The ONE Thing Holding Us Back from a Tesla Model Y 

FSD transferability needs to be a thing.. it's been delayed so long now that they owe it to the people that bought into it years ago.

The one flaw I think that Model Y has is there's no barrier under the front seats to prevent anything dropped or stored under them from sliding or rolling into the front footwells. This could prove to be extremely hazardous if something slid or rolled into the driver's footwell, particularly in event of an emergency. Minor issue but with potentially grave consequences and one that's easily remedied by Tesla. Kids & adults alike sitting in the back seats drop stuff from time to time.

Totally agree. FSD transfer-ability will hold return customer back. Bear in mind, return customers are even more important than the new ones!

We've only test driven the Model 3, and it was amazing and we have our hearts set on one. After watching this video though, we may have to rethink that and give the Model Y a chance. This is a pretty good descriptor on the characteristics because you tie it into everyday living. Plus, I've never heard of the Serenbe Community and now I want to live there!

I don't think you need the Model Y when you actually have the perfect combination of model 3 for daily use and the super space and comfort in the model X when weekends and road trips!!

SO happy you guys did a road trip. I originally got hooked on your channel because of all the EV trips and family stuff you did in your original X. That is also what convinced us to buy our X.

We love the spacious room in our Model Y. Plenty of cargo space for groceries, strollers, stuff from Lowe’s, etc.

We have a Model X and an Audi A4 with 3 kids. We took the 7 seat Model Y for an overnight test drive to decide if we wanted to go that route for replacing the Audi. My wife ended up deciding against it. She felt it was too cramped compared to the Model X six seater. She also really hated the door handles on the Y, but since y'all have a 3, I imagine that's a non-issue. We ended up buying a used Model X instead since we really don't like the yoke steering and lack of a gear selector in the refreshed version. I've seen a ton of positive videos on the 7 seat Y, but I have to say, my kids hated it (ages: 4, 2.5, 8 months). We tried three across in the second row and also tried one in the back and they liked 3 across better. If I was buying a Y, I'd get the 7 seater, but I would only plan on using it when hauling more than our immediate family.

Always enjoy your content! Thanks for bringing us on your road trip. We recently just received delivery of our 7 seater MY and we have 3 little ones as well. My wife finds it family-friendly and our oldest (9) has no issue getting in and out of the 3rd row. It is a snug fit for sure but sufficient and that is with 3 car seat/boosters all-around.

This is why I want the Rivian RS1. It's a bigger EV. The Y was my baby until I saw how small the 7 seater was. The RS1 is a family hauler replacement!

We got the 2021 Model Y long range 7 seater. It’s beyond perfect.

Ooh that's a big gap under the seats (raised up on the risers). I can imagine bottles, balls, toys, general stuff rolling from back seat to front and going straight under the brake pedal! Kinda need a 'blocker' panel across that gap to stop things rolling from back to front and under the driver's feet.

I passed on the Model 3 when I learned it had a sedan trunk. But once the Model Y came out, I jumped on it pretty quickly. It fills all my driving wants and needs such as large cargo room, hatchback utility, relatively high seating position, ease of entry/exit, and I love being able to beat almost any other car that tries to race me at a light. I've done some road trips in it, and Tesla makes that fairly easy as well thanks to the Superchargers and Autopilot. And while at a Supercharger, you can watch RU-vid, Netflix, Twitch, Hulu, or play a game to pass the time. Almost every single time a video I watched took longer than the charging session.

7 seater upgrade is pricy at 4k. May as well take another csr for those rare times you really use it. Unless you use it most days of the week.

To be fair, a lot of vehicles have those buttons that automatically drop the rear seats down. And those performance wheels won't look so pretty when they get curb rash, or flats because the tires don't have enough beef on the sidewalls. And you do get credit for your FSD if you trade a Tesla in that has it, Elon said so. You just don't get full value for it, which also means Elon was wrong when he said FSD would make our Tesla's appreciate.

If the 7-seat Model Y can also fold the seats that flat with a click of a button and Tesla transfers FSD over to Y without charge, I think we have a deal here. I am also getting a Y in a few months, actually the Berlin one with structural battery pack and 4680er cells. Can't wait! Also love the room in the back and this is one of the main reasons I get a Y, not a 3. Who else on the market can fold the rear seats that easily, I think non?

Im actually was about to get a Model Y with that same color until I seen the new Model S that's coming out so I'm waiting for that. The 3rd row of the Model Y to me is a waste of an extra $3000. That area is so tight and compact, I wouldn't expect for an adult or a child to sit there for a long period of time.

If space is a most then model y is the choice. If comfortable seats, range and handling is a most then model 3 is the choice. Not to say that model 3 has tons of storage space it is just short of model y space. Price difference its also something to consider.

Love it that the kids can see the difference between the Tesla and the Taycan!

The only thing missing for the model Y is the Bio Defense Mode and Air Suspensions along with 4680 cells 👍👍.

Just test drove a rare 7 seater MY and yes it is totally underrated. Overall, this can be viewed as a baby Model X. The third row seats are way more usable than all the naysayers have been criticizing. Just remember that this is a smallish midsized SUV so keep your expectation within reasons. As far as the ride with the standard 19 in wheels, it is pretty good consider this is a Sports-UV that handles like a sports car. Noise level seems lower than my M3; perhaps due to the latest dual-pane front windows upgrades. I am more interested in the MY Performance which I will test next. Enjoy your Tesla. Cheers!

