I wish that I had known this years ago. I feel so bad that my poor fish died because I kept them too clean and didn't have any beneficial bacteria.
@kinglyzard
@kinglyzard 4 года назад
Beneficial bacteria can be obtained thru old nasty filter media from another tank, or they can be purchased bottled. When your NH4 begins to show, use bottled bacteria poured straight into the filter unit. Test again the following day; repeat treatment if necessary. Most fish need a completely cycled tank to remain healthy. Bottom feeders and algae eaters should be avoided until biofilm has built sufficiently. Your first fish should be a midwater or upper water fish. 1-4 fish at a time MAX. Allow time for your biofilm to grow to full capacity.

As I have studied chemistry I am aware of some of these processes. One kind of bacteria converts ammonia to nitrite. A second kind converts nitrite to nitrate. It's a two step process. Ammonia is toxic to fish. Nitrite is more toxic but nitrate is only weakly toxic. So if the ammonia is converted to nitrate then we can get rid of it more or less at our leisure. One way is to change or partially change the water. Another is growing green plants which are fertilized by nitrate. They take up nitrate and make proteins. I preferred partial changes and live plants.

when I had a fish that had fry and I wasn't prepared I set up a new tank by filling it half way with water from the main tank and put in decorations and substrate from the main tank as well as some filter floss in the new filter that had been in the main tank for a couple months. The fry did good as I kept up the water changes and are still doing good. I wanted to know your thoughts on this as it's not really cycling the new set up but kind of like the conditions of a huge water change.

Unfortunately, I had to quit due to money constraints and college, but I am planning to get back into it, once I move into my own apartment, as I currently live in a rented place and landlords generally frown upon the idea of aquariums, as they're afraid water might leak and flood the whole place.. I did the fish flake method in a 10 gallon and also ended up adding 1 guppy and it worked well, took about 2 months or so to get it cycled, I made sure to stay on top of testing and water changes for the guppy and he made it through. I work at a small pet store and am constantly trying to explain this process to customers. It’s kinda scary how many people out there have no idea about any of this, I literally found all this info on the internet (and videos from here) and managed to learn it all pretty easily.

You can always use a water conditioner to bring down the ammonia and nitrite levels.. I would go with neon tetras as a fish to start a tank cause you can easily see when they aren't happy with the water condition by their color.

I use foam out of other tank actually cut into thin strip's and then lie it next to your foam in your new filter and tank and that will maximize the surface area that is in contact with your new foams also I feel like doing it inside the filter allowing it to grow there first and then it will evenly distribute too

How is your aquarium going? I decided to set up one for my son,and the shop assistant in the pet store never mentioned this. I knew there's a period where the aquarium should stay unpopulated to develop bacterial ecosystem,from my friend's experience,but that was ages ago.The clerk gave me a couple of these "bio-boosters" and said I just use these and it'll be all good. I think to myself "ok,so I am aware that bio-technology advanced alot since the last time I had anything to do with aquariums,I should just listen to this clerk,who SHOULD be much more competent then I am" I washed the sand,put in the aquarium,put a few decorations,filled it with water,installed an internal filter and poured the chemicals (bio-boosters) in. I waited 30 mins for everything to settle and just throwed the fishies in. Since then,I've already changed the water once (two days after initial setup) because the water wouldn't stay clear. Already planned to change it for the second time,because the water still isn't clearing,and I washed the filter at least 2 times a day... Luckily,I decided to do some research about these "bio-boosters" and thankfully landed on these super good tutorials. I just hope my kid's fish will survive the process,because I have nowhere else to put them...

Scariest fish turd anywhere. Great vid. I'm working on the same subject for a video on my channel. This confirmed much of my info. Still, it doesn't stop people's eyes from glazing over when the subject is brought up.

