As a professional FPV drone pilot, I take offense in how unbelievable true this is. Most shots are really really good just by flying in a single direction. Keep it steady, keep it stable and keep it going. 👌
I fully agree. Like Mum says, simple is beautiful. It's so easy for us to complicate things, and whilst with enough planning, effort, practice and time a complicated move can be incredibly useful, we often forget the simple moves that require very little time and effort are also packing quite the punch, and can be fantastically effective. I wish I could fly FPV well, I try, I train, but my brain just feels like barfing.
@@PhillipSkraba FPV is fun and all but last summer I had a full season of drone recording for a TV show and they only wanted Mavic shots; no FPV stuff. I quickly learned that the best shots were simply the easiest to make. Just point the camera and make a move and keep the move going. They used an enormous amount of such footage in that show. Easy work. Low effort. High payoff (both financially and watching so much your work on TV).
@Ronny King FPV this can actually apply to FPV as well. I find it comical how we're "flying" so you instantly think the goal is height but the best looking fpv material is as low as possible, straight and fast.
@@skydogfpv Totally true. While from a technical perspective, doing all kinds of crazy moves is very challenging and rewarding but the bottom line is that people just don't like that footage. For most it's a lot more fun to watch high speed, low altitude, smooth sailing footage. I'm good with that 😁
So true! Sticking to one axis of motion works 99% of the time. Adding a tilt or a roll can occasionally be helpful but it's normally only something I'd use for an opener or closing shot.
I think being able to go to places that are worthy of a good drone shots is most of it in my opinion. Your very lucky to have filmed those beautiful places.
This was so good! Keep. It. Simple. Stupid! You are so tuned into the bare essential. This video cuts straight to the core. “A cinematographer should remain invisible.”. And your style, grading, subtle humor, and just plain coolness is incredibly enjoyable to watch. Informative, educational, entertaining. Great tips! Love your vids!❤
@@PhillipSkraba I mostly agree with you, Phillip. I'm with you for moving forward. Also for the composition, the color grading, the music (I'm also with Artlist). But sometimes you need some variation in your movements, otherwise your videos are going to be visually great but boring. That's why I insert once in a while one or two circle shots in my videos to break the monotony.
@@sylvainbaril3909 Oh yes, I'm with you on that. This is a move we forget about thought, the power and simplicity of it really is amazing. Learning how to use the lighting and scenery to your advantage is another thing, for another film. Thanks!
the most f**king awesome and important ideas of this video: give the visor the opportunity to dive deeper in your footage, give the possibility to see details. and yeah, no profit without composition and planning of the footage. Phillip, that is great how you provide the info, thanks.
Exactly!! Lucky you dropped those stars or YT would have flagged this lol and your comment would have been lost forever. Yes, always plan, even with the simplest moves. I love creeping, it really allows the viewer to dive deep into the details. Thank You!
Before you revealed the answer, I was saying in my head by moving forward. And that was it. When i fly my drone i try to experiment with different shots, but i always like the forward shot the most out of them
Phil, I love your passion and the way you deliver your story to us, the humble amateurs. I plan to be droning this weekend and will certainly take your advice on board - just push forward. Thank you.
Thank You! I'm really glad you like it, I do my best to get my ideas and experiences across. Well, that'll be the perfect time to just creep forward in that case.
I’m new to this, with my first drone - a mini 2. I learned this point you are making on my second sequence. The very first one I took lasts 1 minute 8 seconds. I shot it at sunset, with some cloud cover, and flying into the sun. I used iMovie without doing anything but put a music clip on it, and trimmed off the takeoff. It was just a forward shot - I wanted to keep it simple. And I really like it! Then a few days later, I went out and took some more videos. The weather here is cold, so I have to learn patience - to wait for just the right flying weather. I used a couple of batteries this time. And I flew all over town as the sun rose. I got home, uploaded the shots to my computer, and hated it. Nothing looked great. I was all over the place. I ended up cutting most of it, and getting a shot about a minute long that… was a straight, forward movement: press on! Thanks for this. I made notes on a few RU-vid videos: 30 moves you need to master. Yes. One. At. A. Time. Love your sequences. A mentor you are.
Wow!! Your reply to everyone! I have been following for a while now! Thank you for your excellent delivery and for the reminder of simple is beautiful. I really needed that! Keep rocking!
Well, I do try to reply to everyone. Right now I'm in a hotel room, getting my two kids ready for breakfast downstairs and about to run out to Warsaw for a bit of walking around, comments, well, I get to those when I can. Yes, simple is beautiful and if used correctly can be immensely powerful. Thanks!
Hey Philip, it's good to see you pushed forward with a new drone video. Pun intended.... Simple is better... I agree. I find I make things harder for myself. I need to look forward and push forward. Greg
I just upgraded from the Mini to the Mini3 Pro and I hope I don’t need the refresh too often! I have a lot to learn but so far I really like it. Always pushing forward and learning…. Greg
That is fantastic Greg!! What an upgrade that is! I hated the transmission on the v1, it was the worst thing ever, it drove me crazy. The Mini 3 Pro, is by far one of the best drones I've ever flown, you will love it! Always, always keep pushing forward, have fun!
