The Oak Ridge Boys sing the classic "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and after that, they begin to sing "Sixteen Tons", the signature song of Tennessee Ernie Ford, who was watching the show. A wonderful surprise was coming up.
Ernest Jennings Ford (February 13, 1919 - October 17, 1991), known professionally as Tennessee Ernie Ford, was an American singer and television host who enjoyed success in the country and Western, pop, and gospel musical genres. Noted for his rich bass-baritone voice and down-home humor, he is remembered for his hit recordings of "The Shotgun Boogie" and "Sixteen Tons". He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990.
Ford scored an unexpected hit on the pop charts in 1955 with his rendering of "Sixteen Tons", a sparsely arranged coal-miner's lament. Merle Travis had first recorded it in 1946. It reflected experiences of the Travis family in the mines at Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The song's fatalistic tone and bleak imagery were in stark contrast to some sugary pop ballads and rock & roll also on the charts in 1955:
You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...
With Ford's snapping fingers and a unique clarinet-driven pop arrangement by Ford's music director, Jack Fascinato, "Sixteen Tons" spent ten weeks at number one on the country charts and seven weeks at number one on the pop charts. The record sold over twenty million copies and was awarded a gold disc. The song made Ford a crossover star and became his signature song.

Don't you start about our children. They are fighters, just like us. They will work for a fair wage, just like us. That's the spirit of this song and you have picked the WRONG PLACE to insult the generations of the future. 16 tons - spare us the one pound of tongue in your mouth. Dignity has fled from the owners of businesses in too many places - you know it and they know it. This is a reckoning. Or did you forget the years of crap and the retirement-deprived fathers before you? Have you ever heard this song before? And how is it already decades in the making and you didn't pick up the message? The communists weren't the ones making your dad work 16 hours a day - that was your rich neighbor who pocketed the wages. Get a clue man!

I remember watching this live on TV, and when they went into 16 tons and were all snapping their fingers with the exception of Steve, I remember seeing the other microphone in his hand and thinking to myself “what are they up to?” I quickly realized that Tennessee Ernie Ford was probably wondering the same thing. When he, and millions of others realized just what was happening, it was both magical and emotional. This was a historic night, and the roaring applause from the crowd of peers helped prove why Tennessee Ernie Ford deserved to be a member of such a great honor like this induction.

This was his second award show surprise that year. In June of that year at the TNN Music City News Awards he was given the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award. He wasn't planning on attending that show until he was told that Martha White Flour Company asked him to accept a honor on there behalf. Then this night as he sat there, he didn't think he was going to win this honor and whispered to Minnie Pearl sitting with him and his wife, that "I didn't get it". She already knew and said back to him, "Ernie they are singing your songs." At that moment he knew he was the honoree. Loved how they would keep things a secret until the moment it was revealed, they would release a list of names who were nominated for the Hall of Fame, but they kept the winner under wraps until the moment of presentation.

I remember watching the Ford Show Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford from 1958 to 1961, and some of his ABC-TV daytime show from 1962 to early 1965. He was the first celebrity I ever had a crush on, and I loved hearing him sing, and I even sang along with him at times. He had a wonderful singing voice and a wonderful sense of humor, occasionally when his eyes opened wide and made me laugh. He will surely be missed by all who loved him.
