A review of the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible (ISBN 9780310450504). This Bible features the text of the 2011 revision of the New International Version (NIV) arranged in a single text column, formatted into paragraphs, for the 66 books of the Protestant canon. The font in the text is 9.1 points. It includes 20,000 study notes printed in ~7.5 point font. The paper is reasonably opaque and show-through (ghosting) is a minor issue.
The volume is bound in tan and caramel imitation leather. The binding is sewn and the Bible lies open in both Genesis and Exodus. The wide inner margin generally keeps the text out of the gutter and on the flat portion of the page. The words of Christ are in black ink.

The NIV is something I read along with a word-for-word style version. It's useful for many people, and I find it helps me understand some passages better. My favorite is the NKJV, and I'm also studying out of my new NET Bible. A person should use whichever version speaks to them, the one likely they will pick up and read more. I find the leather flex, leather-like, vinyl versions use paper lining on the inside, which ends up tearing quite rapidly. You said you didn't like the feel of this one, but they do vary sometimes. The leathers are becoming so expensive these days, even so I do prefer the real leather covers. I have the burgundy cover which I love and the hardback Bible (Orthodox Study Bible) fits nicely in it.
@RGrantJones

Thanks for commenting, Charlene F.! I agree that the NIV works well as a second, more interpretive translation. I've been reading this NIV alongside a KJV. Regarding imitation leather, I have an ESV Creeds and Confessions Bible -- which I'll review in a month or so -- with an imitation leather cover that's a pleasure to touch. So, yes, they do vary.

Once again, a very thorough review. A bit pf an unrelated topic--what do you think of the Lamsa bible? Have you done a review on this bible? If not, will you?

Yes, I intend to review his translation at some point. I haven't studied it in detail, but putting together a review will give me the opportunity to take a closer look. I did score his New Testament against four Greek New Testaments, and the agreement with Robinson-Pierpont is relatively high (about 69%). Thank you for the kind comment!

Wow, I never thought that youʼd actually review this particular Study Bible. I am a big fan of this Study Bible with the way it is voluminous in its resource and also that it was spearheaded by one of my most favorite New Testament scholars, Dr. D. A. Carson. And if Iʼm not mistaken, this Caramel-colored cover is also their most expensive cover offering for this particular Study Bible version. I have no qualms about it, though. The style itself gave it a bit of a modern character. Thank you for doing this review of the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible, Mr. Jones. Keep on doing these reviews. Another great review thank you. After accidentally ordering a bible not knowing it had red lettering, I agree with you, I find it distracting. Also I think it gradually leads people to having the impression that only when Jesus is quoted is it the word of God, I.e. God speaking to us through scripture. When in reality everything written is God's word, written by God who did his work through humans. If you can't trust the black letters, what makes the red letters anymore trustworthy? 2000 years of black ink and suddenly we struggle to understand the word of God? Lol
@RGrantJones

Thanks for the encouraging comment! Unless they're very dark, red letters cause me eye strain. They're actually painful to read. And, of course, you're right -- all the letters are from God.

I lean toward premillennialism mainly because I find it hard to believe that several of the earliest Christian writers could have been mistaken on that point. But I acknowledge that the other views comport better with some passages of Scripture. Thanks for the view and encouraging comment, Zach!