Your drone shots are truly amazing and you are very talented! I notice you often shoot in very low light and I would be happy if you did a video on your settings for this. I have the Mavic 3 Classic.
Nice video! I totally (almost) agree 😅 This move is a safe one and it always works with the right composition and lighting. This is the move I recommend to my friends who are new drone owners, especially if they are doing work for others. It is also a move I do at least once on every location. That said, you miss a whole lot of opportunities if you go through your drone life with only doing that move. I know that is not what you mean, but I guess it depends on what video you’re making. You have some beautiful drone shots in your video, no doubt about that. But if you’re doing a video from one single location you have to use a variety of drone moves in my opinion. Anyway, this was a great video that got me hooked and engaged so you’ve done your job 😃
now that you mentioned it. I use this in my edits alot. when the shots are boring I just give it a slow zoom in the post. it makes it much more fun to watch.
Great advice Phil was not expecting that tip at all but as mentioned before years ago you are best filmography ever those colour grating luts are just amazing must get some one day
I’m new to this but have a reasonable eye (or two). Where I live in Portugal there are some great undulating hills that I’m trying to get a feeling almost like they’re changing shape. Your suggestion of straight shooting is great but what about forward with a little left stick one way and right stick the other so that the central point we’re moving to stays the same while the edge of the shot moves and changes? Definitely lock the sticks. My challenge is to find a movement I like and then stay locked in so your suggestion to push from low down will be tried because when I get home and look at the shots it’s annoying if I’ve jerked them even slightly. Tilt down the back up. Brilliant. I hadn’t thought of that or even why it makes a difference but now it makes total sense and I can’t wait to get back out and try some of this new stuff. Cruise control on the Mini 3 Pro would be great especially if it included the positions of both sticks. All good stuff thanks 🙏
I was yesterday in my room looking for videos and practicing a lot of moves lol 😂 and you’re 100% right about that! This simple tip will save me a lot of time
I'm very much a novice drone user and do try; this simple tip is something I didn't think of as such..... thank you for this. Up until now I've been using the RU-vid music as backing > just had a look at Artlist thanks to you I have now started utilising it in my videos (yep, better quality and choice of music for me). Using your advice of "slowing" down my drone footage / moves has I think (hope) much improved my recent 2 videos and hopefully those to come. Thanks for your tips / advice.
Amazing scenery and great footage! I subscribed to see more Videos made by you. Dji Mini 2 is an awesome little drone. I own one myself too and create cinematic Videos. Keep it up bro, i love it ! 👌🏽
Thank You! Yes, it gets a little easier if you have amazing scenery in front of you, but even in mediocre scenery with good lighting you can create some incredible shots.
What a wonderful video again, don't make it too complicated, even I get this! ;-) After purchasing the LUTs for the Mini2 some time ago, I just bought the LUTs for the Mini3Pro from you. Unfortunately I suffer from color blindness, the LUTs make color grading a bit easier for me. Thanks again!
Thank You! Yes, simpler is a lot of the time much better, and it goes for drone moves too. Thank You so much for supporting my channel by using my LUTs, and that's great to hear that they can help you grade 🤘🏻
Really enjoy watching your channel. Your drone footage is very professional. Just flew for the first time today. Can't wait to try your tip tomorrow. Thanks
Hi phillip. I used to fly my drone high and with complicated moves. Often it was boring to watch. Its changing through time with more experience and informations like this. I learnt to fly lower for the movement in shot and do some nice original ideas. Great video as always.
You’re welcome! Sometimes it’s best just to go back to the drawing board, that often proves to be the most beneficial. Keep it simple, it’ll turn you into a pro in no time 🤘🏻
Thanks for the video, I like your style keep it up, I enjoyed your content it's different to other drone vloggers and I like that, will be watching more of your content
Hey buddy thanks again for the best tips. I always learn with you and that thumb tip was awesome. I always had problem to fly straight and I´m gonna try your tip tomorrow. Thanks man, you´re the best!
Flying straight isn't as easy as it sounds, that's true. I usually use the thumb off the stick, but pushing the stick method, that works and keep the drone stable.
Namaste - Please share what app that you're using to add captions to your videos? I love you and your tutorial videos. Not only are your videos creative and informative but you share so much eye candy too. Beautiful! Your production level makes it look like it was shot by Hollywood. You are my favorite video aerial photography artist. Thank you in advance and keep living in the moment.
Lol, I've seen that on other Artlist sponsored videos, and to be honest I used Epidemic when I started RU-vid, but I found Artlist to be way easier to navigate, to find music and I love the diversity Artlist brings to the table. Thanks!
Sure, you can do that, but what if a fire breathing eagle attacks you and you need to drop them hammer and you have put a limit on said hammer, you'll end up a smokey drone barbecue and the eagle will be laughing.
