This song was all over AM radio in the 70s when I was a kid and it really grew on me. Also I'm noticing a lot of comments here about dads and how this song reminds people of their fathers--very touching.

When I was about 12 years old I started staying up nights and listening to the radio. They had a show call the All Nighters Club on this new format called Classic Rock. One hot night about 2 or 3 AM I heard this for the first time. Blew me away. As a 12 year old I could not imagine 30 years later I would be able to listen to most of the music made in the 20th century for free on a computer. Many changes since then have been bad. The internet has been good.

My favorite version of this song. The most memorable of the lines in this song for me is. "The dog up & died, he up & died...after 20 years he still grieved" ...I can relate..it alway reminds me of my baby....after 25 years I still grieve... I remember when Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded this song..."Goddess" was still living, but I knew that when her time came....I would grieve forever for her....thanks for the video, & the memories of wonderful pet that worth every tear i've shed for her.

Such as Bread, Bad Company, CCR, BTO, ELO, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Kansas, Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd too many to mention!! Bread, who had out some Great Songs/Hits like "Everything i Own, IF, It Don't Matter to Me, Guitar Man, Aubrey, Look What You've Done, Baby I'm A Want You" & Soo many other Great Songs that are still being Played today on Most All Really Good Radio Stations that Play the Classic Hits. These Bands/Songs will still be playing Long After we're Gone. There Will NEVER be Any Music like the Music of the 60-70s Era...Neverr? If, you Didn't grow up in this Era? Then you Really Have Not Lived? Right Stephen!!

On this day in 1971 {May 29th} the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed "Mr. Bojangles" and "House at Pooh Corner" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Six months earlier on November 21st, 1970 "Mr. Bojangles" entered Billboard's Hot top 100; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 19 weeks in the Top 100... And one month earlier on April 24th "House at Pooh Corner" entered the Top 100 and it reached #53 and stayed 13 weeks in the Top 100... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...

So sad to hear about the passing of Jerry Jeff Walker. Mr Bojangles was his finest song. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band rendition was the one I remember in High School. I loved that song then as I do now. They did a great job. It takes me back to a time that was at its essence, pure and innocent. Can't seem to find that today. Regardless, the memories wash out the stink of today's culture.

Heard a version done by someone...sounded like Neil Young's voice & phrasing. Anyway, he told about the real Mr. Bojangles. He lived down in New Orleans and went to bars, put a song on the juke box and danced. Others in the bar bought him a drink or gave him change for the performance. He'd go to other bars and do it over and over till he got good and drunk. Occasionally the police would pick him up and hold him in the parish jail for a while Jerry Jeff Walker, the guy who wrote the song, was a jail mate of his for a while and ended up writing the song about him. The story of the dog and all the traveling he did, you can really hear this guy telling his story in that jail cell. Here's Wikipedia's story. Walker has said he was inspired to write the song after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail. While in jail for public intoxication in 1965, he met a homeless white man who called himself "Mr. Bojangles" (who, in turn, presumably took his pseudonym from performer Bill Robinson, who was likewise nicknamed "Bojangles") to conceal his true identity from the police. He had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance.

Such a beautiful song. There is a homeless man in Savannah Georgia. If you are ever there and you see him playing his guitar in the square in front of city hall. Ask him to play this song. He does a beautiful version that will bring tears to your eyes. His name is Bob. Every time i hear this song i imagine him out in that square picking away singing this song with his raspy voice.

This drummer looks a little bit like the Journey's drummer with their newest singing. The Journey's drummer sings so well its suprising they didn't use him as the new singer. I got the album of the Dirt Band's Uncle Charlie and it was really great. Included an old wire recording from the 1800's of a calypiso or something. Plus getting to hear "Uncle Charlie" play with his guitar and his dog right before Mr. Bojangles was simply suprising and delightful. I suspect I'm not alone in admiring it.
