Written by Ernest Hemingway in 1951, I uploaded this version as I especially like it, Listened to it one night in Australia on my friends ipod while sleeping on the couch and it is a somewhat torturous yet exciting and beautiful story, this reading I think is very special..made me think of my dad...and his dad..
the picture is of grandad barry who passed away recently.
Hope you will enjoy it,.

There is a reason this is such a classic. You can read it as a child and understand it, even enjoy it. And as you grow up, at looking at it again you notice so much more. I look forward to read this again as an old man.

I absolutely love the way he reads this book. It makes me feel the actual story. I have already read the book, but this time i'm reading it while listening to Charlton Heston. His reading is perfect, and it makes this book all the more beautiful.

This was my first time hearing the story, I cried my eyes out, it felt as though the ocean was washing away the years of his life, that he had the wisdom to endure his hardships and the desire to make the leviathan that is death acknowledge him was overwhelming. The book drowned my heart and filled my lungs with something new.

Thank you for sharing, I personally cant read well as I am a major dyslexic. I am in a IEB school in South Africa which required me to read 7 novels by matric. If you as a reader are reading this and you have children or even yourself that cant read or hate reading, listening to audiobooks such as these or even just playing it in the car on a long trip certainly does help. I listened to this while doing my Business project. Even though I was focused on the project I still took in the book as my self conscious was noticing and listening to the story. I ended having a A in English. So if you are looking for a solution to people not being able to read, rather just listen. Believe me it helps.

Tristan: When I was young, I never took notes. I listened to every word that came out of the teacher's mouth and remembered. Now nearly 90, I have trouble reading but listen to audiobooks every day. If you train yourself to listen, you can improve your memory and so learn as well as people who read well. I can still remember things I heard 60 years ago. Keep up your efforts to listen well.

I look at it from a different perspective. Think of it as the grizzled old man still having the mental fortitude of a man half his age. Battling the giant fish. It takes courage and it takes salt. Old may you be but dead you are not and the old man fought with vigor until the end. That’s why I love this book

I actually had to read this in middle school. We couldn't go online and listen to an entire book. It's nice that we have technology and the net, especially for those who are learning disabled but is causing the human brain cells to atrophy. There is nothing like reading. Reading is truly an act of mindfulness. It opens doorways to places in the mind that could not otherwise be accessed. Namely the imagination.

I saw the original movie when I was probably the age I imagine the boy to be - 11. It was long and torturous, but unforgettable. I tried to read the book years later but it was too tedious and too grim. 36 years later, past midnight and tired but unable to sleep, I listened to this story again. And the movie in my mind was much clearer now than it was when I was the boy. Hemingway was an artist who painted the most breathtaking pictures on the palette of the mind, using only the simplest of colours. Every time I read his stories, I'm reminded that the was Old Man was the maser after all. "Fish," he said softly, aloud, "I'll stay with you until I am dead."

He was sorry for the birds, the small delicate dark terns that were always flying and searching but never finding. The birds have a harder life than we do except for the robber birds and heavy strong ones. "Why did they make birds so delicate and fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel?" She is kind and beautiful, but she can be cruel. And it comes so suddenly, and such birds that fly, dipping and hunting with their small sad voices are made too delicately for the sea.

Kelly oxo thanks for reminding me why books are so important, they transmit and freeze a thought once created in a human mind to be shared

So much better than To Kill a Mockingbird, for me. Why? To Kill a Mockingbirds main character is plain mr nice guy... never changes... this book has character development based on self reflection of the main character. Maybe im too harsh or wrong yet teasing the reader with a character named Boo that really was lame.

Majestic prose or what!

@@jaymorpheus11 The main character in the novel to kill a mockingbird is not really Atticus Finch, but his daughter Scout, who is also the narrator of the story - her character arc changes considerably over the course of the story.

First of all, thanks for uploading this. Second, I read your description and I think it's very sweet. I lost all my grandparents within the last three years. It's little things like this that keep them alive.

It is not the voice of the uploader. Charlton Heston was a popular actor of the Classic Hollywood era, especially in the 1950s and 1960s.

One of the few books I can read and reread. Is the story about man's battle against nature or against himself? Yes, and Hemingway describes the battle with succinct beauty.

As an old man myself I can identify with Hemingway's story. Like many of the students making comments I read a lot of the Literature assignments from CLIFF notes. After College I had more time to read so I went back and read some of those scholl assignments that I had read from CLIFF notes. I discovered I had only cheated myself by not reading the assigned books. THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO got me hooked..I got by with a 3.0 GPA but I think maybe I might have had a3.5
