Update from John Bytheway: After I recorded this episode, I gave a talk where I shared the story about John that I share in this episode. John was there and he later wrote me and shared some additional insights you might be interested in...
He said, "When I wrote my first book in 1994, my routine was wake up at 5 am, reward myself with a glass of Tropicana Pure Premium OJ (NOT from concentrate), shower and scripture study, drive up to my BYU office at the Harman Building, then write on my laptop from 6-8. Then I began my full-time job 8-5. (Interestingly, I defined my life by those two hours, from 6 am to 8 am -- not by the other eight -- when people asked me, "what are you doing these days?" My answer was "I'm writing a book!" even though that was only two hours of my day, it defined my life because it was my goal and I was excited about it).
Thank you for your amazing example John!! :)

Brother Hilton thought you might be interested in this: Stronger and Closer Connection to God Through Multiple Covenants DALE G. RENLUND Baptism is the first covenant that everyone makes on the covenant path. The baptismal covenant is a public witness to Heavenly Father of three specific commitments: to serve God, to keep His commandments, and to be willing to take on the name of Jesus Christ. The other facets that are frequently associated with the baptismal covenant-that we “bear one another’s burdens,” “mourn with those that mourn,” and “comfort those that [are] in need of comfort”- ARE FRUITS OF MAKING THE COVENANT RATHER THAN PART OF THE ACTUAL COVENANT. These facets are important because they are what a converted soul would naturally do.

I believe that progression from kingdom to kingdom will be possible, as did J Reuben Clark, Brigham Young, Hyrum Smith, Joseph F. Smith, and James E. Talmage. This doesn’t mean that all will choose it. But I think I’m the billions of years of eternity, that option will be provided for anyone who is willing to live the laws and progress.
@Jessica49376
@Jessica49376 Месяц назад
I believe that too, do you have sites or works you can add to support this
@PainH8er
@PainH8er Месяц назад
@@Jessica49376 Absolutely. Although Bruce R. McConkie called it a “deadly heresy” to believe that one could progress from kingdom to kingdom, the First presidency announced that we don’t have a definitive position on this issue, and several apostles (Brigham Young, J. Reuben Clark, and James E. Talmage) disagreed with him and believed that it WAS possible to progress from kingdom to kingdom: “The brethren direct me to say that the Church has never announced a definite doctrine upon this point. Some of the brethren have held the view that it was possible in the course of progression to advance from one glory to another, invoking the principle of eternal progression; others of the brethren have taken the opposite view. But as stated, the Church has never announced a definite doctrine on this point.” (Statement from the Secretary to the First Presidency, Joseph L Anderson, in 1952 and again in 1965) “It is reasonable to believe, in the absence of direct revelation...that, in accordance with God’s plan of eternal progression, advancement from grade to grade within any kingdom, and from kingdom to kingdom, will be provided for. But if the recipients of a lower glory be enabled to advance, surely the intelligences of higher rank will not be stopped in their progress; and thus we may conclude, that degrees and grades will ever characterize the kingdoms of our God.” (James E. Talmage, The Articles of Faith 1899 edition pp. 420-421) “None would inherit this earth when it became celestial and translated into the presence of God but those who would be crowned as Gods - all others would have to inherit another kingdom - they would eventually have the privilege of proving themselves worthy and advancing to a celestial kingdom but it would be a slow process.” (Brigham Young, as quoted in Wilford Woodruff’s journal; August 5th, 1855) “I am not a strict constructionalist, believing that we seal our eternal progress by what we do here. It is my belief that God will save all of His children that he can: and while, if we live unrighteously here, we shall not go to the other side in the same status, so to speak, as those who lived righteously; nevertheless, the unrighteous will have their chance, and in the eons of the eternities that are to follow, they, too, may climb to the destinies to which they who are righteous and serve God, have climbed to those eternities that are to come.” (J. Reuben Clark, Church News, 23 April 1960, p. 3) “Those of the Terrestrial Glory either advance to the Celestial or recede to the Telestial., or else the moon could not be a type: it waxes and wanes.” (Hyrum Smith, from a sermon transcribed by Franklin D. Richards in Words of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 24, 1 August 1843) President Joseph F. Smith taught that progression from kingdom to kingdom “may be possible for especially gifted and faithful characters” (Improvement Era 14:87, November 1910) Some years ago I was in Washington, D.C., with President Harold B. Lee. Early one morning he called me to come into his hotel room. He was sitting in his robe reading Gospel Doctrine, by President Joseph F. Smith, and he said, “Listen to this!” “Jesus had not finished his work when his body was slain, neither did he finish it after his resurrection from the dead; although he had accomplished the purpose for which he then came to the earth, he had not fulfilled all his work. And when will he? Not until he has redeemed and saved every son and daughter of our father Adam that have been or ever will be born upon this earth to the end of time, except the sons of perdition. That is his mission. We will not finish our work until we have saved ourselves, and then not until we shall have saved all depending upon us; for we are to become saviors upon Mount Zion, as well as Christ. We are called to this mission.” “There is never a time,” the Prophet Joseph Smith taught, “when the spirit is too old to approach God. All are within the reach of pardoning mercy, who have not committed the unpardonable sin.” (Boyd K Packer)

