The OneXFly is Everything RIGHT and WRONG with Handhelds Today. 

Microsoft during the Windows 8 era had touch screen interfaces figured out, it was just too soon and poorly distributed (desktop and laptops with no touch screen and no start menu). Why can't they just take the lessons learned and apply it to pocket devices? They're a weird company.

There is no UI for screen rotation in ChimeraOS because we are using Steam Big Picture mode as our UI. Steam does not have rotation options and we cannot modify Steam. There are configuration options that can be done to manually rotate the screen. But generally the way this is handled is through device specific configuration that we have to add to the OS. This device is new so it has not yet been added. The story is similar for the menu buttons. Every hardware vendor is doing their own completely different thing and it is the wild wild west. Expecting a volunteer based project to have support for a pre-release device that we do not even have access to is asking a bit much IMO.

I've noticed that some games react really badly to the OS's default DPI scaling, and yet can't be bothered to declare themselves DPI-aware. They'll refuse to go into fullscreen, and claim the maximum screen resolution is something other than the actual resolution. The way to fix that is to find the executable, go to the Compatibility tab of Properties, and set the "DPI scaling performed by" override to *application*.

End of statement at 13:00, I agree. I cannot tell you how infuriating when that same thing happened with laptops a decade ago. Just... couldn't install a newer driver that fixed performance issues so you're just screwed because both AMD and Nvidia were too busy to be bothered. Definitely the main reason I'm so iffy on these handhelds right now. :/

Re AMD updates: I am running a MinisForum UM690, and Adrenalin updates just fine to the latest and greatest. So this issue is not a generic one, but specific to the implementation. I am happy that MinisForum decided to enable use of AMD factory drivers!

That's why valve formula with the whole software stack being developed is the sure choice for a great user experience!

What i think makes the steam deck so great, is Valve's dedication to fix and improve the software associated with it. Which will benefit the entire Linux community as i see it.

I'm in on the crowdfunding. Looks like the best handheld so far for portability without sacrificing too much by having a minuscule screen.. It's a portable ps3, or a windows running switch! Can't wait to have my own!

Playnite has a big picture mode, and I think you can install from playnite. Correct me if I am wrong. You can also set it up to boot directly I to playnite full-screen on startup. There is even a theme to make it look the the steamdeck interface.

great insight on the state of amd support for these devices! Makes me wary of considering these handheld devices! I do have to wonder though how was I not worrying about any of those in the laptop market among legacy brands, but I think the focus here is handhelds so I will stick to this I can't believe it still that amd support is separate from manufacturer support, but that does kind of makes sense as AMD has little to no control of the actual device using the power of the chips they provide, and well, with these rather unheard of brands like AOKZOE, OneXPlayer, AYA, their commitment to device support really has to be proven first

Regarding AMD laptop/emdedded APUs, I use a Lenovo Laptop with a Ryzen 3700U. The only errors I ever had were due to a Windows setting/feature, when I installed the AMD provided drivers. They are solved by changing the setting temporarily, and restarting the install. What exactly is the error you encounter?

RDR2 has the same problem on ultrawide displays on multimonitor setups and the solution is to modify a config file manually to set the resolution and then not to fiddle with anything at the resolution screen ingame 😊

Hello, Beta tester/reviewer here. Thankfully the new AMD driver: 23.9.1 and 23.9.2 can install directly onto the device. lets pray this is the path forward for the future 7840 drivers for the onexfly. great video!

My god, thank you for talking about the BS of the drivers. (Also I'm sure you know, but there are ways of force installing drivers, and it works just fine)

Newer AMD drivers can be forced installed in the device driver menu on these devices. Now whether or not everything will work properly afterwards is a crap shoot, but it will or should still be usable.

Is it the smallest 7840u handheld or the smallest handheld with a 7" screen, because the Air 1s is definitely smaller.

Is there no virtual mouse switch on this? That’s a lifesaver on GPD Systems. Also there’s a way to force the correct touchscreen keyboard to live in the taskbar to force that keyboard anytime you want. But I’m more curious about the virtual mouse…?

Maybe steam os like system is a better solution for these devices when it comes to APU drivers update, all should be integrated into kernel and mesa, right?

the driver thing is already an issue in laptops. and has been snce forever. sure you can get "drivers" from nvidia or amd. but for the -proper- driver you need to get them from the manufacturer brand, like HP or Dell. I have a laptop with an amd a4 and radeon hd 8600m discrete graphics, and AMD drivers -cannot- let me use the discrete graphics. windows only sees the integrates as both powersaving and performance device.

