The Oilers have lost Chris Pronger after coming within a game of the Stanley Cup. There's still talent on this team, but whether it will be managed correctly is yet to be determined. Welcome to the Decade of Darkness.

@@sandersonmcdonald9124 Eberle deserved to be moved at the time…as the cancerous, dressing room splitting wingman of Taylor Hall. Do some homework if you don’t know about those two during that period. After numerous frustrating seasons of failure, I finally deducted the central issue myself. Multitudes of player & management came & went, yet that poisonous core remained. Years after his retirement, former captain & Edmontonian, Andrew Ferrence came forward with the details. Ironically, Nuge was the only keeper of em all.

Thank you for covering this. I became a diehard oilers fan in 2009 (don’t know how) and I legit have been itching to be educated on the decade of darkness. @sandersonmcdonald9124
@sandersonmcdonald9124 4 месяца назад
Excellent analysis. Made me take a reluctant stroll down a bit of a rough memory lane as an Oilers fan. One addition: the Oilers let Glencross go to the Flames without even giving him a call. That guy was fantastic for the Oilers for the second half of that season, and he was even better for the Flames for even longer. Kevin Lowe was too busy whale hunting to even secure an effective player who wanted to play for the Oilers. That kind of garbage was a significant part of the darkness, imo. Again, thanks for the amazing content.
@fourstew
@fourstew 4 месяца назад
the worst part about the Smyth trade was that they almost re-signed him prior to the deadline, but management for some reason wouldn't budge on the difference between their offer and Smyth's ask, which was reported later to be just $100,000. One hundred thousand dollars kept the Oilers from keeping arguably their most beloved player since the 80s.

@@brianschryver8314 No, I disagree, the return was pretty decent. There are about a thousand examples in the following years of this franchise being terrible during this time period with asset management. For example, blowing the first round pick in that same deal on Alex Plante and later pick Riley Nash never playing a game for the franchise are two horrible moves that almost immediately followed the Smyth deal.

5:54 - 94# Ryan Smyth was INDEED the heart & soul of the Edmonton Oilers for many years. Smyth was a great leader, a steady rock and always gave his best. IMO it is worse then sad how the Edmonton Oilers have not honored him for all he did with retireing 94#. He could easily have gone to a better team, even a contender with what he had to offer a team, but Smyth was like a loyal soldier and stayed with his troop = 14 seasons of 18 in fact that resulted in 971 season games: 296 goals - 335 assists = 631 pts! All in all, Ryan Smith's 18 NHL season career resulted in: 1,270 games, 386 goals, 456 assists = 842 points. 11 play-off seasons (1 Stanley Cup finals) resulted in: 93 games, 28 goals, 31 assists = 59 points. Beside that during his Oilers years he loyaly represented Team Canada in a lot of international championship tournaments including; - 8 IIHF World Championships = 2 gold medals + 1 silver medal. - 2 Olympics (2002 & 2006) = 1 gold medal in 2002. - 1 World Cup (2004) = 1 gold medal. Again, why oh why is not the Edmonton Oilers honoring Ryan Smyth's services by retiring his 94# - He deserves it more then well! Oh he did not win a cup? Tell that to the Maple Leafs by retiring Salming 21# & 13# Sundin for all there great service. Or the Rangers by retiring Lundqvist 30#, or the Flames retired Iginla 12# and Kiprusoff 34# or the Senators Phillips's 4# and Alfredsson's 11#, or Bruins retired Neely's 8# and O'Reilly's 24# etc. The list could go darn on but the point stands!

Thank you for trying to pull together the vibes of the decade of darkness lots of people focus on the 06 season but don't talk about the long build to get to today. CANt WAIT FOR PART 2

Actually... Pronger was pronging someone who wasn't his wife. The ultimatum was either he leave Edmonton or she left him and took all his shit. It had nothing to do with her wanting to be somewhere else. And yes I know this for a fact because I know the (then) young woman that was involved quite well.

The only reason I ever laced up skates was because of the 2006 Finals run. It is tough to really articulate how special being an 8 year old boy going to school in Edmonton at that time was. The unity in town was unlike anything I had ever seen (or have seen since), it was the first time I had ever seen hockey as truly special and because of it, I laced up and played minor hockey here for about 10 years after the fact. My Dad has long said that the most painful moment he ever had as an Oilers fan from Day 1 was that Game 7 loss, he said he had never felt so gutted as a sports fan. I grew up and stuck with this team throughout that entire decade somehow, I am definitely glad its a memory now.

I'm a Ranger fan (thanks for the cup 30 years ago, BTW), but I love watching these docs because I'm always curious as to how Hockey teams rise and fall. The conventional wisdom states that you have to tank for high picks, and the rest takes care of itself, but it's of course never that simple or linear. I remember watching the '06 final in a restaurant in NYC. It was a private event organized by a Canadian friend of my wife. this friend's brother happens to be the one who, no joke, approves the trade calls in the NHL (his last name was Ages). Anyway, the place was full of Canadian ex-pats (whom, as a native NYer, had no idea existed in such large numbers in my city!). The scene after the Oilers lost the deciding game was a morgue, practically, 😕
