New Ukulele Wednesday and Saturday, subscribe and learn!
Today we are doing a popular old hymn that was written in 1912 by George Bennard. George was born in Youngstown Ohio, reared in Iowa, but he wrote this classic standard in the fall of 1912 in the wonderful Albion, Michigan! That is the hometown of flat picking power house and bluegrass riviver Billy Strings who grew up in bluegrass jams with his father.
Old hymns make great pieces for both flat picking blue grass, fiddle, banjo and of course fingerstyle/chord melody ukulele! They mostly have simply chord structures, using the I-IV-V throughout the song with some lovely melodies. The song also has some colorful passing tones in it that really stand out when you play it. While the melody goes up the fretboard all the way to the 8th fret you never have to use barre chords, I do use one barre chord of the G7, but even then you dont need to use the full barre, as G, G7 and C all have familiar shapes up the fretboard thanks to the open G and C strings. This is a great song for someone who feels stuck as a beginner ukulele player and is looking to take the next the step and learn something more complicated as well as ukulele players that have been playing for awhile and are looking to get started with this style of playing.
