Agreed 100%. My favorite translation for devotional reading is the ESV, but Christians need to understand that the truth of Scripture in English interpretation does not need Evangelical concessions. Unbiased, ecumenical translation is imperative for serious, meaningful Bible study so that people can truly understand and adequately defend the faith.

I deal with this all of the time in the Bible groups I admin on Facebook, including the Fans of the NRSV Bible group. Many people do not have a realistic understanding of Bible translation.

Glad I found your channel a few days ago, friend. How long have you been doing this? I hope you will soon have many more subscribers. My favorite translation is the RSV. I was introduced to it in seminary and still have my old red (uh oh!) hardback. All the kerfluffle over young woman/virgin is ridiculous. The word in Hebrew typically means "young woman," and we have to deal with it. Of course, most unmarried young women would have been virgins. A theory in search of a conspiracy. 😅 I appreciate your work!

Im personally excited to get a copy of the SBL. I think a lot of the criticism is a misunderstanding of what their goals even were at the SBL for this study Bible. It was never meant to be what evangelicals seem to expect from it. There are also a few evangelicals on the team, so they must not have felt too bothered by it. Ha.

Evangelicalism tends to gravitate toward sensationalism. A lot of evangelical's would be surprised to see how the RSV translates 1cor. 6:9. :)

Regarding Isaiah 7:14, it seems to me (from the little I know) that almah just doesn't have a great translation into contemporary English. Even if it did, it's still highly disputed and of course there is the LXX translation to consider as well. I think "maiden" would be a good choice but it's archaic. Whether a translation goes with "virgin" or "young woman", I'm not too bothered as long as the alternate is included as a footnote. That's one thing I take issue with on the CSB - it does not give a footnote there. No worries, I added it myself!

I guess people don't know that maiden or young woman, and that day and age, would be a virgin. So I really don't have an issue with the virgin at all. I just don't like when people downplay the translation if it's not "virgin" specifically. I think it gives too much weight to the English language over God's word.

I'm strongly pro-"maiden," archaic or not. It's accurate to the broader meaning of the Hebrew word while still allowing for the connotation that the LXX translators picked up on when they brought it into Greek. Plus, it allows the prophecy to have both an immediate application in Ahaz's day (where the birth itself doesn't appear to be miraculous) and a secondary application to (or ultimate "fulfillment" in) the miracle of Christ's conception and birth. And finally, I think that a translation using "maiden" can actually get away without needing a marginal note to point the reader in either direction, whereas "young woman" and "virgin" both need such a note to offer balance.

@@MAMoreno I fully agree, it's the perfect word here and I think that even beyond the usefulness of its meaning that "Maiden" just sounds nice. But I know no modern translation will use it because it's archaic and sounds too "KJV-ish". It's interesting that we have this word with the proper subtle meaning here, but it's fallen out of usage so we don't use it. I'm sure it's one of many that we've discarded over time but shouldn't have.