When Pres. Oaks says "mortal" I wonder if he meant this life and the next? because if he just meant this life then 99.9% of mankind won't gain any exaltation as they never heard the true Gospel, as God placed them in times and places he knew they wouldn't have any chance to accept it and temple work wouldn't be of any value. I wonder if it's this life and the next?

Regarding universal eternal life, I have a question. I am a convert striving for eternal life and to be in the celestial kingdom. I have hope to be resurrected in the morning of the first resurrection. I just did some temple work for my father. The temple work would allow him to be in the celestial kingdom IF he is worthy AND he chooses to accept the ordinances. Otherwise, my father would be either the terrestrial or telestial kingdom. I didn’t get the impression he accepted the work But I did have the impression that I would see my father again in the resurrection. So assuming if I am worthy for the celestial kingdom and my father is not, will I have to wait till the afternoon of the resurrection to see him? Perhaps my impression was that I would see my father again in the spiritual world before the resurrection. Any comments?

John - I was surprised that you characterized the danger of Nehor's teachings as being that all people would inherit eternal life. It seems to me the danger of his teaching is really found in the way it is characterized in Alma 15:15 which is that he thought eternal life is something everyone would automatically inherit without repentance, and without regard to what type of person we allow ourselves to become. It seems to me that it IS God's will that all of his children inherit eternal life, and that expressing the hope of that like nephi does in second nephi 33:12 is consistent with God's will. In other words, 1st Timothy 2:4 is spot on. It is correct to teach that God wants all of his children to inherit eternal life, and that is the purpose of jesus's ministry and atonement as explained in John 3:16-17. The problem with nehor is not that he expressed that truth, but that he characterized it as something people will automatically inherit without repentance, as if God can force a gift upon us that we do not want, or as if wickedness really CAN be happiness. My point is just that I don't think the danger of Nehor is "all people will be saved" because I think that is actually what God wants. Instead, the danger of nehor is "Repentance isn't real and doesn't matter"

I think it is important to understand that Alma used the word "soul" incorrectly throughout the book of Alma. The soul is the body and the spirit together (D&C 88:15). We also hear this in the temple when God breaths the breath of life into Adam and he becomes a "living soul." I think Mormon wanted to share Alma's words just as they were written, and that is why we see this incorrect doctrine only in Alma.
@johnhiltoniii
@johnhiltoniii Месяц назад
That's an interesting perspective, thank you for sharing it! I wonder if Alma was aware of the principles we know through D&C 88 in his day.

@melissasmuse
@melissasmuse Месяц назад
@@johnhiltoniii it’s actually the opposite. The comfort may come by not having to think critically. But I guess that’s called ignorance, which people say is bliss. So I guess you’re right there’s comfort in someone telling you what to think about how everything should be done. Did you know the LDS church gave $250 million dollars to the boy scouts of America to cover up sexual abuse allegations. Very interesting… but hey we can blatantly have our leaders sexually abuse kids but if you don’t pay your tithing you can’t workshop GOD in our “special temple”. Actually I don’t need a temple to worship GOD, I am the TEMPLE. Give me a break it brings peace and comfort, yeah for those who can’t think! lol it’s laughable actually.
