She is not a nerd. She is a dedicated, knowledgeable, and expert craftsperson and instructor. Would you call a doctor a medical nerd? Expertise in any given field requires focus at the exclusion of other fields. This does not make one a nerd.

@@DCFunBud While I truly appreciate and thank you for the intent behind your words, I do consider myself a nerd lol! But I don’t find the term derogatory at all. One of the definitions of nerd is to be singularly focused on the intellectual and technical aspects of a specific field of study. So in a way a Dr is a medical nerd lol!

A book by Barbara G Walker, "Knitting from the Top," was the book that changed the way I knit. I went from faithfully following instructions for items that I wanted (and sometimes being disappointed with the results), to designing whatever I want, and having the items turn out perfect! I now have several books by Barbara G Walker. That reminds me... it's almost time to give myself another one!

Barbara Walker is the best, the crest, the works. Back in 1972 or thereabouts, I kept getting weird results when I was following one of her patterns. I wrote to her, and she wrote right back (this in the day when there were no word processors, just typewriters or pen and paper) clarifying the instructions. I was still getting weird results, with the number of stitches varying from row to row. I really wanted the shawl I was working on, so I packed the whole kit and caboodle up, needles, yarn and all, and mailed them to her, with a SSAE. She was so gracious, and found that I was doing one of her moves incorrectly, and explained how to do it correctly. I still have that gorgeous shawl (I think the pattern was called "frost flowers", fairly complex). I would not have it without the generous, kind, intelligent help from Barbara Walker. I believe she is also the author of "The Feminist Tarot" which I also own and treasure. She is a treasure.

I have a Japanese stitch dictionary that I really enjoy. They have pictures of swatches and charts for the patterns. I don't remember if they are described with words, but it wouldn't matter since I don't read Japanese. Their charts are not quite the same as they use some different symbols, but a bit of study of the picture usually shows what is going on. I also have a Nicky Epstein book of edgings that has lots of neat ideas.
@WatchBarbaraKnit

I have a small Japanese book that is supplementary to the Japanese stitch dictionaries that explains what all of the symbols mean, of course it is also in Japanese. But it has good illustrations and I can usually figure it out LOL.

I love stitch dictionaries. Unfortunately, our library was flooded. I dont know how many books survived. It was pretty ugly. And I call myself a bookaholic. When I was in high school the eye dr thought I was straining my eyes by reading so much so they limited me to 50 pages a day, including schoolwork. It was horrible! I used to read one 200 page book a day at school between classes. I started sneaking in the library stacks and pulling interesting books off to read, until my mom told the librarians. Then anytime I went in the stacks one of them would soon be there asking if it was school related.🙄 Thankfully I did the family laundry and the laundry room had a door. I would hide books in the clothes, do laundry and read to my hearts delight.😁

After watching one of your other book videos I ordered A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. I am a completist. I'm surprised I managed to convince myself to buy the second book before buying the first book. I'm sure I'll eventually have to acquire the others. I love the look of color work and cables, but haven't gotten brave enough to try either yet. I think I've just about talked myself into getting over that. I bought the No Mr. Bond scarf pattern last night. Did you say something along the lines of it's only needles and it's only yarn in one of your videos? I think that's where I heard it. It reminded me of the Quilting Marine's it's only fabric and it's only thread motto. I haven't gotten very far with quilting either, but reminding myself that it's only fabric and it's only thread, I did convince myself to attempt a LeMoyne Star block with y seams. Like color work and cables in knitting, I'm really drawn to star blocks in quilting. Now I just need to keep reminding myself that it's only needles and it's only yarn in knitting.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 года назад
I find it even more so in knitting. When you mess up in knitting you can frog it out and poof, you have yarn again. In sewing, once the fabric is cut ... it stays cut LOL.
@kevinmonceaux2101
@kevinmonceaux2101 2 года назад
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Good point. In that respect knitting can be more forgiving. After sewing a block in quilting, if points don't match, one can rip out the seams and try again. But when cutting fabric, once it's cut, it's cut. It's definitely beneficial to measure twice and cut once instead of the other way around.

I have Barbara Walker’s Learn-to-Knit Afghan Book which I am using to learn new stitches however when I am looking to expand upon the basics a treasury would be great. Of the 4, would the 2nd a stand alone on its own for variety?

100%. If you only have room/budget/desire for one of them the second treasury is the way to go.

I love stitch dictionaries but i never know how to use them past like fun swatches. I've tried a few times to use the stitches in basic patterns but so far my playing has not gone well.

Well, this book gives guidance in that regard. Might be worth a look?

For a basic stitch dictionary, is the first one the best? I want a hard copy of different stitches combinations and cables so I don't have to look things up online. Are the basics from the first book included in the second? Thanks....

No, there isn't overlap between the books. If I were only to get one it would be the 2nd one. It is bigger!

What would you recommend for someone that is dyslexic like myself? I can't follow a pattern without actual physical eye pain and disorientation. But if I understand the concept and practice, I can make it work. It's the main reason I don't get patterns. They are mainly design suggestions to me. but I feel it's a barrier.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit Год назад
Not having to have overcome that challenge I am afraid I do not have any experience based advice for you. I will tell you that I have had some dyslexic students tell me that they find charts much easier to follow than written patterns. But I've also known people with dyslexia who can't follow charts at all. You could give them a try if you haven't tho.

@@WatchBarbaraKnit charts are worse than patterns. But if you want to know if a chart is badly written, ask a dyslexic. Thank you for the reply!

Do you have a pattern available for the beautiful sweater behind you? Love your channel.

That is not a sweater, it's a scarf called No Mr. Bond I expect you to die and you can find it here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/no-mr-bond-i-expect-you-to-die

I Love your everything, when I need to know something I always turn to u first. My library has diddly for knitting. I have purchased a few though I don't have yours yet. However I have not found the answer to a purling continental whilst pulling the yarn thru differently. Any books I should look into besides all of them? Thanx
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 года назад
I cannot think of a book specifically on continental but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I am uncertain what you mean by "pulling the yarn through differently" tho.

@@WatchBarbaraKnit thank you for responding. I watched a video of yours a while back about. Stitch legs and twisting stitches... Cant remember which one .By pulling the yarn thru differently I think to mean "Russian Purling" you don't wrap you kinda swipe and grab so the stitch ends up backwards on the other needle. I can not knit a back leg knit stitch with any accuracy so I geuss I'm back to wrapping. Thank you.

@@carynmakes9387 I use the "grab & pull method" for purls with my combined method of knitting. You just have to learn to read your knitting and slip the needle through the leading leg from the correct direction on the return row. Some practice swatching and you should have it figured out.

Hi Barbara! How would one take those knitting patterns to the next step and use them for garments? Is there a book/video/class on designing knitwear using knitting pattern found in the books you reference? Thanks!
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 года назад
I am confident that there are classes and books out there on design but I am not familiar enough with any of them to recommend something. And unfortunately for my viewers like you, I don't design garments so I'm not particularly helpful in that medium.

You can take a basic pattern and add the stitch design to it. Ann Budd has a good book on designing top down sweaters in various weights of yarns and she may have some hints on adding a stitch design to them