So I don’t have a Windows-based device to test this tho the Linux application Input Remapper should allow you to map any input detected by the OS to any other key or combination. And the keystrokes for the Steam and QAM buttons are “Ctrl + 1” and “Ctrl + 2” respectively. Found this out because Bazzite OS has that program natively installed

GPD Win Mini is out as well and is smaller clamshell unit with AMD Ryzen 7 7840U as an option... not sure how OneXPlayer can claim they are the smallest. But nice that they kept it thicker to have a good cooling system

Seem great but one key element to me is to be able to map keyboard/mouse game inputs to handheld.. and for this the dual trackpad + 4 extra buttons of the Steam Deck with Steam Input customization is an incredibly strong point of the steam deck. For example, i can config nested menus of left trackpad to run key commands and use the right pad for mouse. And back buttons for right click and emulated mouee wheel.. Without this many of the sim games that I like are unplayable.

I think Amd is doing to these APUS what NVDIA is doing to Gamer graphics cards. Only treating them as a side thought after they’ve figured out how to make the most money from something else.

Wow you are telling me that one of the biggest hurdles a linux-based OS for handhelds is actually having a decent handheld-focused UI? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you. In my experience, the only mobile-ish interface for a tablet is GNOME but then all applications are NOT designed with touch controls in mind anyway so whatever. And the keyboard has no arrow keys or symbols because screw you, GNOME devs decided the keyboard must suck, and the GNOME extensions to add that functionality to the keyboard break all the time as GNOME extensions often do when GNOME components are updated.

All good and fine that it is a great handheld but can it be self repaired? Steam Deck can be opened and Valve still covers Warranty. And now a days such proprietary handhelds should not be produced.

The driver problems are very similar to the issues with the driver issues found in Android. It is complete crap that LG phones have older/glitchier gpu drivers than a otherwise comparable Samsung phone.

I'm so glad I bought a steamdeck instead of one of these Windows based handhelds. The specs beat the steamdeck out of the water but the user experience with Windows is so bad.

These windows handhelds really just need to use playnite as their launcher. It would be so much of a better time and it should be the first install on any of these windows handhelds. Turn on the harmony theme and enjoy a game launcher the way it was meant to be!

The ChimeraOS wiki describes how to change screen rotation. That being said, a GUI would certainly be more intuitive.

I understand the argument about AMD providing driver support, but I feel it is unfortunately an issue of expectations. The reason I feel this comes down to a word that was said numerous times in this video: console. AMD makes hardware for XBOX and Playstation, plus the Steam Deck, and those consoles rely on their hardware manufacturers to provide the updates necessary to improve performance and game compatibility. Even ASUS, who makes a similar handheld that runs on Windows while having an actual gaming PC division that does see those same updates, requires you to get drivers exclusively from their website. I think the issue here is in the agreement made on the parts purchased. Despite them being similar or the same to what is in the laptops, if the purchase agreement was for console hardware I think that’s why AMD is hands off on the driver updates. It sucks when it requires to rely on a smaller company with fewer resources to get that done, but I would think that’s on the manufacturer for not establishing a means to do those updates in a timely manner.

How was battery life at the different wattages?

Why does everyone keep complaining about the steam deck not being pocketable enough? The OneXFly looks like is not going to fit in my pockets either. I wouldn't want to put any of these handhelds in my pocket anyway. I would end up breaking them.

The MD driver issue is annoying. But there is way for unofficial drivers to be installed. I believe back when adrenaline was in its teen versions somebody made a tool to generically signed for devices AMD drivers because they were just freaking garbage back then

Valve was all ready making a patch for starfield, why other handheld needed wait for AMD. Is why I think Valve holding the handheld market together. Other companies don't have there house in order even AMD. But I think over all other companies need to do Linux driver for there hardware so it's not all on the chimera os dev to do all the work getting it fix.