I came across your channel by accident (this episode was played after Philip Bloom's recent video) So I'm like 3 min. in and I am like... Was that Warsaw? I couldn't tell you were Polish ;) Great content! I love your cinematic drone shots! Great stuff! subscribed!
haha I think that’s called serendipity! I still haven’t watched Philips episode, I met him once at NAB, and I really admire him and his work. It’s funny, we are actually are from the same part of London, I am however 100% Polish blood. Thanks for the kind words, and welcome to the channel 🔥
Brilliant! And by the way, your LUTS have also made my life easier. With Plug-and-Play and Pop generally the only corrections I might make are to adjust the intensity of the LUT effect using Final Cut Pro.
@@PhillipSkraba Will the Mavic Mini 3 Pro be adequate for most situations. I have the Mini but want a better camera and tracking. Thought about the Air 2S and Mavic 3 but guessing that the Mini 3 Pro will get the done for the price and the RC controller. It’s a hobby for me! Your thoughts! My email is in all my videos should you want to reply in that fashion.
Man you are brilliant. Thank you for this underrated tip. I am about to get a DJI mini 3 pro and I gotta learn a lot from you. Watching your vids since long. Finally, I will be able to use the knowledge to get started with my first ever drone. Your shots are fabulous. Are all of this shot from Mavic 3/classic or mini 3/pro? I noticed little noise in the shadows.
Thank You! Yes, Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro mostly. I get noise as sometimes I film when it's basically dark, but I don't let the noise bother me as long as I get the shot.
I just crashed my new mini 3 the other day and the 1 salvagable footage I was able to take from the day was pushing in over a river (which I crashed into later that day).
This is so beautiful. I am inspired. Hoping you can guide me. I was hoping to drone videos via my Mini 2 on the Scottish highlands in June. Do you reckon I buy the ND4+ND8+ND16+CPL or ND8/PL+ND16/PL+ND32/PL+ND64/PL filters? Thanks much.
Thank You! I'm glad to hear you're inspired. I think you'd need an ND8, ND16 and ND32 if things get really sunny out there. As for PL, well, that's personal preference really, I use them a lot when flying in straight lines, they can screw the shot up if you're panning left and right.
Yes I have watched over hundreds and maybe hours of different styles and control movements videos, but they all suddenly disappear because of different elements within the timeframe and locations. But this one I will never forget how to do because basically it is one of the easiest, most useful maneuvers that you can do with Less screw ups of trying to make the videos. Yes you can learn 100 or more styles but you have to practice and be good at at least one of them. Thanks for the confidence one style at a time.😅
It's funny, a lot of us forget to use this move and we search for more complicated ways of getting our shot. Sometimes this is the most powerful, and yet the simplest. Thanks!
Thank You! Well, I usually fly forward in a variety of different ways, low creep, Top Gun flyby, high flyby, far away forward, and then if I get all the cool shots I want I'll do an orbit, maybe a top down, a tilt, a reveal. Those are usually shots that are quite fancy, and I leave them for the very end in case they don't work out.
1. The view does not have to be majestic, the light does. 2. Yes. Honourable mention: Reduce colour grading to 1 second with my LUTs. No edges were harmed or smoothed out during the filming of this video. Thank You.
Enjoyed the vid, thanks. I am an experienced landscape fotog but new to drones. Just purchased a dji Mini 3 Pro. Question - what software do you recommend for color grading & editing. AM experienced with Adobe Lr & Ps but those do not work for video, I believe. Thank you!
Somehow, i think environment plays a role. I tried this in a field near home, and something... some magic thing... was just missing. Same with that parking lot... Are you going to cover right stick BACKWARD in the next one? 😉 You devil, you will just reverse the shot in post. Hopefully there's no birds flying backwards. 😬 Thanks Philip! 👍
Oh yes, the scenery has a huge impact, but time of day and lighting can change any boring and what seemed like a horrible background into something quite spectacular, try that field when things gets freaky in terms of lighting, get low and creep it. haha, yep, I did a little reversing in this video as had a couple of pull out shots. Thanks!
@@PhillipSkraba Yes sir lighting is a huge factor in the look and feel of a shot. A bit of creeping mist in the grass wouldn't hurt either. My point was, it's NOT what you do or how you do it. Not the subject. Not the ambient conditions. It's all of it. It takes talent to capture things in an artistic way. Your first posted video using the Telephoto lens on Mavic 3 is a perfect example of art vs "job". Brilliant. If you could bottle it - you would have it in a bottle. Not sure why the he'll you would want that in a bottle. But whatev.
@@BlairAir Hell, I'd never bottle it! Lol, I like you, you're crazy. Anyway, as you noticed, It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean. As they would say in my part of town, "If you ain't go it, you ain't go it".
@@PhillipSkraba Dontheybsay that? You live in a weird part of town. I think 🤔 I could blend in. Better than my cousin Vinny could in Alerbamer in any event. Would I have to eat grits? Because I don't like grits. Too... uh, what's the word... GRITTY. Yeah. No grits man. 😢
