its very much the same as in the Belgian "version" (if you can call it that) of the Office. Bucky Laplasse and Robert California are bascally the same person, except bucky is more of a sociopath
i had a teacher like that. dude got 3 phd, was in his seventies, spoke 4 languages, owned every room he entered and could not be bothered with small things, like sharing our grades with us. it was torture to be his student and i had nightmares with him. is truly a lot for a 19 year old. he was not a jerk or mean with us, since we barely existed to him.
@@ehonda7831 What? Do you know what a PhD is? To get a PhD you have to contribute an original research thesis to the academic community of a particular field. It has to be accepted as sound for you to get a PhD. The original contribution to the academic field means you have objectively added something more and new to society through your research. It may be a niche topic but you have contributed something unique and irreplaceable to society. And then to become a teacher means that you have decided to take your expertise and give it to younger generations. Teaching manner is personal preference but the guy could've just retired and sat on his ass all day instead he's working as an educator in his 70s. I'm sorry but your comment just drips with insecurity.
@@Mardello1 The standards for a PhD have slipped dramatically. An "original research thesis" requires people to make more and more tenuous abstractions, very few of which actually improve the lives of... anyone. Saying something "unique and irreplaceable" is inherently valuable simply for existing is an absurdity only a sheltered acedemic could believe.
Look at 1:07 So he comes to Dunder Mifflin, applies for a job and he points at Jim like „ok son, your turn to ask me a question”. He really is a man of great confidence. Absolutely love it.
I used Robert's quote in an interview justifying the many career shifts i had, and it did workout for me and they were stunned. I really want to thank the script writer. Update (Jan 22): I am still working at that company, 4 years almost, got promoted twice. First promotion was to move to the headquarters, second one is a senior title. I'll share if there is any update.
@@MrAbbas16 the HR lady asked why did you change careers multiple times , and my answer was its not a career shift, actually am doing the same thing but in a different context. then i finished with Robert California quote starting from " i sit across of a man .. wants to be younger to be loved to be respected" until "there is no such thing as a product" .
'Do I look like someone who would waste my own time?' I'd love to use that in an interview just once, but I have a feeling it would come across as bigheaded.
You definitely should not use that line in an actual interview. However, depending on the vibe and your situation you may get the message across by answering the same question with "One of my strong qualities is being efficient in all aspects of my job. If you think I'm overqualified then this would be a good opportunity to put my major skill into use". Then dare them to give you a problem to solve. Of course, you don't have to solve it correctly if you can exude the confidence of Robert California.
Robert tells Jim that Jim will never be flattened by anyone in a conversation. And then he proceeds to completely flatten him in a conversation. This guy don't play.
Fascinating thing is both Michael and Robert share the same perspective about business. It's not about the selling a product, it's about the human experience.
Not really. If Michael was an interviewer, California would never be hired after saying "There is no such thing as a product". Michael believed in a product, he loved paper, and disliked modern technology. California does not care about the product. That's a huge difference.
@@rafaprost3915 no he will be hired. he will figure out Michael's personality and what he wants and he will get job. robert California was the type of guy who can figure things out and use them to his advantage and to be fair it didn't need much to impress a guy like Michael. just praise him and u r hired
For all salesman, negotiators out there, this is a negotiation master class. What he said is absolutely right, who’s sitting across the table is usually looking for respect and recognition, to be heard. It’s not about the product.
Gasgano What’s decent about flirting with an engaged receptionist? Or constant bullying of a colleague? Or being in a relationship to make someone jealous? People are so blind of Jim’s looks without analyzing his true character.
r carlo that's a very hateful view on his situations. Flirting is not cheating and not morally wrong by any means, especially not if the receiving person endorses it. Then bullying isn't only far reached but completely ignoring that his "victim" is not only doing it himself but can defend himself good enough. And the relationship with Karen was not primarily to make pam jealous. So quit your bias
"Flirting to an engaged is not cheating" that right there means the rest of your argument is crap. People like being flirted genius specially the ladies and most specially if a 6'3" good looking fellow. You're basically saying bullying is okay as long as the victim fights back? Really? Not to make Pam jealous? Explain why Jim broke up with Katy (Amy Adams) for no reason right after Roy set a wedding date? Explain why after Pam told everyone in the campfire that she broke off the wedding because of Jim, he immediately breaks up with Karen and sets up a date with Pam? Your point of view is shallow.
r carlo yeah I'm already done talking to you. Take that as a win, I don't care. You should change your tone if you want discussions and maybe don't tell your opposition that what they say is crap or win by semantics. Have a nice day.
Jim's natural behavior is to bully. When he transferred to Stamford, he still pranks Dwight miles away - the fax from future and gaydar. He then did his classic stapler on gelo to Andy. And when he was informed by Gabe of a company policy regarding commissions that he disliked, he edited Joe Bennett's audiobook as form of revenge. Oh, did I forget to mention that he purposely leaned in so that Michael falls in the koi pond? This is after he helped him how to be a manager, remember the increase salary episode? He also constantly lies and comes up with unlimited excuses whenever Michael invites him for dinner. And for what? The truth is you like Jim simply because he has good looks and smiles to the camera whenever something foolish is said or happens. This is why I like Robert California because he is immune from Jim - the interview and Yeah, I know that I've won even before getting into this argument. It's right for you to withdraw from someone who's seen The Office everyday for the past 5 years and basically know every character like the back of his hand.
I can understand why James Spader was cast as the voice actor for Ultron....He oozes confidence very similar to Tony Stark except its more charismatic.
He can talk about how he had sex with my girlfriend and I will listen to him and end up agreeing that what he did was right and I should thank him for doing it
The funniest part is, Robert Californias character alone is extremely 2 dimensional, but it’s Spaders performance that really makes this character so iconic
Intimidation is bad leadership in my opinion. And Robert has always been very intimidating with the way he communicates. He intimidates people into agreeing with him. Even when he tells them that they're Weak. At least weaker than him. Until his own weakness of sexual passion was exploited by Nellie. A good leader brings out the best in every authentic individual through individual strengths. They are the biggest strengths of an individual because they're developed and driven by true passion and interest. And a good leader presents to his team his/her mindset as a better alternative to their current mindset. All Robert does is present to everyone how they should never be. Robert just wants to show that he stands above everyone else and that's no way to lead. No matter how genius his quotes sound, it's all mental trickery to lead the mind astray from its initial goal and towards questioning the sheep's role as a sheep in this world. This kind of existential crisis might be good to figure out a better alternative to life instead of working forever in a dying paper company. But it doesn't help lead a company and its employees. Robert chose the wrong place to apply at (not that he would care). He is a person that has recognized and accepted life as a pointless journey with a pointless goal and a pointless end with nothing after it. And all he wants to do is have fun with sex and tell everyone about the tragic reality of life, even when it doesn't help, just so he can be seen as a leader and have "the easiest job in the universe".
