In this video I talk about years of trying to figure out the tone to EVH's not enough guitar solo. I have read and dug as deep as I can....and it is a mystery to me. If you have any ideas at all....let me know.

its funny that its honestly just us that care about the tone. The audience has no clue. I know tho that we play better if we love the tone and such . Pete Thorn seems to have figured out EVH tone tho. I still Rock the original Atomic Amplifire 3 button, if its good enough for Satchal Its good enough for me. To bad they are non existent as a company service wise.

I think I got it figured out....just haven't had a chance to do a video yet. I do not know if this is how EVH did it but I think I am close. Hopefully will get that video out in a couple of weeks. I will also check out Petes channel and see what he has. Thanks my friend.

Brother you have to watch the video of VH playing “Not Enough” live on The David Letterman Show. Great performance and Eddie nails the solo!

That is actually the video that got me started on all this. I at first thought it was just some studio magic that made this tone....then I saw him do it on Letterman and it blew my mind. The tone was EXACTLY the same as on the record. I have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure this out. I think I am getting close but still not right.

Edward used his old Marshall for a lot of the tracks on Balance. To my ears thats it. A JMP Super Lead, non master volume full up. No modern Marshall sounds like it. You must learn about output tube gain. NO pedals. No modeler no digital amp will ever get that sound. I have a pair of Germino Lead 55 Lv which is a replica of what Edward used.

You think? I watched a video some time back and they said that he used a Soldano amp for this album.

I'm definitely not an expert, but that to me sounds like a chorus, or a flanger, or a mix of both. That's definitely up Leon Todd's alley. He recently made a video about how to thicken your tone, there might be some clues on how to get the tone
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
I know there is a rotary and I do believe with a chorus and maybe a pitch shift with some slight delay.

I'm pretty much whatever the opposite of an expert is but here's my thoughts... I don't think you're going to get that tone at the speakers or at the line out of your effects processor but at the end of the mix buss on your console. I'd try splitting the guitar into a dry cab and into a Leslie / effected cab (or the virtual / digital equivalent). On the mix console push the dry channel fader up high and nudge the Leslie effect channel fader up just enough to be barely noticeable. This might solve the "wah wah wah" problem. Of course all the usual recording magic plays a part too (compression, delay, EQ, reverb, etc.) The other obvious thing to talk about is "Eddy's hands" but what also deserves credit are his ears. He's one of the greats for a reason. Good luck on the chase!
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
Yeah I thought it was all studio processing until I saw the Letterman show. His tone was literally identical to the record so it is going to be able to be copied. Now granted I am trying to do it with a fractal because lord knows how much equipment Ed used to get this tone. I know there is a rotary, a chorus and maybe a pitch shift with a slight delay. Not sure of the signal chain however. And yes, Ed 's ability to hear this stuff is amazing. But, this is why he is Ed and I am not. Thanks my friend.

On the axe fx I would start with using chorus dimension , there is 1-4 for the dimension, use it with the Lesli and work with the speeds of both to see if you can come close and use the neck pickup with the volume backed off or turn down the gain. I have not tried this , but when you mention speed this was were my thoughts went.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
That is the route I am trying now. But I have not tried the dimension yet. However, I am getting this grind from the distortion that I am trying to figure out. I am thinking maybe it is a signal chain issue now. I can kind of get close but it does not have that "lush" sound that his has. Thanks for the tip. I think that may get me closer.

Being a keyboard player and having owned and played plastic portable organs and Hammonds since the early 1970's through leslies it sounds to me like he had the top treble horn disabled and is playing with the bottom rotor engaged.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
That's interesting. I never even thought about that. Of course I am trying to replicate this through my Fractal. Might try to pull a para EQ into the mix.

Stereo spead maybe, try small delay 5-14ms 100 wet on one of the channels.

I've tried that. I tried a stereo enhancer as well.

This solo was his normal rig with a leslie cab added in the studio. Live he had a unit that produced that sound. His typical balance rig which was the w/d/w with micropitch, delay on each side and then the leslie added.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
I know it was his rig and I thought a but of studio magic until I saw the letterman show and his tone is exactly the same. I am sure there is a rotary with a chorus and or pitch shift with a slight delay. Not sure of the signal chain. When I put them all together there is a bit of a grind to the tone so that is why I am thinking my signal chain is off somewhere. Thanks brother.

@@TraceTaylor3 i know in 95 he added a unit for the balance tour for that song. I have never been able to zoom in close enough to the rack or found the exact unit. I rebuilt his rack from the 90's Bradshaw system and all. 1984 to balance are my favorite tones.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
@@jima5150 Yeah dude. that tone is crazy good. It lost that sizzle that he had in the early albums that I was not that crazy about. Yeah, this tone has me completely stumped....but you thinking it is in the rack does help. I was leaning towards a leslie speaker but starting to change my mind about that as I cannot get the wobble out of that tone. thanks brother.

Stereo rig with a tape delay feeding the right channel. Sounds like there is both a slight delay and decay on the right channel. Just enough to add a lag and separation. Just a wild guess. This has always been one of my favorite EVH solos. As someone that is not a HUGE Van Halen fan. yeah I have always dug this solo. I like them just fine, just not as much as many out there. Total respect to EVH though.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 месяца назад
Yeah i get that. I am more of an Eddie fan than Van Halen fan. Eddie was simply a genius on a guitar. I haven't use tape delay but I have use two single delays, dual delays, stereo delays....and the sad thing is I am probably overlooking the simple part that makes this sound.
@alsmith7316
@alsmith7316 4 месяца назад
@@TraceTaylor3 Yeah, to my untrained non-professional ears, it sounds like a delay on the right channel with the mix or blend turned to full wet. Just a small delay with a single repeat. There may be some other way to get that same effect, but that is what I hear through my headphones when I listen to that solo. Again, I am far from a sound master or sound engineer.

@@alsmith7316 Yeah I will listen to it again with headphones. This one has had me stumped for some time. I know there is a rotary, just not sure how he is getting it.

@@TraceTaylor3 Very good chance I am wrong, but when I "first" hear a note, I hear it through the left channel, then I hear it repeat the right side. When I heard a note die out, it seems to die out on the right side. I picked this up focusing on the first pick attack on one section of the solo, and then the final note as it fades out. Things seem to start left and end right. Not sure I hear a rotary Good luck on your quest.
