I've bought and rebuilt multiple salvaged bikes. If you're even slightly mechanically inclined it can be a great deal. The paperwork can be a bit of a hassle but if you're saving 40-60%, it's worth your time.

The company that built that motorcycle provided the tools necessary to allow rape, torture and murder in the 40's. America funded these bastards to build vehicles after the war and allowed the them to flood North American Markets to break existing manufacturers. Where people expected fair pay for fair work. Insurance companies will disclose the reason for total loss.

A couple things of note. If a bike does get a salvage title and it was stolen the VIN number was in a database indicating that the bike was stolen. In the event you get pulled over it’s very possible that the VIN was not removed from the database. At minimum the bike will get impounded and you’ll have to fight it out with the courts. At the worst, you’ll be arrested too. It’s up to you to make sure you know where the bike was stolen from and that it’s a clear VIN. Usually you can take the VIN to a police station and they can check it for you against a national database. Do this before buying the bike, even if you are buying from a dealer. Also, make sure your insurance will cover a salvage title vehicle. You’ll almost never get comprehensive coverage on the bike. Also, it’s nearly impossible to get a loan for salvage title vehicle. Think about it. A salvaged Ultra Classic CVO Harley Davidson would still book out at 18 to 20k. Better have cash for it.
@EasternNCSportbikes

Different states different requirements for salvage titles. Here in NC in my city it takes 25% of the vehicles value (even says on the titles) to salvage a vehicle. Vstars are not valued at much so 25% isnt much at all. Add up labor paint and a gas tank boom 25%.... I buy and sell and part out salvage vehicles from the auctions for a living. I currently ride a salvage title zx14 theft bike that was laid down. I myself don't mind buying salvage title anything if I can see the damage. I don't like buy "other sellers salvage rebuilds" because they throw some plastics or bumpers on the thing and hide the underlying damage. Also Getting a salavage title vehicle on the road is simple here. If I buy a salvage title wrecked car (still wrecked) from any other state out of NC, I can bring the title to the DMV and get an automatic tag as long as I have insurance because they grant you a 1 year inspection being its from out of state. so just because its hard there doesn't mean it is here. so that bike could have been wrecked and rebuilt here and ended up there because we have no big rules about putting them back on the road. I love buying good stuff for 1/4 the price but thats just me!

I got a V Star 1300 tourer about 2 years ago, and I love the thing. That's going to make somebody a really good bike. By the way, my V-Star makes bike number 38 for me personally. Not counting dirt bikes. Anyway I'm not sure I would rate it as a beginner bike, more of an intermediate. It's very user-friendly and easy to ride but even with the low center of gravity it is kind of heavy. And that could catch a new rider out pretty quickly. I would at least recommend New Riders invest in a set of highway bars for those low speed learning drops. Lol

Can't speak for PA but I've bought over 30 salvage title bikes. I used to be an insurance adjuster and we were basically instructed to just total bikes as it was a much better deal for the company. Of all the bikes I adjusted only a handful ever went in for repair. In SC and NC salvage or rebuilt titles are treated like normal titles with nothing special to do and no inspection required. I'll gladly save 25-50% of the going price for a salvage title. Only one of the ones I've bought ended up being not easily fixable and so it was parted out. Still got my money back. And I've never had a problem getting full coverage insurance on the salvage title bikes I own, 3 currently.

I bought a 98 XL1200C in Fawn Grove, Pa. it had an R title because it lunched the motor. The guy I got it from never touched after getting it from an auction. The cases were fine and I rebuilt it. @jaminberg9323
@jaminberg9323 5 лет назад
most states to total a vehicle is around 70-75% damages compared to value. in Nebraska if you fix it the title goes from salvage to "prior salvage" if someone spent 10 minutes with a key vs your paint that would total most bikes

Brand new Honda crate motor 2000 miles ago. New custom paint. PC3/Hypercharger Cobra exhaust, new shocks etc. You get the idea. I looked at quite a few "green title" bikes, some with less miles. My salvage bike = laid over a new CBR600RR after a couple months back in 2010. 1 livable fairing crack, but the scratched/ gouge in the frame was the reason for the total. @barrygoodson4952
@barrygoodson4952 5 лет назад
You can usually go back to the original salvage company and find the exact reason the bike was salvaged. Always check the frame especially the welds. If there is paint popped of the welds you can be sure there was structural damage aka bent frame. That doesn't mean it's up repairable. People are shocked that some bikes are salvaged that do not appear to have significant damage. Bike parts can run up price wise quickly not including the labor to repair. Also check with you insurance company to be sure they cover salvage titled bikes, not all insurance companies will insure them. Also the coverage will be significantly less should you have a accidently. Retail wise they bring about 50% of normal retail as a guideline. Sometimes a little more or less depending on the market and availability . I have owned quite a few and as long as you check them out well you should have no uncommon issues and you save a few bucks to boot !