I have recently got rid of most of the niv bibles because they have diluted and removed a lot of words that we're in the KJV and Geneva Bible. As usual, a very nice review. Your Bible reviews are very academic yet accessible. :) It seems that Protestants have more options when it comes to translations of Bible, even here in Germany. Maybe because Catholics does not allow a lot of theirs's to be published without permission of Church? There is not much option for Eastern/Slavic Orthodox Bibles in English, only the Orthodox Study Bible. Another question in my mind is: How much % of Bible (Catholic & Protestant) is Old Testament, and how much % is New Testament? I have read that Approx. 76% is old OT and 24% is NT.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 года назад
Thanks for the kind comment, Hassan! Regarding Catholic translations, I don't know why there are fewer of them. Your guess may be correct: Since Catholics generally want to use translations that carry an imprimatur and nihil obstat, Catholic translators aren't motivated to undertake a translation unless they can get the hierarchy on their side. The NT percentage will be lower for Catholic Bibles than for Protestant ones. The ESV-CE, which doesn't include notes and references, has a total page count of 1198 pages, and its Old Testament (including the Deuterocanonicals) is 962 pages long. So that gives us 80% OT and 20% NT. I have an Oxford Brevier Clarendon KJV (without Apocrypha) with an Old Testament 1154 pages long and a New Testament spanning 346 pages. That works out to 77/23.
@hassanmirza2392
@hassanmirza2392 3 года назад
@@RGrantJones Thanks for replying. And who manages the Orthodox and Protestant Bible translation quality control? I think Catholic translation hierarchy makes sense. Also, these Bibles with too many colors and pictures look fake and less serious, and it also removes the sense that one is reading a Holy Book. I think RNJB has a graceful look, also this NRSV Catholic Bible which I have bought. www.amazon.de/-/en/Catholic-Bible-Press/dp/0785230416/ref=pd_sbs_14_2/257-4617430-1968850?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0785230416&pd_rd_r=adf4a846-e2d7-451f-b5e8-3327fb7321e5&pd_rd_w=NfAze&pd_rd_wg=K9nGG&pf_rd_p=a03ac387-6e4d-4f6b-96b6-1853da0bb37b&pf_rd_r=8DGPDWT7W41QW0N8B22C&psc=1&refRID=8DGPDWT7W41QW0N8B22C It has 1034 OT pages (76%) and 270 NT (24%) pages.

@@hassanmirza2392 - regarding the Orthodox, that's a good question. I'm not sure the Eastern Orthodox Bible New Testament has any ecclesiastical approval. The Orthodox Study Bible does not appear to have had any official ecclesiastical endorsement. Protestant Bibles are managed by market forces, I think. In outline, quality translations are respected by scholars. That respect becomes known to the public, and it results in sales.
@hassanmirza2392
@hassanmirza2392 3 года назад
@@RGrantJones I was reading that the orthodox Study Bible has lots of Trinity and Jesus in footnotes of Old Testament, which is not honest even according to Christian theology. It was a customer review at Amazon. This looks like a good study Bible if they improve the quality of commentary, it also has more books.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 года назад
@@hassanmirza2392 - to read the Old Testament in light of the New is the the method the early Christians followed. It's one of the things I like about the Orthodox Study Bible. I just wish they'd consistently translated the Septuagint rather than the Masoretic Text.

I know from other videos that you do not seem to care for the NIV translation because of the inclusive language issue and the grammatical ramifications, and there may be other things. But aside from inclusive language what do you think about the quality of its translation of the NT? Why is the JB and NEB better or worse? Many thanks!
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 года назад
Thanks for the question, Fernando! What follows is unsupported by careful analysis and subjective in nature. That said, note that all three are interpretive translations: When the original is ambiguous, the translators make a choice and present it in English -- which means that you have no opportunity to analyze the ambiguity yourself because you aren't aware it exists. For that reason, I don't recommend any of them as primary translations. The JB and the NEB are quite a bit more interpretive than the NIV, but my impression is that both the JB and the NEB present rich vocabulary, varied syntax, and pithy forms of expression more often than the NIV does. My impression is that the NIV is relatively dull and bland. It reminds me of my junior high school textbooks. I suspect the EHV editors had the NIV in mind when they wrote that they didn't want their translation to drain “the color and liveliness from passages by removing the imagery.” On the gender issue, I've been working off and on for several months on a video comparing the gender inclusive approaches of the NIV and the NRSV. My overall sense is that the NIV is less rigorous and comprehensive in its implementation, but it often employs the singular 'they' -- something I haven't found in the NRSV. The singular 'they' definitely annoys me, but it's not as obfuscatory as the NRSV's use of 'mortal' for 'son of man'.

