without a dryer the one-sheet system does not work but I too like the limit-system with categories limited to certain bins or drawers, or the just-one rule in the bathroom
I hang dry (don't have a dryer...by choice...) and we literally only use one set of sheets. It works fine, even in winter. HOWEVER, this means our bed sits for a couple hours or all day, depending on weather, unmade. I can definitely see why this would not be everyone's cup of tea. We are most definitely NOT minimalist, just trying to be frugal. Ideally, I'd have at least 4 sets of sheets to rotate through because I like variety. Oh well.
@@katie7748This works for me too, no dryer but only one pair of sheets, i hang it out on the attic and in the evening it’s dry enough. Do it for years now also for my duvet cover.
I have 2 sets of sheets for each bed. But I do like you and just wash, dry and put back on the bed each week. That second set is for when my cats have accidents on the bed, which has happened to me in the middle of the night. The ones I have are 100% cotton Wholistic from Costco a few years ago and I love them. They have a subtle print, no solids available. I've not seen them offered since I bought them. I'd be very tempted to buy a 3rd set just to hopefully get the same quality of material and fit. As someone below mentioned, quality of clothes and household linens has most definitely been worsening for years.
I found the only set of white 💯 cotton sheets in the store! Which was crazy to me! Everything else was microfiber which I don’t really like and find uncomfortable to sleep on personally. Thanks for sharing 💕💕
I would hate having only one set of sheets. I love my crisp and cool pima cotton sheets in summer and my warm and cosy cotton flannel sheets in winter. Bedding is one area that I am extremely fussy about. I agree completely with the less is more approach of makeup and skincare. I have decluttered a lot and am working through what is left with the intention of dramatically streamlining what I replace it with.
My Dad is the same way about his sheets! 😃 he loves flannel in the winter but I would have a hot flash if I slept in flannel haha thanks so much for sharing your point of view!! Love it 💕💕
Same. IMO it matters what climate you live in. I live in a 4 season climate and, out of choice, don't heat my bedroom. Flannels are a must. As are cotton blankets for spring and fall and a nice duvet for winter.
I’m literally eating soup waiting for my sons sheets to be done in the dryer lol Also you’ll notice as you replace the sheets/towel/tshirt.. the material is worsening Desperately trying to find linen curtains to replace the ones thinned and faded from 30 years of sun without much luck
hahaha amazing timing! Yes! I get that I do my best to always look for 100% cotton but there was only one set of sheets that said that the rest were all microfiber...
If it’s in the budget linen cotton drapes with COTTON sun block from pottery barn are high quality and I washed them several times over 10 years I have them . Look fantastic still
I love my old Threshold cotton sheets from Target. I recently bought a new set, they smelled weird and the material was so rough, I had to return them!
@@Marsolan ah thx for the tip. I’ll take a look online… (I’m Canadian but we may have a few locations) And going into the store is so much better to feel the quality. It also helps me not buy… because once I feel that it’s cheap -I don’t spend ! Win-win.
I keep one extra set for each mattress size in our house... just in case of sickness/accidents... or if it rains before my laundry dries 😝 But really, the container concept does help especially with scarcity mindset. I have found this to be so true and helpful for me... as we continue to move/downsize/declutter this is a great help for me!
You post very helpful videos and I am grateful. I always think about the suggestions you make and they seem very sensitive to the ADHD community. I am not ADHD but my sister is and you have helped both of us tremendously. Just wanted you to know that you are appreciated.
Thank you so much!!! I was only diagnosed a few months ago but it has been a struggle all my life! Minimalism saved me from my own craziness before I even know what was different about my brain 👏💕💕 thanks so much for sharing!
I have a lot of areas in my life that is minimal. Bed linen is NOT one of them… I live in a small apartment building with 1 washer & drier and 12 units. The thing is either constantly being used or is broken 🤣 so I always need to have 2 clean sets and 1 on the bed. Then I know I’m covered for a few weeks. I use them all on rotation. I get through them all in a month or just slightly over. Cannot wait for the day I have my own washer/dryer again!
I dont agree with having only one set of sheets. I can't wash and dry in one day and like some variety. However, I do have items, namely pieces of tupperware and a bread knife, that are around 50 years old and still in everyday use.
@@minimalease 🙂 it’s literally what it sounds like, you cut the sheet in half down the middle and sew the 2 sides together so the worn fabric ends up at the sides and there’s a seam down the middle 😀 Hem the sides, I guess. Never done it myself but Mum (now 94) and her mum always did
Really good idea. Looks like I have some systems but could definitely implement more. I just didn’t realize that until your video. One system that definitely work for me is that I like to keep my clothes number under 30. Seems to be a sweet number for me to be able to manage and care for them. In addition, there’s a small number of loungewear, sleepwear, outwear items, but there’s no problem there and I do not worry about counting that. Also I’m in Southern California seasonal closing is not a thing.
Settling into minimalism has allowed me to finally figure out what I like and only buy those things as I need them. I have curly hair and like all other curly girls you spend forever trying to find the “holy grail” finally realizing that there are no miracle products, no clothing items, accessories etc that are going to finally make me complete has been a game changer. I am so basic and simple now and it’s been such a breath of fresh air.
