Well, after a few cold and dark nights in the off grid camper I am making it a bit like home now. Read the full article: www.thediyworld...
I am still low on power but am working on fixing the problem soon. With a few good sunny days things should be looking better.
I am finished with the wood stove for now. I will no longer mess with it until either I get the water boiler system properly fixed - reliably and sustainably, or replaced with a small wood stove that can safely be used in the camper.
I will be using LED lights in the camper tonight for light in order to save the battery power until we get a sunny day again. It rained all day today, so no charging from the solar panels.
I also made a nice work bench today out of the old twin bed I was not using. This frees up space and leaves my desk clear.

Thanks, I thought long and hard about it and decided the work bench was more important than a useless bed. The desk was one of the first mods I made to this camper. That was a bed as well before. I love my desk.

Yes, those are the skills I am trying to learn and bring back. It is a good feeling too when you can live clean and inexpensively.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
I saw it. Looks like a good start to a project. I often wonder if I should just get a motorhome instead of a camper because I move so much. Cant wait to see it inside when you get it cleaned up.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yeah, I will do a video on that one day. Those solar cells can charge up larger batteries than they give you in the lamps. What they do to save a penny. Happy you made it through alright. It was a big storm. Last year I lost my antique shop and all my personal antiques in the flooding. Was not expecting Irene to destroy upstate NY.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
I never heard of them, but I will be using something like that in summer to cool the place. Using PVC tubes stuck in the ground to pull cold air up into the camper.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Hey, they say "what doesnt kill you only makes you tougher". Sort of true. I am getting tougher. And used to the cold. Lets see what the next few days bring. Spring is on the way, so it can only get better (I hope)
@TheDoItYourselfWorld

Thank you. I cannot do too much because I rent, so no dome. But I plan to have a compost pile and get the most out of the greenhouse I have anyway. I was told a tea light would help keep it warm at night. I am thinking maybe a tiny little alcohol burner to regulate the temps in the cold night.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yes, the compost is a good idea. In summer I will be composting a lot of stuff, including toilet waste.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Thank you. I am using a black and decker hand saw and sometime a black and decker firestorm battery powered saw.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Ok, I have seen that one before. I am thinking about designing a stove and getting the metal cut at a local shop. A simple design with 6 plates of thick steel, some hardware and you have a stove.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yes, I agree. I need all three. An expansion tank, larger radiator and fans. I have a car radiator and its fan I am going to use, but I will need a pulse width modulator to control the fan speed and limit its current or it will drain my batteries fast. Especially in the winter months when I need it.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Wish I knew about those batteries and how to maintain them. Would be good to know.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Sounds good. I plan to do a no till garden this year using only compost and see how it goes.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yup, I am going to do just that. I have the wood for framing, just need to find some boards for the sides, top and bottom and find something to weatherproof it with. Looking for some unwanted shingles or something.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Thanks for the compliment. I heard those propane heaters are not all that efficient. And they use a LOT of electricity to run the blower fan. I am looking for a more sustainable solution that will have zero follow up costs or expenses.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld

Thank you, yes things will get better and better. Then I will be moving on to some off grid living projects and experiments.

Cool, I will check out your channel when I get better internet. Now to answer your question you will have to wait a bit. I am planning a video for every single part of life in this camper. I learn something new every day. But for now, look up the book humanure, it is very eye opening.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld

The stove is a perfect water boiler tho and helps heat the back side of the camper with this setup.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
I was thinking about lubrication for the old stove and the pipes plus times when I do not have fire going, so it would not freeze. I will rework the system somehow to make it better.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
yeah, its getting there. Just wait till I get my new golf cart batteries. I think probably one of them failed. It can happen that one got a dead cell. That would cause the problems I was seeing, I think. Advance Auto should replace them straight up. I just need to find that receipt.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Ok, thanks, I will look at it later. I found my receipt. Maybe online was a good thing. Did some searching through emails and printed it out. If I had paper and lost it, that would be the end.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
You mean expansion tank? I am thinking about a car radiator type because it has to take the heat. Probably, what, a gallon.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Sounds good. Variety and alternate systems are good to have.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yeah, I am working on a plan for something like that. I have to do away with the pump, antifreeze and pressure.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
I am trying to figure a way to rework the system. In a camper there is not so much space for all that. But I am planning to change it before i use it again.

The truck camper is ready to slide into a truck and go. It has everything I need to survive long term, fishing, hunting, medical, clothing, food, tools, and much more. If I go fishing, I pull a pole out of the truck camper and put it back when I am done. It stays there. Nope, not selling. Anyway a few friends of mine with no preps are hoping to hitch a ride if I go. Its their only hope.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Yes, they are sealed batteries. But I will vent the area anyway for when I get my golf cart batteries replaced.

