THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

Actually he is kind of backtracking on that retirement: “That was a mistake. I should never have said that.” “If I’m going to retire, I should just slip quietly away from acting, but I shouldn’t be talking about it because I think it draws too much attention in the wrong way. I want to be focused on this film and the cast.”

Going out or not going out, Redford has always been in style. He's ageless, and one can seem to take eyes off of his easy charm, even as he's full of wrinkles.

A completely acceptable film that doesn't have any frills. Neither predictable nor groundbreaking. A story for it's own sake. It's very Redford. It left me feeling that all the romance has been sucked out of life. What is there left for adventurous men but to give a middle finger to the system? Even doing what you love doesn't make you happy anymore. You know this is his message, and you know it's true.

In this trailer, he had only a brief appearance on screen, though you heard his voice quite a bit. The one that said the line about "I'm not talking about making a living, I'm talking about living". Tom Waits is mainly known as an eclectic singer-songwriter, and arguably one of the best living lyricists. He doesn't limit himself to any particular genre (he's made everything from Irish folk music to punk, from polka to beat boxing). He's wife (and musical collaborator) describes his music as consisting of Grand Weepers and Grim Reapers, and that's about as good a description as any. His music can be an acquired taste, but once acquired, you're hooked. :) He does have an acting career as well - he played the devil in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", and God in "Wristcutters: A Love Story", and was one of the psychopaths in "Seven Psycopaths". He's played various smaller roles in many movies; usually oddball characters, like "Renfield" in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Low key, restrained, understated... something Hollywood doesn't normally do. Robert Redford was ideal for the part and the on screen chemistry between all the characters really starts and finishes with him.

What the hell is Redford's secret to looking waaaay younger than he is? He's freaking 80 years old! He still moves like he did in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Man, the pairing of Redford and Newman was made in heaven. That film still looks good.

What a beautiful way to go out. I know he wanted to do a part two of Butch Cassidy with Paul Newman, but Newman was too sick. This seems like a nod to that film anyway somewhat. Such class, such an icon. What an excellent human being and a phenomenal actor. Thank you Mr. Redford for all you have given us over the years.

I still remember driving to school through downtown Hamilton, Ohio and passing the movie set on High Street. Earlier that year they were doing auditions for extras at Xavier University and they wanted people in 1970s style clothing. I would have gone to that, but I didn't have the right attire. Looks like an interesting movie just by watching the trailer.

They filmed at the Midway Theater and Witchard's gas station here in Bethel, Ohio on April 4, 2017. The boat scene was filmed at East Fork State Park in Clermont County, Ohio.