Hi, thanks for the great videos! We are prepairing a nano tank for our kids, to eventually keep some dwarf shrimps in it. All is ready, we are buying some plants soon, and then I was thinking to wait for 3 to 4 weeks, before we buy the animals. Will it be enough for the good bacteria to establish themselves? WhereI live, they come rooted in a type of sponges, in tiny pots...

Dude, my niece got a 2.5 gallon tank and two little tiny fish. Her aunt got them for her yesterday at Petco. They were in a bag. We filled the aquarium. Put the appropriate Stress Coat+ in it. We let the filled tank of water get more to our house temperature for about 2-1/2 hours and since the fish were in a bag, placed the bag in the water for twenty minutes and then put them into the tank. Please tell me we're not close to killing them. My niece has been through a lot in the last three months. I really don't want these fish to die from inaccuracy. It would absolutely crush her. I'm always the first to wake up in the house. They've been in the tank for 12 + hours now and look peppy and fine. Thank you for anything you can offer as far as advice. I appreciate it.

Great video. More first time keepers should know about this. I've cycled with ammonia. I like it because you can dose to a very precise ppm of ammonia. This allows you to very accurately cycle to a high enough processing level for what you will be adding first. I like dr.tims for its easy dosing and instructions. Example when I cycle for a betta , i dosed ammonia to 1.50 ppm likely only 1ppm or less is needed but better safe than sorry. When i cycled for my school of 18 tetras i dosed ammonia to 2.75 ppm. So far 0 hiccups when adding fish, even a whole school at a time. I cycled first tank from nothing just time and ammonia. Took forever it seemed. And now i always keep extra pieces of sponges in the filters for seeding new tanks. Brings my cycling time down to a week or less. Cycled media and dirty filter water are the best cycle seeders I've ever used.

Hello John from London UK , I have set up a new 55gl aquarium 2 weeks ago and I am doing ( or literally waiting ) the nitrogen cycling, I haven't been fish keeping for the last 7 years but before that I did it for about 8 , but guess what ?! Only about a month I heard about the cycle thing so now I know why I lost so many fish in the beginning and cleaning filter with tap water :) but then nowadays RU-vid is the best free corse we can find and I found you and Joey . So finally my question : I had a peak of ammonia second day coz I throw in fish food as u said , I asked the fish store for some dirt from sponge but they don't use sponges ... When I add my biological media I had beneficial bacteria in gel balls , 3 day I had ammonia 0 , nitrite going up , so today 16 days since I set up I have a peak of nitrite and 0 nitrate ( this is the same the 7th day ) so... How long should I still wait to have nitrate peak and nitrite 0 ? What else should I do apart from waiting?:) Ty Godblessyou

I’m thinking of going with pure ammonia as it’s quicker and provides better for bigger loads of fish; it’s pure ammonia, so I won’t have to wait for anything to decay speeding up the process even more. Thanks for providing this video. I tried reading about some of this online and boy was that a mistake. It was too much useless info. Especially for someone that didn’t know what the cycling process even was at the beginning.

I've used API Quick start many times, new tank throw a few fish in, keep track of ammonia and three %50 water changes in the first two weeks. Every time two to three weeks later zero ammonia, bit of Nitrite and Nitrates building nicely. Easy. But test water daily is a must, and watch for Ph dives. You should not lose any fish.

I guess that last one is what I ended up doing. When I wanted to get a new tank started, I grabbed a bunch of feeder goldfish to put in there because I had a turtle I was planning on feeding them to anyway, before I found out that was a bad idea. Anyway, those goldfish ended up thriving in there after I had used some of that quick start stuff as well. I didn't lose a single one. Maybe I got lucky?

I plan on setting up a 125 gallon puffer tank soon. Could I use snails to speed up the cycle process? Then when it’s ready the puffer already has food waiting for it🤔

Thank you so much for this video! I just went to the store and bought a tank and they were telling me I needed to have fish for the cycle to work and that I should expect them to die

I did fish-in-cycle with SeaChem Stability bacteria. Never had an ammonia spike. The key is not to overstock.