I had a m3 for two years and sold it for a mY last year and we just love it, but should have waited until now to get one because of all the refinements that they did since we got our’s ( heated steering wheel, new console, double pane windows in the front ) they just keep getting better!

I think the trade is a good move. All around it has more to offer with the extra space and comfort.

Nice coming across a gray ratsnake (Pantherophis spiloides). They're often referred to as "chicken snakes" because of their tendency to raid bird nests, but they're excellent to have around for rodent control. Nonvenomous and totally harmless. And thanks for such an in-depth review of the MY. I'm going to need to make a decision in a few months and things like this keep pushing me toward a MY!

FSD transferability would be one more thing to ensure repeat Tesla purchases.

I still love that silver color, no idea why they chose to get rid of that instead of the Midnight Silver Metallic. The silver's way better in my opinion!

If you trade in your Tesla to Tesla they could disable FSD in your current car and enable it in the new one so they aren’t losing out revenue. I hope they allow that sometime

You’re right about the FSD!! So many of us are believers in Tesla, and bought into the FSD before it was fully functional. It would be good to reward faithful early adopters and a small gesture of good will for Tesla to grant transferability to loyal owners of this piece of software. They should have those who didn’t buy into it subscribe at a higher rate.

What a pleasant video to showcase how "normal" an electric car can be. I have an early Model Y AWD (early 6200 VIN) and I love everything except the suspension. Did you find the Model Y to be bumpier than the Model 3 or X? Is the Model X ride much softer? I feel if they added air suspension to the Model Y to give it a more luxury ride I would be in absolute heaven.

I wouldn't mind a Model Y but I have a silver Model 3 (with a white interior) that I love 'cause it's somewhat rare so I'm reluctant to change ... my wife has Model X that I use a lot because it has the hitch and bike rack ... my ideal Y would be a silver performance with a white interior ... Tesla needs to offer a few more colours.

Since the 7 seat model Y has so much cargo space, sell the mX. You don’t need two spacious cars. Use the mY for family driving and model 3 for errands by you or hubby. FSD not transferable is a bummer and that’s why my first and second mS do not have it. Sadly, Tesla gives you no value for FSD on a trade-in but private sale may give you FSD $$$

I would wait for the 7 seat model Y. Your kids are going to get bigger, not smaller. And they will want their friends to come along for the ride.

If I owned an X and a 3 I would not trade. However I think the Y is a great car and value.

If you get the 7 seat Model Y, keep in mind, the back space is NOT going to be as big as the 5 seat Model Y. I sold my 3 and got the Y for the space and I know where you are coming from

I always love seeing people get excited about the cargo space that they don’t really use 😅. But you should probably just get the Y if that’s what you want even though there’s an X right there. Purchasing vehicles is more about desire than logic

Tesla (car) rich, but solar panel poor. I would suggest acquiring solar panels before upgrading to the Model Y. The Model Y is a fairly awesome sauce car (at least by today's standards), one worth acquiring, but one can't really be eco righteous, or really righteous at all, if you are a large scale consumer of hydrocarbon combustion based grid electricity.

Kim is right, wait for a 3rd row Y and FSD transfer option. I am also hoping we'll get the new federal tax credit when the Cyber truck starts rolling out.

I really enjoyed this episode! Yes, I think you should check out the 7-seat model first to see how much cargo room you lose with that option. I covet all the Model Y features you mention, but I'd want to know how much Tesla would give you for your trade-in (our Model 3s are the same age, etc.), and the balance difference for the Model Y. What makes me hesitate is that I don't "need" those features, so I would likely wait until all Teslas are powered by the new 4680 cells. What you find out in price might tempt me, however. DM me your details, when and if!

FSD pay-each-time just seems wrong... and monthly for what? Perhaps $200/month, 3 years is $7,200 - only a small benefit for those leasing. What will occur with the “$25k” car??

I have camped in my model Y. It wasn't bad at all. I camped at an RV place and charged my car with the NEMA 14-50 plug. But Tesla needs to get more chargers out in the wilds. Especially with the CyberTruck coming. Even if I had stayed in an hotel, I still would have needed to rent a RV solely for charging.

Still could've kept "like tesla." You can still talk about products that are like tesla. Not about how much you like tesla. Like, ya know?:)

I'm not sure you're correct that Tesla doesn't take FSD into account when offering a trade-in price. They won't let you carry over the FSD to a new vehicle, but Elon did say they would take FSD into account when giving a trade-in offer. Although sometimes something he says goes by the wayside.

I have a 2017 Model X. It is always better to have a bigger car since your kids will eventually grow up more and who would not appreciate more space. However, Tesla cars especially its X and Y don't have much tide-down assistance for the truck space, and are missing some hooks on the side of the trunk that I have found very useful in other SUVs. As far as the Tesla X and Y go, Their trucks are big if you fold down the 3rd row, but if you have some items in the truck, they tend to slide around as you drive. That is something that the designs of German cars excel more than Tesla. I own both German cars and Tesla. No car is perfect, but if Tesla design combines with the German design or vice verse, that will be a perfect marriage. Going back to X vs Y, the X has the unique "cool factor" which the Y lacks. The Gullwing doors and self-presenting doors. I choose the X over the Y any time of the day and night. Wink.

I'm in exactly the same position. I would have traded my 3 for a Y long ago if I could transfer FSD.

When you price it out, a Model Y long range is only $3K more than a Model 3 long range.

I would love it if FSD would stay with the buyer so you can transfer it to a new vehicle. Granted whoever buys your old model will have to pay the piper. I just don't see Tesla doing that.