Not a gui way to do it, but xrandr should be abe to rotate the screen with "xrandr -o inverted"

valve really set the benchmark with the steam deck, there really hasn't been anything that better than the steamdeck though you are locked into steam still

I understand the argument, but don't fully agree. The OEM knows exactly what hardware they put in their handhelds, so they know precisely how to tweak it fully. Laptops can have the same hardware but perform differently, monitors can have the same panels but perform differently. Sure AMD could perhaps offer a generic do-it-all driver to consumers, which intel never did for their SOC tablet-chips, but noone would use it because of poorer perfomance. That seems like a lot of R&D with little ROI for AMD.

You know, the segment on AMD and driver support could kill products, companies, and games. It makes these handhelds an almost unacceptable risk due to the issues with games potentially not even working at all. One could argue that AMD’s decision could, in the next few years, ultimately kill the handheld market. This issue with AMD and drivers has been around since they were a separate company called ATI and it’s been nearly 20 years of the same nonsense. Until today I would have considered these valid mobile gaming platforms, but not I will instead revert to the previous recommendation of laptop with Nvidia GPU.

The one answer to the _Red Dead Redemption_ issue that I know of is, predictably, to use Linux. Of course, it would be possible to put ChimeraOS on here and fix the issues with screen rotation and built in buttons, but manual configuration of the rotation and the buttons may be a bit beyond most users' familiarity with Linux. It's likely that within a few months of this machine's actual release it will have sensible defaults pre-configured in ChimeraOS, so there is that.

why not stop using windows and switch to steamos? Fr I don't think I can ever do windows handheld because I know how good steamos is.

NGL I kinda lost interest halfway through but what the hell is AMD thinking? Expecting OEMs to work on the drivers reeks on Android's nonsense of depending on cell phone makers or telecom companies to provide updates for their devices.

As a Steam Deck and Ally user, despite the performance differences, the SteamOS experience is so much better for a handheld. As it currently stands, the general handheld Windows experience is just not nice at all. I don't see it improving any time soon as addressing handheld issues is not even remotely close to being of any importance to MS.

I remember when NVIDIA used to palm the driver updates off to laptop manufacturers and we used to have to hack the official drivers to get them working on laptops. Do better AMD

Honestly I would like to see bigger screams on such devices like the steam deck and rog ally do. However I do not need 1080p on those. I'd rather have better performence and an IPS display that looks pretty at a lower resolution. The screens are still so small that 800p would be enough in my opinion. further I'd like to see a more 4:3 or 16:10 like aspect.

“world’s” adjective is usually marketing speak for who really cares. lol. it may be nice tech but even if it was world’s second smallest, it doesn’t really affect anything other than on some intangible list that has nothing to do with bettering my life. just glad tech is improving overall.

This is why you take a chance on a bigger named brand like ASUS or Lenovo when it comes to these Windows handhelds because they have the resources to dedicate towards driver updates. With the higher price of these lesser known brands, it makes it hard to spend my money on these until they show they can reliably release drivers with a quick turnaround time.

There is a reason the Xbox doesn’t run Windows… even Microsoft knows there are issues with that OS on a game controller driven device. I don’t know why other companies can’t see it as well.

Putting higher resolution screens in these handhelds if proof that consumers don't know what features are actually important. It is also a great example of how marketing having precedence over engineering is stupid. "If we put a bigger number on the box it will sell more! Who cares if it only has 80% of the battery life and only hits 41fps instead of 60fps?" 1280x800 is a BETTER resolution for these devices than 1920x1200. It is not a side-grade. It is measurably better. How did we suddenly find it okay to go back to GameGear/Nomad battery-lifes? Because we are chasing big numbers instead of making things play 'better'.

7500 mhz is only for LPDDR5X and not LPDDR5

The SteamOS is number 1 IMO... sure its a PITA to load launchers outside of Steam OS and you can't play COD... so it's not perfect but its the future and Windows should take note... As much as I am desperate for more power than the Steam Deck can give I think the market needs to settle out and AMD need to get their shit together before I part with big bucks for a cutting edge device.

Windows UI isn't designed at all. They just throw new UI elements in every year and don't care at all about consistency or overall user experience.

😂😂😂 windows compatible with gaming. If you are going to be doing retro gaming on one of these the compatibility on ProtonGE is probably better than hunting down various wrappers and fixed EXEs would be on a handheld. For anti cheat and game store launchers like Epic or EA sure, but for older titles I'm not entirely sure about windows being more compatible.

Every Windows complaint you have can easily be solved with steam big picture. Steam big picture is literally the OS layout of the steam deck now
