The Olympian Hiawatha was the luxury train of the US railway company Milwaukee Raod
He drove from 1947 to 1961.
The route began in Chicago via Milwaukee, St. Paul, Miniapolis, Mobridge, Miles City, Three Forks, Yellowstone, Butte Missoula, Spokane across the Columbia River Seattle / Tacoma in Washington state, to the Pacific Northwest. A range of over 2200 miles in less than 2 days.
The train was fully air-conditioned, equipped with adjustable seats, a coach with cocktail lounge, and one with a large gourmet kitchen as well.
The highlight was probably the observation car designed by Brooks Stevens at the end of the train, there was the Skytop Lounge with the glass pulpit, which provided a magnificent view.
This footage was filmed in the year 1952 and narreted by Carter Reynolds.

I lived and worked by the Milwaukee tracks along the Black foot river and rolled the mile long tunnel and the trail itself on the Hiawatha bike trail before they opened it up. A lot of history along those tracks...

love it, gorgeous film - love the end, hitting the huge Beverly bridge at speed and then charging through the Cascades under full electric power with a final drink in that amazingly sexy end of train lounge car.

The Milwaukee Road's 'Olympian Hiawatha' reminds me of Europe's beautiful and luxury trains under the wire traveling through the Alps and Norwegian mountains. Bill Bates

I rode that train from Tomah to Three Forks in 1958. Wonderful times.

Interesting how the rail passenger services of old smoked amtrak - and without subsidies.

Milwaukee road went into bankruptcy multiple times. Oops. Econ 101 is over that way.

US Mail helped defray the cost of passenger service. When the mail was taken off of the railroads, the end of passenger service was inevitable.

@@cats0182 This happened in 1967, I believe. For NP fans, loss of this contract eventually doomed North Coast Limited and Mainstreeter. The Mainstreeter was the heavy mail hauler; in 1960 I recall a 20-car train leaving St. Paul. I detrained at Perham.

🤔 Apparently, Carter Reynolds, the narrator, must have missed the train that day? 🎙

I don't understand why more railroads didn't buy those cool looking observation cars.

They were Milwaukee designed and built at Milwaukee shops.
