If you like it it’s all that matters. I have done a room with off white and used a rag with white shiny paint and turned the rag often. It looked great and is great for a display wall. I also did three colors of paint for rolling clouds in the boys room on main wall as you enter room and used dark on low part of the rest of the walls with the light blue the rest of the way up. I stuck stick on stars on the clouds with sticky putty they glow in the dark. The room is beautiful!

I’m interested in trying this technique. Thanks for sharing it! I think I would be interested in trying it with gray paper. Maybe it would kinda have a stone look to it. 🤔

I think if you had primed the drywall white before you did the paper effect, it would look a lot different. As it is now, you could also use a white glaze to tone down the visible tape joints, etc., and make the overall look of the wall a little more subtle.

🌸When doing the brown paper bag flooring, I ripped pieces and crumbled them first before placing on my floor. It gives the illusion-of suede/faux leather. However, I used all purpose Elmer’s Glue with 6 coats of polyurethane. (Love it) Say.....if you decide to go over your walls.............think about crumbling them first, it adds a textured look.🌸

I just want to say how much I enjoy your videos. I love that you do your own thing and you don't follow what everyone else is doing on the net. You both are such a wealth of information, and I always stayed glued to whatever video you put out. As far as the walls are concerned, in the future for your other rooms, how about painting the walls before doing the paper treatment, that way the drywall seams won't show, but you would still have the visual texture of the pattern you are looking for. I personally like it the way it is, but as I said, it would paint the drywall first. Just a thought! Kudos to you both! :-)

Not sure you want any advice after working so hard and thinking the process through on the your white paper technique OR if this suggestion goes against your belief system of not painting the walls, BUT a light, undercoat of white interior paint before applying the sealer could have eliminated the 'see-through' effect. You still would have the texture and interest you wanted while eliminating the 'see-through' problem. You work so hard and pay attention to detail. Lots of admiration out here for you!

I've only seen this done with wrinkled brown paper, on floors. Your choice of white is amazing. I'd have never thought of this. I really like it. The contrast with the brown is really chic. I'd like to see some 'art' on the wall, and eventually, as Ashley said, some trim, and a quilt on the bed... plants in the room. Maybe some architectural finds here and there to break up the look, but I hope you don't change it. Having it different on the ceiling just shows artistic balance. You guys are awesome. Look in any high end decoration magazine and you'll see these subtle textures. Sameness is not pleasant. Please don't try to get it to match. It's perfect. I'm so impressed.

I don't like it because you can see the panels of drywall. If you would have first put a white prier on the walls and then did your paper bag it would have looed much better . I did my sisters huge living room with a very tedious method of layers of paint and tissue paper. It took days to do it but really came out so cool and textured. Maybe you can save the whole thing by a layer of white paint and then repaper again. It would give it more texture. You could even highlight it with an off white sponge job over it and really give it some dimension. Good luck!

I think it's great! Since you already ordered the new paper to finish the ceiling, I would suggest that you go over the walls again with pieces, but center each piece on the converging seams to double up the design. (I hope that made sense) Even if you don't do it, I still love the design. When you have the room furnished with your art on the walls, you can always change it if you don't like it. I love you guys. You are such a loving family and a great inspiration to us all.

I used a very similar technique several years ago. I used the brown wrapping paper you can get on rolls, and I tore fist size pieces out and crumpled them up. Then I dipped them in the wallpaper paste and put them on the wall. I did an accent wall (a small area around a large window but I only did the bottom half, then I put on a nice wood trim piece and painted the top half the same sage greenish color that I used for the entire rest of the room. It looked magnificent!!! It actually looked kinda like leather and several people who saw it commented on how cool it was. And hey, I wanted to make you think about something else...I noticed you mentioned several times that you were afraid that you'd 'messed up the wall' . NEVER worry about messing up a wall with just paint or covering. Look at it this way, the more layers it has the more protection and the most sturdy it is. So if you do a wall and decide it wasn't want you wanted, cover it with something else, and so on....the wall is a blank canvas. You are the artist, so you create what it will look like at that given moment. And you guys are doing wonderfully!

I did the brown paper years ago and loved it. I didn't do a whole room, I did the bottom half of my hall way. But if I remember right after tearing the paper I waded it up then flattened it out again and it gave it little crinkles and lines in it that made it very interesting and of course where the crinkles were they were different colored because the paper had been "worked" they absorbed more walpaper paste than the other areas if I am expalning it where it is understandable. Great job guys. Love the walls. I may try that with the white paper like you did in one of my rooms. Love watching your remodel.

I like the effect, and you could always put another layer on later or paint a light color over top of it. I have always like brown paper floors, and I like texture on a wall too. I do like it better when you put a little bit of stain on the brown paper, it gives it a little more dimension.

I really, really like the white. I really like the brown paper, also. Years ago, for an art project in college. I used the technique on a table top. Just used white glue base, smaller torn brown pieces and several coats of thinned white glue to seal. I got an "A" on the project. LEAVE it as is. If you find later that you want a change, just paint. Take care. You both work so hard. My congratulations.