I just bought a 2011 NIV not long ago. I like some of the changes to it, and use it for casual reading, just getting the idea of the stories, especially. I do not like the gender inclusiveness as I'm "old school" and taught "he" or "his" can mean both genders. Basically those specific changes only confuse me, too. Great evaluation, as usual. I will always rely on the NKJV and KJV for exact wording, but sometimes it helps my fragile (or exhausted) mind to read from a more dynamic equivalent version. I figure if it is successful in keeping me in the Word longer, it's worth it.

Edward - I too would prefer this study Bible in a more literal translation. But since I often use two translations -- one at the literal end and one more interpretive -- I find I can gainfully use both the translation and the notes in this volume alongside an RV, ASV, NKJV, or KJV. Yours is the second comment I've seen recommending the notes in this study Bible be combined with the NASB (though the other person suggested they use the 2020 NASB). If Zondervan reads comments on RU-vid reviews, perhaps they'll take those recommendations to heart. Hope you are well!

@@RGrantJones I'm well. The infection rate here is increasing daily, but I'm good. The scholarship in this study bible seems to be well put together, but I just can't get over the translation. I exclusively use literal translations, if I were to diverge, I'd go for the CSB translation, which I believe to be superior to the NIV. With there being so many transactions to choose from, we are spoiled for choices, yet beyond the NKJV, I think the NASB is the only other transaction that I'd buy. The ESV isn't bad, but it leans too much towards Calvinism and I am not fond of their translation of Genesis 3:16 and 4:7 either, other than that its okay. Perhaps I even prefer it over the NRSV Comfort Print which I think has a tendency to look too bold, too dark, especially in large print though I think Zondervan hit the sweet spot with the NRSV Cultural Background Study Bible. In other NRSV bibles the boldness of the font combined with the rather close, to my eyes, line spacing makes the text look crowded. A RU-vid comment is not the place to engage in detailed or extended argument but I will go against the grain and say that I think the NIV gets a lot of very unfair, undeserved criticism. To my mind, especially compared with some other more revered translations, the English of the NIV is of a very high quality, even elegant. I don't find myself "stubbing my toe", so to speak, on the tortured syntax I find elsewhere. Certainly it has its infelicities, as all translations do, but I seldom find them egregious. I will, however, mention the issue of "inclusive" language. There's nothing intuitive or natural about the inclusive "he"; it's simply a convention that took hold in an earlier era and is now fading away. (The use of the singular "they" is known from the 1300s.) If we look at the pronouns in other languages that do double duty (German and Italian, for example, and certainly others), there's nothing odd or wrong with "they" taking on a singular meaning; it's merely a convention whose time, for most people, has come. There are many developments in language use that many of us -- myself included! -- find regrettable but no amount of prescriptivism will stop them. And truth be told, I suspect that many people who decry "inclusive" language use the singular "they" all the time in speech.

Thanks for commenting, Seaclock35. I notice the singular "they" often these days. This last Saturday, I heard a sports announcer refer to a male football player as a "they". Even so, I know of only one person who, when they employs the singular "they," makes their verb match their pronoun. Perhaps I'll eventually get used to it. But since, as you point out, the language is fluid, why not introduce a new set of gender indefinite singular pronouns? I wouldn't object to zhe, zhis, zher, and zherself, though I'd prefer a set that flows across the tongue with less effort.

As I am sure you are aware of, it seems as if most of the updated older translations and the newer ones that have followed have gone in the direction of "gender inclusiveness." It disappoints me that the N.A.S.B. has as well followed suit with their new legacy standard translation. It seems as if they can't leave well enough alone.

2 pages to explain what sin is when 1 John 3:4 clearly defines what it is. "Everyone who sins breaks the law (Torah); in fact, sin is lawlessness" the guys that makes the NIV commentaries has torah phobia.