Probably wouldn't get this bike but if you're a new rider looking for your first bike. I would definitely give a salvage a chance. Ride it for a few minutes. Check that all the gears work. It doesn't act funny as you pick up speed. The engine is smooth. Etc. You're probably going to drop it anyways. Trade it back and forth between friends to get used to riding before buying a good bike. Get some good use out of it. Just make sure it gets checked out by a mechanic or a friend who knows what they're doing

Just a story to share...I.bought an 03 Harley Road King. I have performed all of servicing. It is now 18 years old with 79,000 miles clocked. Here is what has been done to this bike: oil and filter changes @ 3000 mile intervals, 3 batteries, 4 sets of rear brake pads, 3 sets of front brake pads, 6 rear tires, 3 front tires, 2 windshields, one headlight, and nothing else. Still has original irridum sparkplugs. Timing chains and tensioners were checked @50,000 miles and showed only slight wear. I use 20/50 Kawasaki lawnmower oil, 140 wt gear oil in trans, and Lucas primary oil ( also changed every 3000 miles ). This bike has never failed me. I intend to ride it for the rest of my life. Everyone tells me that they have never heard of a story like mine. Has anybody out there had as good luck as I've had with my bike? To me, this has been the best money that I have ever spent. Not a US citizen, so all this title stuff you've got going on there is really strange to me. But if the bike was properly rebuilt or repaired, got inspected and was declared road worthy again, why don't they just drop the whole R-title malarky and issue a new, clean title? We have a sort of similar thing here, if a vehicle has a WOK-status, you can only get that sorted by taking it to a specialised inspection, where the vehicle is checked to see if it still meets it's homologation criteria and therefore can be re-registered under it's certificate of conformity. Or it can have to have an individual inspection done, which when passed yields a new certificate of conformity. Either way, as soon as either inspection is passed, the WOK-status is removed from the title and the title is essentially clean again.

Lol... Florida man... Local sheriffs look at the bike to determine if the bike is safe... and verify the vin... then provide their signature. It's that easy

Before you buy an R title, call your insurance company. Mine refused to cover a Mustang GT I was looking to buy solely based on the recovered title.

Probably more likely to happen with a car, because if improperly repaired it wont protect you correctly in a bad crash.

So would a buyer be able to get the info to show what was wrong with it? If not, it'd be hard to value.

So if someone in Ohio bought this bike would they get from you guys a bill of Sale that we could use to prove to Ohio BMV ownership and use that Bill of Sale during the inspection of the motorcycle? Or would Ohio want to see something fixed?

My car has a rebuilt title. What was the cause? A deer ran into the door and quarter panel. Fixed the door and quarter. Just cosmetic damage, no physical damage. Took it to the Louisiana State police office had them look at it got the paperwork. Went to the DMV. Paid them im good.

Too much money in my opinion. Look around on FB Market Place...you can get one for not much more that's not an "R" title....just my opinion...I wouldn't pay that much for that bike with a salvage title. Here in Ohio theres a dealership that sells nothing but salvage title bikes. Check out there prices, it's called Racers Edge..

I was on CycleTrader and the bike was listed on Racers Edge with you guessed it, salvage title, no wonder the price was lower than most. Took a look at their listings and most are titled as such. But there was no mention of that on CycleTrader 🤔

I have bought at least 10 salvage bikes from Racers Edge (mostly Harley’s). I fix them like new and ride them until I want to do another project. I’ve sold most on Craig’s List at a discounted price or traded back to Racers Edge. They are good people! The bikes I by from them have a Ohio Salvage title. One I do the repairs here in Pittsburgh, I take the bike to a local enhanced inspection shop. They do all the paperwork and take the required pictures for the state and send it in. About three weeks later, I get my rebuild title. Enhanced inspection is about $280.00. Never a problem with getting insurance.

If the rider stopped at a stop sign, had a heart attack (and died) and the bike dropped on its side, its now an accident with fatality and salvage.

I’d run it through DMV just to see or have someone run the vin through a PD. I know a few ppl in NJ. I’d buy it and find out how to flip it for my use. I’m looking for a 1300 or above.

Rebuilt bikes/ cars are 100% ready to be plated and titled. Lets also be clear that you CAN NOT plate a SALVAGE title bike at all. You need to stop using SALVAGE and REBUILT as interchangeable title types because they are not. Salvage title are the ones that take work getting them to rebuilt but its not a big deal. You just have to show a parts list. And to boot in my state there is no inspection to get the bike road legal other than to check the VIN to make sure nothing is stolen. Also you are WRONG on what totals a bike. It has nothing to do with using OEM only parts and its not over 100% of the of the market value of the bike. A bike (or car) gets a salvage/rebuilt title when the cost of the repair (with new, used or re manufactured parts) exceeds 70% of the market value of the bike. And all of that has a BIG variance of what will and wont be totaled. The mood of the insurance company adjuster, the owner when it was wrecked, the current cost of fixes (labor cost, paint cost, parts cost). Been in the business doing this for 25 years and my dad has been doing it for 40+ years. Also values of rebuilt titles are generally 2/3 of clean title comparable machines.

Yeah, back when i was looking for a bike last time i came across a dealer bout 2 hours west of SRK. Every bike they had was R title... and most any of them you could tell it was. Most didnt have a smooth surface on any metal part, tank, fenders, accents... so i just stopped looking there. Any bike there could easily just be an auction bike at Copart(where wrecks go to be sold after insurance writes them off). but as i am like 2 years late on this video... and i already have a 950 tourer that is likely worth more then this.. dont worry i wont buy this bike :p