I am using two computer server fans to move my heat around. They only dray 250mA each.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Not a mr heater tho right? I think he meant the ones that come with an RV. Those have powerful blowers. What do you have?
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 11 лет назад
Thank you. I am going to replace or repair the stove. Not sure yet. For a nice starter kit with everything you need, a harbor freight 45 watt kit is good. Not too cheap, but with a coupon its ok. For a larger setup later, look up "cheap solar panels". There are a lot of good companies that come up. PM me later and I can give you some specifics. Problem is the shipping is insane on most of them.

glad to see your battery problem is sorted,the simple cheap answer to your stove problem is, install a small water tank (open topped) to act as a header tank, high up in your cupboard, then have the water outlet from your stove go through your radiator then feed into the top of the tank, then plumb a pipe from the bottom of the tank into the inlet of the stove, do away with the pump, now this will work through thermo syphon,the tank will act as an expansion chamber, small cost tank and fittings

If you're ever worried about hot air being up towards the top of your trailer you can make fabric tubes with those small computer fans at the top. It easily sucks the hot air from the ceiling and deposits it near the floor.

We started out with a wood stove in our basement, heated our entire house with it. Later, we had "water jackets" welded to the outside of the stove, installed firebrick, and used coal in the stove while tying the water lines into our baseboard heaters. The house also has a gas furnace with an expansion tank. We use the gas now because of the coal mess, and coal is just as expensive now. We can easily switch back to the coal with the flip of a few switches though.

You can also do a lasgena or no-dig beds to make it easier as you have some compost right in the bed. You can start composing even now and it could provide an extra heat source if used right. I've seen compost be used to heat greenhouses for cold crops and even heat water by burying a pipe under compost. Though, I recommend a double pipe(hose in pipe is cheapest) method to make sure you don't get compost soil in the water, unless you want compost tea for your plants.

I made the fins out of aluminum flashing. You can find it on my website here: Passive-Wood-Stove-Heat-Exchanger.php Yes, larger wires are much better. I will be getting some more 8 and 10 ga soon. I will bring in the golf cart batteries when I get them replace as well and they will be vented.

Green living is just a word that basically means going back to basics, using everything, recycling everything you can reuse over and over and take nothing for granted like my grandparents had to,even my mother who was raised during the depression use to tell me stories. She was born raised in a one bedroom home my grandfather built, with a large wood stove used to heat cook heat water on, outhouse etc. They took nothing for granted, it was survival we have lost too many basic skills.

You could build a box out side for them and insulate it and that would save you some room inside the trailer.

Look into an RV propane unit for heat ... these things are super efficient , versus a different wood burner . Food for thought Good luck bud ! Looks good on the new work bench < A++ !

I dont know. I wanted to do it on the wall, but they said I should not. They are the experts, not me, so I did it on the roof.

you could double the amount of the small cables that would do it. Use two small cables in place of one. Your batteries will last longer.

Good to see your are finally having some better days. Heh heh. Even though I live in the South, I have temperature indifference to the point I where shorts when it's the mid forty(when not windy, moist cold really bits with that). However, those paper towels can also be used for compost as well once you are done using them, though for the summer since you sort of need them for the fire-starters right now.

Seems like you should plumb in a dump valve to drain the cooling system to a bucket outside in case of fan failure.
@grangersmith
@grangersmith 11 лет назад
I have seen long tubes made of cloth with a computer fan inside that sucks the warm air from the ceiling down to the floor to recycle the warm air trapped near the ceiling.Easy to make, one could duct tape cloth (or hand sew) if they had no sewing mach.;D In the summer I suppose it could be reversed blowing hot air out of the window?

Hey, those Eveready 6v. flashlights are great, probably been around for 75 years, I think. Got one in the truck. The battery is still good and is about 5-6 years old. One point on that stove- don`t get rid of it- you might think about building yourself an outdoor kitchen for summer and to make maple syrup in winter.

Sorry about the link, its a wood stove built out of a recycled Heineken beer keg that a survivalist was using in his survival van as an emergency heat source. Perhaps a small one like that would do for those nights the big one doesn't. It uses no electricity, of course you could hook up fans if you wanted. Best of luck

Good to see you doing better. Hope you get the stove situation under control soon. Question: Any recommendations for Solar panels for starters? I do not want to run my house with it but like to have something for backup. I got a Duracell 600 power pack, i replaced the crappy battery it came with to a brand new good one. That should be my battery bank for a start. Any suggestions?

A very small fan will have a significant benefit and draw less power. I've worked on computers many times and a small fan is quiet and effective. use a thermometer and see.

@shartne

where did you get the fins for the chimney? There is no need to vent AGM batteries. So dont worry about them if they are AGM batteries. Also Im guilty of using the small car battery cables but they tell me the giant 00 or tipple 000 cables make the batteries charge last longer they tell me. Because of less resistance. Its suppose to be a must for efficiency I found out so I will be looking for some now.

If you are still considering a heat transfer medium...there is a new antifreeze that is made from corn syrup. It is said to be very low toxicity (not poisonous to Baby). It's "Susterra". Google will guide you to the Dupont, Tate and Lyle website. Once there, people may request a free sample. Perhaps if you tell them your situation and application, they might supply you a larger quantity of it to do your stove. It would be an ideal medium for a solar water heater too. Thanks for your videos.

you should not need a sealed expansion tank, just a open tank that is higher than your stoves top will work fine.. that will allow coolant to expand and contract with temp changes no pressure. think of a cars overflow tank on its coolant system.. same thing.. you have a pump to circulate the fluid no need for a sealed system. liquids will always seek a level..

Those flow and return pipes to the boiler, the bore look way too small they should be at least 3/4" preferable 1" and the heat exchanger dump it and get a domestic convector radiator. The expansion tank should be as high as possible. You have here a messy and resource reliant system which fails