This is exactly the motivation and help I need right now! I can't wait for the video, so that I can work on new systems 🙏🥰 ... I especially struggle with too much clothes. They all fit me, but I always have to move stuff, to get to a specific item 🙈 In general, people's expectations about me wanting to buy new things, is a struggle as well, because I'm really trying to "have enough" 😅 I practically had nothing on my wishlist for my birthday, other than money and experiences/adventures. It doesn't sit well with people 😆
I trick my brain with the question If money and space wasn't the issue, how many sheets or plates would I have? what items would i have? Would i replace or add something? And if I answer to myself with all honesty, most of the time I'm content with what I already have and i don't want to add more or replace things in the particular category. This feeling of enough is so freeing!
♥ I'm a minimalist in most areas but bedding isn't one of them. On the upside, I've decluttered over half of what I had and I won't be buying more unless something gets ruined.
I've also experienced the foot through the hole in the sheet. :-) And yes, if we realize that we aren't going to be the center of attention whether at a funeral or a wedding, etc., then we can relax and just be the best version of ourselves.
I stopped using top sheets twenty years ago. Making the beds is so much simpler without them. We use a down comforter with a linen cover which I only have to wash maybe once a month. I wash the bottom sheet every other week because it gets dirty faster and yes…I only have one! My daughter’s cat just tore three holes in it so I’m going to patch them up. P.S. In the summer, I take the duvet out and use only the cover!
LL Bean has 100% cotton percale sheets. They are crisp and cool and I love them. I can’t stand synthetic fiber sheets as I always feel too hot when sleeping with them.
This was such a grounding video for me Becky. I feel like I’m 80% through my minimising journey, which has been such a long haul these past couple of years. But this video has given me the gentle nudge I need to revisit some categories of items that I thought I’d finished minimising - but now realise I’d be happier with if I minimised them that bit more! Thank you so much 🙏❤️
Im 90% decluttered, even just decluttered some more toddler toys and our polyester blankets. My issue is the wanting the items i want too much to not be content with what i have though i know were furtanate to have it all. Like i want a smaller sectional ours i huge for small livingrooms or i want a new bed blanket and mattress since we got a new bedframe. However we move in a year so i keep reminding myself to wait and sell the stuff when we go and get things ill like more next time and to be patient and happy and stop comparing but its hard lol ❤
It’s so hard! I’m 💯 not perfect at this but you definitely have a great mindset! I’ve slowly replaced over the last 5 years things I bought years ago because they were cheap but never fit my style or cleaning routine. I wish I had thought like you back then and I would have saved myself so much money and time! Thanks for sharing 💕
I love your videos, thank you for making them❤ I love that you encourage frugality and I love how you've cultivated your home, it is beautiful and peaceful❤ I have more work to do on my minimalism journey. My downfall is home decor and I am weaning off of that desire. It was mainly because of what other people were doing online. The spending on that was not good for my household and I end up donating decor all the time because I get sick of it. I appreciate you and your guidance towards loving simply❤
Aww thank you! I always say the first step is knowing and recognizing what your problem is 💕 I had the same problem with decor for many years and it was really hard to overcome! I think it really helped me when I got off all social media for 6 months
I accidentally ended up doing exactly what you recommend. I put almost everything I own in storage back in February to take care of my dad for a while and unfortunately, he passed away and I inherited the house. I’ve been spending months, organizing decluttering and setting the house up the way I would like repainting, etc., while my stuff stays in storage. Everything is taking so much longer than expected. Meanwhile, I’m living in the home, making it functional and really learning about myself what I value how much I like having things uncluttered and my ideal organization methods so it’s gonna be interesting when I finally do bring my stuff back. One thing I’ve learned is you can’t buy your way to organization later in life. My mom paid people to organize for her and those organizational systems have been the biggest headache. I especially hate all the stuff hanging over doors, etc.. unless someone’s gonna watch how you actually live, they can’t do a system for you. The worst is that I’ve rehomed so many organizational systems and then when I got the bathroom toiletries and meds the way I wanted them because of the shallowness of the closets and cabinets I actually ended up still spending $20 to get the right containers to simplify and make everything accessible, My biggest trick has been not fighting my own impulses if I find I’m dropping laundry or garbage someplace then that’s where the laundry basket goes and that’s where our garbage can go is no matter how many I have. Everything is flowing so well I love it so much and I’m not going to let my things mess it up. I’ll have one big closet and the garage as staging and nothing makes it into living area unless it’s the best thing and if something else has been doing that job it goes out. I figure they’ll be two more charity pick ups etc.
Wow you must be really struggling for content . Trying something new and interesting when something runs out or wears out is just as important and fun and what life is all about , exploring and finding things that could improve your life .
I find enjoyment in travel and having time with my family and friends.. I don't spend a lot of wasted energy on repeating patterns that don't suit my lifestyle... (side note from a veteran teacher: if you don't have anything helpful or kind to say your welcome to keep moving)
