What makes it work is that he isn't really doing anything evil in the film. It's the satanists and suppose natural events and accidents that are responsible. But it's the fact he's at the centre that creates this evil atmosphere

But in the end the paranoia was totally justified.

That film for me is the weak link out of the three. The acting was great but the plot drags on, has no stand out scenes but the end reveal is so well known that the suspense feels rather tedious

Nah. One Winged Angel is Nobuo taking "Rite of Spring" and adding guitars. As he explained, he wanted it to add the "destructive nature of rock n roll, like Jimmy Hendrix burning a guitar" to the classical music, namely Rite of Spring, which resembles in many parts One Winged Angel

It's a lot closer to some of the FF8 themes. Some of them are pretty creepy. Succession of Witches has a really cool atmosphere to it

I think it was supposed to be happening quicker, considering the speed we see the rod falling at originally, but give the viewer that nightmarish feeling of not being able to move fast enough to avoid the threat.

That is mostly Hollywood and a bit translation lost in the bible issue. Jackals have been mentioned in the bible, but the translation could have been lost. "Tannim" was translated in the King James Version as "Dragon", while others translated it as "Jackal", and the Arabs as "Sea Monster". Some believe that the mention of Jackal in the bible refers to something not of God, removed from God. So it is more figurative, and Hollywood took it literal. Maybe Satan just like him some doggystyle? I dunno.
