The One Neck Stretch No One is Doing for Forward Head Posture & Neck Pain - Dr Mandell

Forward head posture causes the deep neck flexors to become shortened and contracted in the front of the neck causing other surrounding muscles to become over-worked and spasm. This is one of my favorite and least known stretch in the medical community. I believe this stretch will help take you to the next level of recovery and healing. Good Luck and Fast Healing! Dr M

Thank goodness for you!! I suffered with the inability to turn my head for decades; I may have relief for a few days but mostly it was pain and inability to move my head. I also dislocated my pelvis and lived with it for 15 years...cramped and locked glute muscle with painful scar tissue; add to that tennis elbow that grew into a completely frozen shoulder. Your video...this one was the start of my recovery and I could never thank you enough. It has been so hard to get thru these things but with your information and MOTIVATION I now feel like I can live for the first time in 35 years. I have learned alot from you as well as some other talented therapists on RU-vid. If my feedback on what I have learned can help I would be more than happy to share. You are a hero Dr. Mandell...my own personal hero. Thank you with all my heart. You didn't just help me make it a great day...you did so much more. Much love to you and yours in your practice...never a day goes by that I don't think of you.

Thanks Dr. Alan Mandell. For 5 days going on 6 I have had blurred vision, dizziness, and tingling down my left arm from only what I assume is sleeping in a bad position in a hotel bed. It is freaking me out the blurred vision but watching your videos and doing your neck stretches are helping me to feel slightly better and help to alleviate some of these symptoms. Not only are you helping me to understand that neck issues can be causing these symptoms, you are giving answers to help alleviate. Thank you for producing these videos and fingers crossed I get some relief!!

Great stretch - I can already feel increased blood flow/nerve impulses in those muscles after doing it a few times. And I feel like my neck is really supporting my head more, as it's supposed to.

Dr. Mandell You hit another miracle. When I was 18, I had a motor scooter accident. The back wheel of my scooter flipped out from under me going 50MPH. I scraped all of my back and broke my clavicle bone in three places. What you just showed me instantly removed the pain I have every day until I pull back the shoulder ... Crack and pain is gone. But, this procedure did that more easily than trying to pull my shoulder apart. Yet another miracle by Dr. Mandell. ... Pain all gone WOW thank you Dr. Mandell! PS: I have been watching your videos and this one is the closest to that particular pain. I am always clicking on your videos, and will always give you thumbs UP! So there you have it ... "YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY."

Thank you so much for this video. For years I've suffered crippling headaches, muscle pain and cramps etc due to poor posture. Even after going to a chiropractor I haven't felt as good as I do after doing these stretches. I heard a crack in my spine when turning my head and all of a sudden I feel so much lighter. It's amazing! My neck sits back in it's normal position again and I can finally stand up straight without having to force it. Thank you!

I dove into a racquetball wall 25 years ago, and my shoulder seized up for 6 months. Up to about 7 years ago I would have a sharp pain when I did this stretch in this video. It was like a thin cord was barely holding on around my collar bone in this location in the video. But magically about 7 years ago when I did this stretch I no longer had this sharp painful sensation anymore. It disappeared all by itself. I can play racquetball way more effectively now because of that, so much so at the age of 46 I was 9th in Canada in 2013.

Wow, thanks! I have terribly tight muscles all thru my shoulders and neck, I've just recently started doing stretches to help. I'm a stomach sleeper and that aggravates everything. (Going to try your pillow trick, I need to sleep in a different way!) Two days ago I woke up with extreme pain around my right occipital muscle. I've done tons of stretches yesterday and today to stretch out. I didn't realize how much the SCM muscles were contributing to the problem! All your exercises have helped, but this unusual clavicle pressure next stretch REALLY help relieved a lot of pain in the occipital! I had NO idea the pain and tightness I was actually having at the SCM trigger point on my jawline right below the ear area. WOW. Super helpful. Will recommend to all my friends. Thanks again.

I have mild desiccation in the neck and herniated discs in the lower back. 4 years ago i could hardly walk at the nerve pain in my leg was so bad. With easy yoga stretches it improved...but now the pain is in my shoulder and running down my arm and I hand falls asleep in the middle of the night. Thank you for these videos. I will take the advice. I am scared about the progression as I get older. I am in my mid 50s and my Dad has a horrible back...so it runs in the family.

.Description and picture shows that longus coli and captitus are being stretched when in fact they are long and tight due to forward head posture. strengthening the true and deep flexors while stretching the posterior cervicals is in order. I do not negate that this is a significant stretch, as I use it, but I do challenge that it is the longus muscles that are being stretched. a chin tuck, or retraction of the head, as if to flatten the cervical curve, actually strengthens the Longus muscles and stretches the short and tight posterior cervical muscles which contribute to forward head posture. This stretch serves to do a fascial release on sternocleidomastoid, infra hyoids and anterior scalene, which are short and tight with said posture, not longus coli and longus capitus which are long and tight in a forward head posture. Still good. still needed as other muscles involved are being stretched. The following by Dr. Mandell should be used in conjunction with the stretch in this video to actually strengthen the deep flexors and stretch the posterior cervicals. . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-um6opADsVJk.html

This stretch immediately relieved the spasm in a back of my neck (around C7) that I have been suffering for 6 month, unable to get rid of it even by daily physiotherapy exercises that I've been doing for past 3 month. Thank you a lot Dr.Mandell. Indeed you are the only one who recommended to stretch the front flexors instead of rear once that seem to be already overstretched (straight neck syndrome). I got FAITH in you and Bob and Brad, cuz ya healed my neck shoulder bursitis and severe sciatica. I'm a back-sleeper, and I recently healed my severe sciatica in less than a week, by simply putting a pillow under my knees when sleeping. It was so bad, when I'd get up in the morning, it felt like I was being poked in the R hip with a burning knife. Even if you're not a back sleeper, the pillow under knees is very comfortable, and Imo, if you can at least begin sleeping like this, it will help alleviate and realign your lower spine and possibly cure you. PS: Got this from MotDoc. If you suffer from (I-phone..laptop head-forward, shoulder and neck pain), I cured that again as a back-sleeper, by rolling up a medium towel with a pillow case held together with rubber bands, sleeping with it under my neck. That took a little longer, 2-3 weeks, but I'm cured. :)

Hi Doc, & thank you for being here. I'm 66 and have had neck issues for over a decade. It it now to the breaking point for me. Been doing data processing on a computer for almost 30 years. Also a drummer vocalist. When I woke up the next morning from my last gig, I suffered from equilibrium issues, headache, nausea, increase pain & chronic pulsitile tinnitus. Diagnosed with Alkaloid Spondilitus. Have osteoarthritis throughout my body. There is chronic pain in my left shoulder/neck etc. Sometimes I just feel like giving up on living. Doctors only suggest steroid shots or surgery or never address the issue but just the symptoms. I will give these exercises a try to see if I can get a little relief. I also just ordered the "Posture Pump" to see if that will help some of my issues. Sorry for the long winded post... Thanks Steve T.

I couldn't see what you meant by underbite.Can you explain?
@onshisan
@onshisan 7 лет назад
Thrust your chin and jaw forward, creating an "underbite" (an overbite is when your upper front teeth reach beyond the lower front teeth, whereas an underbite is the opposite). This lengthens the muscles that you are stretching even more than the basic stretch. Take care not to over-do it!
