The Super Nintendo LifeCycle Exertainment Bike -- An Exercise Bike for the SNES!

Exertainment is a tricky subject, because although my focus is on Nintendo and the Exertainment Bike in this video, they were far from the only (or earliest) company to combine digital games and exercise. I wanted to expand and talk about the unreleased Atari Puffer, or some of the equipment made without partnering with a video game giant like the Autodesk High Cycle, but I pretty quickly realized I could get stuck in entertainment research for a year if I were to cover too many things.
I won the bike in the live auction at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2017 from a friend of mine who runs an online store [ / tp4gamers ] and pretty quickly realized I have no room for it either...so it currently lives in the back room of my store.
Hope you guys enjoy this video!

I remember this, came here because of the new Nintendo Museum, but I saw the bike and was wondering why I remembered it. After seeing this I realized that’s because I had a rich friend who’s mother would buy him anything, and he was a huge Nintendo fan who had EVERYTHING! He only used it a few times before he got bored, you know because of the only having two games for play. Then he gave it to one of us much more poor friends, he really was a good guy. On another note: It seems like they expected this be installed in gyms. Instead of spin class, where someone’s builds you up by yelling at you, you get to play a video game. However, I’ve never seen any marketing for it that way. Edit: should’ve waited until the end of the end of the video. This kid did also have the famicon., was one of the first to have a computer forth at could “game” and in total this brings up way too many memories…

I'm just disappointed you can't use two bikes at the same time. One bike per console. :(
@thegreatboto
@thegreatboto 6 лет назад
If I understand how it all hooks up correctly, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to hook up a pair of bikes. You could use a phone splitter to connect both bikes since it's using a standard phone cable and the second bike's gadgets could hook into the second controller port instead of a standard controller. Though, I think by splitting the phone cable, you'd end up with each bike being told to add the same resistance at the same time. Rather than racing one another, it might end up feeling more like riding a two seater bike regardless of what's actually happening in the game.

I find it amazing that they had the technology back then to program in things like terrain affecting the bike, as well as two player. That's impressive given the time period. I always learn so much from your videos. Top notch production and so awesome how you find all these great facts and information. :D

Cool history lesson. I could see Nintendo using this idea again, attaching Joy Con to the exercise bike pedals and the tablet near the handlebars.

That would be cool and so cheap now a days for them. I wish they did that with a setup for mario cart. I have this made out of a wii thumb stick controller for a pc. www.cyberbiking.com/info.html

I did knew about the extertainment bike along with amezing games for it, but i never knew about the famicom fitness system,and am really amezed that the famicom version even required a modem to work, but considering it was made in 1988, it was lightyears ahead of it’s time because even 30 years later we still cannot buy a fitness equipment for our ps4 or xbox one. In short about these cool stuff ,it’s absolutely mind blowing!!!!

This was awesome. I love seeing quirky stuff like this and I'm sure that researching it was probably challenging since it's kind of an obscure topic. Learning about hardware like this or the Famicom TV or other oddities like that are some of my favorite videos on this channel.

Amazing how the quality of the videos are noticeably going up, better lighting, editing, image quality and Kelsey is speaking more naturally overtime. I like that you show this obscure hardware stuff and you also did a lot of research on the history behind it. This was almost a video game historian video!

I saw that unlicensed NES rig in a bike shop in Carson City. That was in the early 2000s, and at the time, I figured it was some relic from the 80s. I never would have guessed that it was only a few years old at that point.

There's an even more exciting game on a bike that doesn't require a Nintendo relic, it's called: *Go out on your bike outside and step on it!* Evade hitting kids, dogs, homeless people, tires, aliens, lava and other common road hazards through an infinite road, as vast as you can push, featuring night and day cycles, physical damage, realistic environments and more! Extra tracks available depending on your area, all included for free, no DLC purchase required! Great to see you again Kelsey! 👍

I played an arcade game at a bowling alley once. You would cycle and it powered an bike attached to a helicoptor blades on the screen. It was pretty cool. Another game I haven't seen again was an arcade game that was controlled by joysticks, moving robots in an arena. That was in a service station.

This concept could work today if done right. Not for home use but in gyms. With the technology we have now you could create some pretty immersive exercise/entertainment experiences possibly involving VR. You could even combine with an app to keep track of your status / achievements whichever gym you went to. That being said I've not been to a gym in years so this kinda stuff may already exist! :D