❤❤❤ I done this paper technique years ago, (white) A few years later when I started taking it off for Something different, oh my gosh!!!! What a booger to scrap off grrrr,,,nightmare! Lol I promised myself from that day forth, wallpaper of any kind wasn’t ever going on my walls again. Not even a border. Now I stick with (boring as y’all call it lol) painted walls. Doug and Ashley, When people dare to use their imagination it always delights me. Your sleeping enclosure has a sense of comfort, on the edge of minimalism and soaring imaginations. Belle imagined Dragon scales from a Beautiful White Dragon., obviously the outcome stirs the imagination, however subtle it may seem. I'm a descendant of a line of inventors that changed things for the better in industry and the home and have that mindset myself. I have a practically applied imagination, I suppose you'd say, so I get it. : ) The restraint on your part was a good thing, as you can alter the look of your nest whenever you get a whim to. I would most likely take it a step farther, by painting the same nearly clear, see through scales on the window glass itself, extending the protective dragon scales throughout your boudoir', but that's me. I know, I know, (Restraint). I Love your nest. Side note .... A good many years ago I applied the same technique with the thick brown paper bags, on my floor, finishing it with a bit of Old English polish, then gently wiping some of the polish off, leaving a bit of a dark edge to give it more of a leather look, then finished it with some sort of protective coating. I loved the worn, weathered, leather look and the look can be used on many other things as well, like book covers, cupboards, etc. : )

Doug! If you would have primed the drywall with white primer, which I was quite surprised you did not, then the thin paper technique would have worked. I really do not like what you have now because even from my tiny phone, from afar you can see the taping of the drywall still. I think you should put another layer of paper on it. I actually liked the look of the brown paper before you put the finish on it, looked like a nicer taupe. I actually do look at walls. Walls make the room as do the floors. If you have an ugly paint color on the walls you will not feel good in the room, in my opinion and would want to change the colorto please the eye and senses. Rooms also give you a feeling as well. Colors give you a feeling in a room. Museums use a white background to show off works of art. Since you guys say you do not put much art on the walls, I do not know why, you can find tons of beautiful works of art at garage sales, thrift stores, estate sales, ect. Anyhow just giving you my opinion it looks unfinished with the walks like that. Hope you continue to put extra paper, looking forward to the finished look! Take care.

To get a more uniform look, try a white tinted sealer instead of the clear one on the drywall before applying the paper on the next room to hide the joint compound I've seen a similar method using drywall mud instead of paper. The drywall is finished as usual then the flat wall is painted off-white. After it dries, knock-down texture is applied over the white paint. The mud dries to a putty color on the off-white wall to give a similar effect. Clear sealer over the top is optional but would help keep the walls easier to clean.

I have been bingeing this past week to catch up and have thoroughly enjoyed watching how you have progressed through time, such a journey! I feel very comfortable with your channel, your philosophy of life is inspiring... it just feels plain old good to witness your outlook. Your bedroom walls reminds of sunlight reflecting through water (very peaceful) but I also can see the dragon scale aspect Belle related to. Big thumbs up to how you take on responsibilities that too often others turn a blind eye to : stopping in traffic to help the person who ran out of gas, providing shelter, food and medical care to feral cats, making sure the lone chick had others to keep it company, completing projects with the next owner in mind, teaching your children to be cautious and curious in how they handle nature. Belle and Maverick are so gentle! Helping Jeff (yes I did follow and will watch all of his videos) was GREAT! You guys are a fine example of what the human race can and should be. Ashley ..when you pulled the bitless bridle out of the box I was like "YES!" I could go on and on ..just know you definitely make a difference.

Just my guess. It doesn't matter whether I like it or if I'd be satisfied with it eventually, what matters is whether every time you walk in you look at it as a second rate project. I love the paper effect! Both the brown and the lighter white paper!

When I heard what you were doing, I was worried, because a friend of mine did this and the paper peeled off something terrible. But I forgot for a minute that you guys are super smart and always make sure and do things the best way possible. ;) I think it looks really awesome. I think if you do a second layer on the walls, it'll lose its uniqueness. But that's just my opinion. :)

I am a fan of painting walls due to time constrants, I have to admit the walls look really good, I actually like the white walls that you see thru and not so much the brown wall or ceiling, you should have just painted the ceiling and saved yourself hours of time. Great job nothing wrong with being creative.

Just paint it white that will seal it as well. I did white crumpled tissue paper in my bathroom and painted it white. I think it looks great. Having the drywall show through would definitely be a no go for me.

Also, if you crumple even the brown paper first you get a lot more interest it can then be glazed with a tiny which really soaks in on the crumpled bits and gives very interesting effects.

Keep going if you don’t like it after it’s done paint it. I’ve seen people do this with tissue paper kinda wadded up and pasted. Love your finished product! It is amazing! 💕🙏

I love this!!! I hope you won't go over the walls again, because it's neat the way it looks already. And I love that brown paper technique, too! Really looks quite beautiful. :) I would have never thought to paste paper on my walls, but we painted with plastic one time at the church we used to attend,, and it really turned out quite beautiful as well. But these look like large leopard spots, or maybe even giraffe spots. Good job you too!!

Interesting ... I really, really like it. It is unique just as you are unique ... I wonder if you do Bell's(?) room paint one wall just a light cote of a colour that she like and the rest white, then you can see that colour where you now can see the drywall. Enjoy decorating your house, thanks for sharing ...:)

I love the brown paper wall! It looks like a rock wall. Beautiful!

You should always prime paint the raw Sheetrock first. That would have prevented seams from showing through and will also allow you to remove pasted paper down the road. Otherwise you will tear up the Sheetrock when trying to remove later. Which you or someone will probably do in the future!
