I live in NYC and a knife nut. Locking knives are legal carry in NYC as long as the blade is under 4” and completely concealed. Also recently, a new law was passed allowing gravity knives to be legal as well. Weirdly enough, it was brought on by a threat of a lawsuit because cops were targeting minorities in a predatory fashion. They would confiscate a knife and try to force it open with a wrist flick. Even if they they can flick it open once out of ten tries they would call it a gravity knife which is a felony weapons charge. As we all know, knives with weak detentes or loosened pivots will wrist flick open. Daggers (double edge knives) and spring assisted knives are still illegal though.
This is true about gravity knives legal now. BUT, cops will still arrest you if you have one in the subways. No matter what you carry, make sure NONE of it is visible, not a clip and not even the form of it through your jeans, etc. Ny sucks.
@@blazel462 I did hear this somewhere in the news that de Blasio still wanted to enforce the "gravity knife" test in public transit. I didn't really pay attention to that because I rarely use the subway or buses. But, according to knife rights, NYPD will no longer use the wrist flick test across the board including subways and buses. Carrying a legal knife is still allowed as long it is completely hidden.
@@CytoplasmicGoo thanks for the reply. I live outside of the city and been trying to figure out what I can get for hiking and general use. Ny laws about this can be confusing. For in the city, i think under 4 inch slip joint would be safest to avoid problems with cops. In my opinion they can still arrest you if they want and leave it to you to deal with a judge. Aw come on, I live in NYC and its actually pretty nice here. It’s become way too expensive for low lives to live here so its pretty safe... safer than Baghdad at least.
@@CytoplasmicGoo I don't live there but I grew up nearby, I have never, ever had any trouble in NYC, unlike some other cities I could mention. I have met a lot of great, friendly people there, not sure where the bad rep. comes from.

that blade is too long to carry in NYC. it has to be shorter than the palm of the cops hand buddy. and they will call a woman cop over who wears a size small glove. truth is, your better off carrying a zebra pen. and a bright ass tactical flashlight. yes, cops will stand and try to flick it for 25 to 30 minuets and call a few of their guys over to also try to do it. it has been done before where one cop was able to open a freaking swiss army knife by flicking it. I hate NYC knife laws. they make no damn sense. I live in AZ now. i carry a gun, a flashlight a few knives of various lengths, some assisted and some standard folders. nearly everyone here carries a knife everyday. most people own and carry a gun as well. its interesting that we are in the same country but worlds apart when it comes to what you are trusted with.
Sighhh. Raised in Queens, living in the great state of Georgia (thank god), and have to go back for a buddies wedding in July. I was thinking of taking my Kabar TDI 1480 and Gerder EAB utility pocket knife. So much for that.
Carrying a knife is legal in NYC, however when it comes to you using the knife on a attacker, you will have to face a court to justify your actions (even if it was self defense) and if you don't provide good enough evidence, you can face prison time.
Only way you can use that for self-defense in nyc is if the assailant is using deadly force on you. Use that on a perp attacking you with his hands or small blunt object and you're going to jail.
Well that's only if you get caught. You need to motivate and flee after you're forced into protecting yourself. You're right though the cops won't "understand" Bottom line: you're wrong if you defend yourself in NYC
Empty hands is considered non deadly as long the attacker is one person and you are not a child, small or frail, infirm or elderly. I think that rule is strange because someone with empty hands can push you into the subway tracks, into the path of a moving vehicle, or in some cases seriously injure or kill you if struck.
Yeah, for a while I would only carry lockbacks because those you can’t wrist flick. But, knives still need to be under 4”, single edge, not automatic or assisted, no balisongs, and “completely” concealed. So you can’t have a pocket clip showing or must not imprint on your clothes. Weird rule, it comes from the city menacing law.
I just read the article! I’m not a nun chucks guy myself but finally judges are starting to see the ridiculousness of some of these rules. We need more guys like this Maloney character.
@@CytoplasmicGoo NYC really needs to move towards a leadership that believes in the constitution. they need to believe that peoples lives are actually worth something and that everyone deserves the right to self preservation and a chance to defend themselves. knives are tools and we are in a free country. we should not have to explain why we are carrying a knife if the only crime we have committed is carrying a knife with a pocket clip. New yorkers are too use to being told how to live. they don't like freedom as much as the rest of country. its true by how they vote. they vote for the most regulation, they vote for the most controlling, power hungry politicians. for such a book smart city, its hard to understand the mass idiocy when it comes to voting people into office. Incorrect, folding knives can be locking but the blade must be under 4", single edged, non assisted or automatic. They also must be completely concealed.

I would be careful with that one. It looks like they can get enough purchase on the blade to slightly push it out the detent where they could flick it open.
Wrist flick test is now considered illegal for cops to use as a means to test for gravity knives as they were being used to criminalize non criminal activities such as carrying a knife. It is perfectly legal to carry a locking folding knife but the blade has to be under 4", single edged, non assisted or automatic. They also must be completely concealed.
