive from London
You gettin really good at this Kel;) Keep em comin! Hade a few of thoose white SFC carts.....always fun with the lootery that is, what game will I get;)) ....
i was so confident this was going to be good that I hit that like button before watching! Kelsey, can you do a history segment for the nintendo switch?? (lol, I just want your take on it)
love your videos didn't even know this service existed I wish it would have been available out here in the US when I was a child it would've been awesome
Great video!! You've always been informative and interesting to listen to in Metal Jesus' videos, and still are here!! And that Wonderswan intro is awesome too!! Keep up your kick ass work!! :D
Didn't know of those flash carts. Cool video. You should make some kind copy and paste type of ending for your videos that points viewers to your other vids. It's easy and could score you some views. Good luck
Kelsey Lewin Sweet lord you are so astonishing beautiful. Every time a new video is uploaded my heart beats a little faster. 😻 i am such a fanboy. No offence you just rock my world.
I've seen games listed with (Nintendo Power) before, and had wondered what that was all about; I'd just assumed it to be a Japan-only promotion from the magazine, but this makes a lot more sense. This is quite interesting!
I noticed you have the Pokemon Master trainer board game in the background. I own it too with all the board pieces. My grandparents got it for me at Christmas in 1999. Tons of fun. Goes for a lot on Ebay.
I subscribed yesterday and it makes me happy to see you upload 😄 I love your content and that you just have fun with it can't wait to see what you'll talk about next ☺ PS . have you ever played Damganronpa ?
Very interesting stuff Kelsey 😎. Been watching your podcast too and think it's awesome you love RPGs as much as I do. You have to let me know what you think of Final Fantasy 15. Been loving that game 😍.
