the engraving on the cymbal "Royal Harmonie" - orchestra "Aalst" - place in Begium "Gift from Mr. Victor Keppens" - self explanatory "1911" - for completeness
I get why some people don't like them so much in rides anymore, but I have rivets in my bottom hi hat and I kind of swear by it honestly. That little sizzle in the quieter parts of songs really goes.
NOT boring time. I recently found out that I've been beating on a 13" thin crash from the late 40's for about 25 years. I've been using it as part of a stack since I had to rig together a mount to fit the small hole.
A neighbor had an 18 inch cymbal stamped "Zildjian Constantinople" on it. It was SO trashy sounding, and dark. Super low pitched. The edge had dents in them, but no cracks. It was so dirty there was no way to clean it and make it shiny. My neighbor moved to Finland and left me that cymbal and an 18 inch floor tom. I had no idea what I had, and just wanted to play hard rock. So I was only into Bright cutting cymbals, like a Sabian HH Rock Crash, or Zildjian Ping Ride. When I gave up on drumming to go travel the world I sold it all. Somebody scored big.
Oh don’t worry, in the 70’s Zildjian made their first very shiny/heavy hard rock cymbals and called them “A Zildjian Constantinople”. They weren’t amazing and they don’t go for particularly much if it soothes your mind 😂
@@the.drum.thing. As I get back into drumming I've found I my ears handle bright cymbals anymore, at least not without hearing protection. A short while back Zildjian had a sale of 16 and 18 inch A series Medium thins (40% off list) so I picked them up. They'd have been perfect when I was a kid, but now they are physically painful to play if I don't have my custom molded hearing protection in. How my hearing survived being a teenager without any hearing protection I will never know As I look at transitioning from E-Drums (with volume knobs) to acoustics I'm pretty much only looking at darker cymbals these days.
Howly, that engraved text says its a gift to the royal harmonic orchestra of aalst, a city in belgium. How did it end up all the way on the other side of the planet 😂
THIS IS WHAT DRUM THING NEEDS TO BE not like every single video, but like a cymbol showcase with some history, and some jammin with it, and i love how you slipped in the comparison symbol
5:41 "What I'm gonna do with this next song is showcase the power I have as a drummer. The song is going to start off as it's meant to be as a down tempo depressed song. But midway through I'm going to change to rock/metal while the song itself is going to remain the same, including Lewis Hamilton boxing here. The change will be subtle. - S U B T L E- " (AN: I know little about music myself so please dont hate on me if I've got the music styles wrong. _I'm learnding_ )
I really like the shimmery sound of that cymbal. Like, sure, it’s not the loudest, and the rivets make it have a sound profile that won’t fit everything, but it’s SPARKLY and I love that sound.
Hadn't seen riveted cymbals before today; but I really like how they affect the sound, and how they cause it to go quiet quicker. Certainly shouldn't be on every cymbal, but certainly useful!
0:37 fun fact it's dutch and says "Koninklijke Harmonie Aalst Geschenk van M Victor Keppens 1911" which means "Royal Concert Band Aalst Gift from M Victor Keppens 1911". I find it really interesting how some words are the same in English and in Dutch. For instance, you can translate "1911" almost exactly one on one, although you lose a bit of nuance in some contexts so you do have to be careful. Anyway Aalst is a city in Belgium so it's technically not even dutch but Flemish
The jazz and bossa sound gorgeous on both cymbals. The second song makes me hear a difference like the riveted one sounds bright then fades after. Plus the guitar riff reminds me of Makoto Kawamoto's 1/2.
Man, I wish those rivets made a comeback! I'm not very well versed in drums (I prefer my sax lol), but I love the effect of the rivets. Gives it this calm feel, kinda like the patter of rain. I think it would sound nice in jazz, or some other chill music. Just with the cymbal was louder lmao.
Online listings with vague titles can be a goldmine! I once found a mint condition boxed N64 for ten euro, listed only as ‘video game’. It was collection only and the seller lived around three hours away from me, so I drove to get it because a bit of a drive is worth that kind of deal. When I met the woman she said she thinks it was meant as a gift for someone, at some stage, but ended up in her attic.
You’ve talked about this cymbal several times and never in my life did I ever consider that those rivets weren’t solidly attached to the cymbal. I always assumed they were on there to tune the sound
I really like that you compared it to the K Dark Ride after the stream. I was worried that these more analytical parts and comparisons would get lost with the switch to stream but this combination of the "old" drum thing style and the energetic stream parts is great!
Wanna know how deep that "boring time" actually went? The passages in that book are EXACTLY the same kind of thing in the medical college admission test (mcat, generally considered the hardest professional exam in the US) in a section called "critical analysis and reasoning". Ive seen so many passages phrased exactly like that one. Esoteric history passages are going to give me ptsd after this stupid exam is over.
I got so used to the sound of your Zildjian K-Custom Dark Ride by watching your videos. It has simply become the standard ride cymbal in my head and it sounds kinda comforting, while any other ride sounds odd. I listen to metal and stuff but this is the only place I really get to listen to different cymbals and drums and learn stuff about them. Which I really like, I love your content, thank you so much!
idk i like the sound the cymbals make with the rivets in them! i can see how they may not produce a great effect for certain types of music, but i think it gives it character! great vids as always m8
I love the rivets on this cymbal. And honestly a special drum set up with both this and a normal ride would be awesome to improvise with for both flavors and for different parts of a song.
Don’t know what I was expecting going into this, but dunking on Berlioz was not in my top ten things I expected from a Drum Thing vid. I’m here for it though. Up yours Berlioz, this is why people recognize Bizet more than you!
it's funny how the rivets can make or break a cymbal, and for whatever reasons my mind is now filled with thoughts of an L Zildjian completely filled with them
It reminds me a lot of the cymbals that Jack Wilson's quartet used for a few albums. With the right kind of riveted cymbal they can ride out forever, and they have a really distinct sound to them in recordings
I love the sound of that. With all the effects cymbals and stacks, this is a lovely color that needs to come back. It's like a sizzle crash-splash hybrid
Now I've got Istanbul (Not Constantinople) covered by They Might Be Giants going through my head ("Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is a 1953 novelty song, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy and music by Nat Simon.)
I love the sound of a good sizzle crash. On Dear Prudence by the Beatles, you can hear a sizzle crash at the end of the choruses and it sounds beautiful.
